I'll raise this dead thread,

This is my 458 socom build, 16" with Noveske chainsaw upper, lower, and NSR rail.

I should have my stamp back any day now, this is getting cut down to 10.5", and I have a Wilson combat muzzle brake to add.

Best looking .458 I've seen yet. Did you get the barrel/bolt from Wilson? How long was the backorder?

Thanks,

I'm not sure what brand the barrel is, I bought it used, I'm pretty sure it's not a Wilson.

I think this was discussed somewhere in another thread where someone was complaining about the lack of availability of short barrels.  Marty had commented that one may look at a RRA mid-length and have it cut down and then re-drill the gas port in the pistol length position.  He had stated he was going to talk to some people about possibly giving them the correct specs of gas port size and location in order to accomodate this need, as it seems SBR is so busy they can't keep up with the demand.  Has anyone heard any more on this?

[Last Edit: Big-Bore] [#8]
Things are about to loosen up greatly.  The SOCOM is slated for SAAMI adoption then the specs will be open sourced then everyone will be using the correct speced reamers instead of those reverse engineered reamers made by PTG (Wilson, Black Hole Weaponry, or anyone other than TJ, RR, SBR, SSK, and TROMIX).

I don't know for sure what the end game is, but TROMIX has started making .458 SOCOM extractors, muzzle brakes, and .875 LP gas blocks and has said, more to come, so it sounds like he is getting back into the AR game.  Keep an eye on him for more .458 SOCOM parts since HE is the MAN who took Marty's .458 SOCOM cartridge and made it work in the AR platform in a joint venture with Teppo Jutsu.  He knows more about building ARs in .458 SOCOM than anyone else.

Gas port, there is nothing special about the location.  Handgun, CAR, or midlength, they are all the same position as for the AR-15 in 5.56.
Size is no secret either since there are thousands and thousands of .458 SOCOMs out there.  All anyone has to do is pull the gas block and measure if they are serious about building .458 SOCOMs.  They run on the large side though, I can tell you that but I have not measured mine and I'm not pulling my GBs without a damned good reason, and that is not just because someone else is too lazy to write a few emails to SBR or RR or TJ or SSK or TROMIX.

Great news.  I've wanted to build a SOCOM for some time, but figured I'd wait till parts were back on the shelves.  I didn't feel like waiting months on a back order taht might ship.

Thanks for the update.  I'll need to contact Tromix then to see what he has in stock, and what is in the pipeline.  Thanks.

Did SBR dimple that barrel, and what was your wait time like to receive it?

Edit;  Found one of my answers in your post on another board... Marvin Pitts did the dimpling.  I shall contact him soon!

I got my barrel and bcg second hand unfired from a buddy, so I don't know what their realistic wait time is right now.  I know it's next to impossible to get in touch with SBR right now, because of how busy they are.

Thanks.  To be honest I was going for the beauty effect on this gun for sure, and went full bore on the project to make it a unique KAC gun.  I always wanted to do a dimple job on a medium profile barrel to give it the KAC glow, so this project was perfect for it.  Marvin is the only one doing their dimple pattern, so he was the obvious choice over ADCO.

I have been watching this build on Facebook as well. I mentioned Keymod, but I respect the non-Knights rail. You have convinced me to dimple my 16" 458 (and my La Rue Costas).

Ok.  Received the last parts this afternoon.  I have a fully functioning 10.5" 458 SOCOM pistol.

Fired one round just to check function.  Went BANG and ejected case so it is working fine so far.  Won't be able to do any major testing till Fri.  Too much W##$.  That awful four letter word.

Recoil was not nearly as bad as I predicted once again..  Don't know if the brake has that much to do with it but it is much lighter recoil than the 16" carbine.  It is much lighter weight as well.  Can't wait to hit the range for a few hours.

Took me almost a month to get registered.  Did not have the right ADDY.  Once I had a good address it took a few days.  Also Marty was doing it then and he was out of town and not by the puter.  It is worth the wait.  SO much good info you can access even if not a member.

That is one mean looking rifle. 2 things stand out to me. First, you built from 80% which is the only way I will be going moving forward from my last rifle procurement, which was also an 80% based rifle. The second thing to stand out is that you are in occupied territory just like me here in kalifornistan. It is very nice to see the American spirit alive and well behind enemy lines on the northern front.

Any one of the three TonyM lists in the top thread.  If you don't hear back within a few days, check YOUR spam folder and email him again.  Do follow the directions he gives you though because if you don't bother to do what he asks you to do, which is minimal, why should he bother?

Will .458s work in the relatively new 50 round XS drum mags?

Don't know about the new one but they do not work with the beta mags so I have been told.

Don't think so, the X-15 only feeds from one side, so the 458 would not be able to pass through the feed tower.... your best bet is the MWG snail drum, 90 x 223 or 32 x 458.....

Pretty sure you don't have to mod the kx3 for it to work with the 458 . But others will chime In .

You don't if you want to blow the end out of it. The hole in the KX3 will not pass a .458 bullet.  You have to drill out the cone completely, at least the parallel part, and part of the cone too, or have a special cone made.  Or you can leave the cone out altogether.  But just taking a .308 KX3 and putting it on a .458 is a sure fire way to make things interesting in a hurry.

Got my MWG drum and Lancers ready. As soon as some parts come back from being NP3'd I can test these bad boys out.

The wait is killing me.........

Fantastic.  Do a video of shooting the 458 suppressed?  Such videos are rare.

For those 458 owners living in states that infringe mags to 10 rounds, which will be the first mag manufacturer to offer 10 round 458 stamped magazines for sale / direct shipment?

Only thing I have seen to date is third parties selling 458 engraved floor plates indicating 10 rounds, etc.

Separately, my starline order arrived today!

Got mine together last night for initial load development. Once the stamp comes in for its permanent lower itll wear a PRS stock as well to help balance out the can and a 1-4 scope instead of the 3-15. Its a black hole weaponry 9.5" stainless bull barrel with dimples and a fortis 9" rail. With any luck I'll sneak out of work early tomorrow and get some rounds downrange.
