If you're running a 20" mid-length system it should be a little easier to tune with the faster powders....going from 125 to 140gr with powders that speed is a really big change in pressure profile....may just want to work with the lighter initially, usually if you get it to run the lighter - the heavier is a breeze......I wouldn't worry too much with getting it to cycle until you run a full load ladder (preferably with the gas off) to find your operating charge/velocity....then work on porting or recoil components for the desired cycle....I usually turn the gas off by using an adjustable block or just flipping a gas block around backwards to block/cover the port.....I know you asked about the rifle-length but thought I remembered you saying at one time having a mid-length 20", so should be a little more straight forward to tune....

Just saw your mid-length post....it's all good....

Wilson sells the Barnes 110 gr TTSX (SKU# 30801)

shopwilsoncombat.com/Bullet-762x40WT-110-gr-Barnes-Tipped-TSX-50_Box/productinfo/NW274/

On Barnes web site they sell the Barnes 110 gr TTSX (SKU# 30871)

barnesbullets.myshopify.com/collections/tipped-tsxtm-bullet/products/30-cal-308-110-gr-ttsx-fb

Does anyone know it these are the same bullet with a different stock number?

If different is the 30871 also suitable for the 7.62x40?

they are different. both will work but the one wilson sells will expand at lower velocities that the x40 runs.

This also looks like the same bullet with a different stock# 30851

The 30811 is the 300 Blackout/Whisper that is too long for the x40

Somewhere in this thread is a comparison I did of the 110gr TSX and the 110gr Tac-TX SBR being shot into water jugs from a 7.62x40.  The Tac-TX SBR, like the Wilson 110gr TTSX, is designed to open at lower velocities than the regular TSX.  It was obvious that the one designed for lower velocities opened up farther, for what it is worth.  There should be pics in my old post, I'll see if I can dig them up.

I've been doing some testing on .224" bullets using water jugs and have learned some important information so I decided to try a couple from my 7.62x40.  I've had the 110gr TSX and the 110gr TSX-SBR for a while and wanted to see what they would do.  Barnes told me that the upper velocity limit on the SBR version (which was designed with the 300BLK in mind) was around 2300fps.  I get 2500fps from these bullets in my 16" 7.62x40 so I figured I would just hold on to them for use in my 300BLK or my 7.62x40 SBR (when I get it), but I decided to test it from the 16" today just for fun.

Here's what I found.  Both bullets had an impact velocity of approximately 2470fps (10 yards from the muzzle).  The standard 110gr TSX mushroomed perfectly, as I've come to expect from the TSX line of bullets, and completely penetrated 4 jugs of water, coming to rest in the 5th.  It had 100% weight retention and expanded to 0.641".

Next up was the 110gr TSX-SBR.  After having quite a few of the .224" TSX's lose their petals if driven to velocities above what Barnes recommends, I expected the SBR bullet to do the same at this impact velocity, however, it did not.  It also exhibited a perfect mushroom, but it expanded further down the shank of the bullet.  It penetrated 3 jugs completely, and stopped in the 4th, which suggests it opened earlier and lost more energy but had a shorter neck length than the standard TSX.  It retained 100% of its weight and expanded to 0.656".

Also of note was that the standard bullet penetrated similarly to a 62gr TSX from a 5.56 rifle and the SBR bullet penetrated similarly to a 62gr Bonded Federal .223 round so penetration should be about right for hunting and defense.  I know milk jugs are not hogs or humans, but the bullets both held up well (surprising so for the SBR bullet), and penetrated well.

Since the SBR bullet held together so well, I'm thinking it may be about perfect for the 7.62x40 as it would increase the effective range considerably.   The standard TSX is supposed to expand to 1800fps (220 yards with a MV of 2500) and the SBR bullet is supposed to expand down to 1500fps (330 yards with a MV of 2500).  These may be worth looking at.

Just for comparison I also shot a 110gr V-Max into jugs.  It completely penetrated 2 jugs leaving fragments in the first two and the jacket and core stopped in jug 3.  It only retained 38.3gr (34.8%) and the core expanded to 0.579".

Here are some pics:

That is the post I was referencing.  The two bullets are dimentionally identical and the only way to tell them apart is the TAC-X SBR has an "X" stamped on the base of the bullet.  Given what I found I expect them to be almost ideal for the 7.62x40.  If the Wilson 110gr TTSX is built the same I would expect similar results.

Thanks for the info and links to the pics.....

At the distance we usually hunt (100 to 150yds over feeders or open spots in the brush) the impact velocity out of my 20" should be around 2,200fps....at that distance and velocity the TSX has worked really well for us....the expansion varies a little between a double lung or high shoulder shot, but the more solid hits we recovered are pretty close to the one in your picture at 2,400fps....

I have a friend that is a little......frugal?........and believes the cheapest bullet is the best bullet.....he usually uses 125 Noslers....they bust all up, fragment all to hell, rarely exit.....but they kill.....

The other bullet that you tested that I've been really impressed with is the 110 V-MAX.....on the West Texas sized deer we get, if you keep the impact velocity around 2,100 to 2,200fps these things act like a high dollar controlled expansion game bullet.....the first deer I shot with one I was really hesitant, had a standby rifle propped up next to me just in case......after I saw how they performed, I don't even think about it anymore.....they make the prettiest perfect mushrooms about a half inch around, hold together good, and penetrate with exit wounds you could shove a plum in....but again, going into it knowing the range we're gonna be shooting at helps loading the velocity up or down to the desired impact velocity.....

A shooter from NY recently contacted me about wanting a 22" light contour 'hunter'.....so here's the beginning stages....0.700" under handguard and 0.600" in front of gas block.....comes in under 2 lbs, didn't think that was too bad for a 22.....

Will be starting on a Rem 700 7.62x40mm for him after this one....

Just finished the 22" rifle length gas system upper from a few posts up.....it's a pencil profile barrel coated in black poly....

Even with the 9x scope it was turning in groups right at an inch with 125 TNTs just shy of 2,700fps....

Will be used primarily as a 'hunter' with the 110 TSX clocking about the same as the TNTs....

MADK0W64,
I was just about to get on and brag about the seven pt. I took this morning, and then saw your 10!
Congratulations!

This is my third year for this rifle and now it is my standard go to caliber for whitetails and hogs.  After 8 hogs and 3 deer, this was the first one to take a step after being hit.  It went a good 20 yards before going down.

A while back I inquired at Wilson about trying to get a reamer for the 7.62x40 so I could have a custom Encore or Contender barrel made up. I dont' remember the reamer maker who I was referred to at that time but they said it was proprietary and that they couldn't sell me a reamer. Has that changed and is it possible to get a reamer and if so from who ? I'd like it to be a tighter chamber than is probably used in an AR and with the longer throat like the bolt gun above. Thanks for any info anyone can give.

Wilson told me to contact Pacific tool and guide about 6 months ago, PT&G has no issues creating the reamer.

These bullets are a bit long for the x40 like you say.  I bought a box not knowing this.  Loaded a few up and the biggest problem is that you have to crimp them about 2mm onto the ogive.  While this looks funny, and not somthing you would normally do, I had to test them to see if it was going to be a problem, which I didn't figure it would be, and it wasn't.  Interestingly enough, I shot the best group I have ever shot out of my gun.  A 5 shot group into .992" with the first shot being the farthest out.  The other 4 shots all touched and went into a .422" group  Velocity was 2417fps average using 1680.

The bullets that Wilson sells have been out of stock for sometime, and when I called them last, they had no idea when they were going to get them back in stock.

The bullet you want is the Barnes 110gr Tac-X SBR bullet part# 30834, it is intended for the reduced velocities seen from SBR applications from 308Win, 30RAR and 762x40, they don't shoot worth a damn out of a 300blk(at .050" off the lands the bullet is fully out of the neck).

Sorry, if I knew a source I would have one myself.  At least an 18" one.  I've been playing with my 16" gun at 500 yards and would really enjoy seeing what a longer barrel would do.

I've been happy with the 110gr TAC-X SBR. If you look back through the thread I show the expansion difference at 16" 7.62x40 velocity when fired into water.

I've loaded and shot them but haven't hunted with them yet. They are a little shorter than 125gr Nosler BTs and shoot just as good. Worked up to 21gr of W296/H110 in fire formed LC cases.

2.250"  The cannelure is in the neck at that length but there's still full diameter of the bullet past the case mouth. The SSTs load and shoot really well in 7.62x40

Well, after much deliberation back and forth on this cartridge vs .300 blk I ended up ordering a barrel, dies, and some brass from wilson.

I'm going to build up a lightweight hunting rifle as I can spare money for parts.  It'll probably be next year before I can load up any ammo but I went ahead and jumped on a barrel since they had them in stock.

Thanks.  My biggest hang up was having no option for factory ammo.  As long as I plan ahead this shouldn't be an issue.  Worst case scenario if I don't have any ammo made I'll just hunt with my .308 or my .30-30.

I would think that making the brass shouldn't be too bad. If you have the dies and a barrel you have all you need besides a spare afternoon. Ruining a few 223 cases won't break the bank.

Good luck to you.  Mine gets daily use around my property, and as with you, it will be the first on the list for hunting season.  So far it has taken everything it could around here from deer to beavers.  I even have a bear, rabid dog, a couple of coyotes and a few hogs thrown in between.

Long time no talk.  After building my WT almost 3 years ago it drew first blood today.  I was hunting the morning in western NY when 6 doe came through.  They were in some pretty thick cover and I had only one shooting lane possibility.  I decided to shoot the first one that went into the lane.  I watched them for about 30 minutes then I thought they were going to head away from me then the just turned around and headed back my way.  One stepped into the lane and I shot.  She piled up 20-30 yds from where I shot her.  I am very impressed with this round.  I was shooting Wilsons factory 110gr Sierra HP and it did wayyyyy too much damage.  The bullet fragmented and took out allot of the shoulder meat and ripped the stomach open sending stomach contents all through the left front leg.  The heart looked like it was smashed with a hammer.  I will keep this as a nice coyote round as there was no exit but I need to do something else for deer.  Here is a video I put together.  You can barely see the deer but they are there if you look close haha.

The X40mm is a great wildcat, I would of gone with the 125 gr. Nosler BT but the 110 gainer is fine for the task at hand at reasonable distances...

Good luck with it and thanks for sharing the video...There are plenty of good quality deer in that area of NYS...

Nice video!  Thanks for sharing. I've been enjoying my 7.62x40 for about three years now. Maybe one of these years I'll get mine into the woods.
