Dropped this AR180B off at the gunsmith to get an ambi selector put on.  Saw a site in Canada where one was done. (won't take a regular aftermarket one), printed off the pics and my gunsmith says he can do it.  I think I'll shoot it more if it is more lefty friendly.  It is a fun gun to shoot.

This tread really needs some love, so I'll post pics when I get it back.

The new look.  As said above, had ambi put on and an A2 birdcage.  Had an original crank handle put on a couple years ago.  It's a much more lefty-friendly rifle.  It's currently got a trijicon aimpoint in an ADM Recon mount on it:

ETA: I'm going to remove the ace side folder and go with a stormwerkz set up for a sidefolding buffer tube and a magpul CTR.  I think Bravoman and hepcat's were that way in earlier pics in this thread, and I think it's a better set up utility wise.

Very nice.  I wish someone would make a conversion kit or something so that the old 180 lowers could take regular mags.  I would love to have one and put a "modern" 180b upper on it, because as i recall, the originals were 1:12 twist.

Also, pics of 180's, two in the last couple of weeks.  Setting a record for recent history of this thread.  Let's get this thread going again!

dug the old gal out of the back of the safe recently, and got in some range time.  Still a great shooter.  I do need to upgrade the rail, and buy a better sight than the old Bushnell red dot.

Amazing that Armalite hasn't come to it's senses and reworked and released 180B. What's wrong with an inexpensive design that works? Oh yeah, it's inexpensive and it works.

My daughter and I fixed that problem :)

Fun Shoot

It should be going under the knife soon as a pistol/sbr built on a new NDS-18S lower.

What are you going to do when they come out with the NDS-18S upper that takes AR barrels and has a flat-top rail?

Unfired until last week.
The front sight was way off, dialed it in with bore sight.
Can't wait to get back to the range.
Searching for an original scope mount.
I'll keep mine as stock as possible.
I'll probably get a Nodak billet to keep the polymer lower in new condition.

I have a request from you owners of AR180B's, I am trying to put together a database of the small variations that happened during it's production run.

As I see it the first version had a nut at the base of the barrel that tightened to the trunion to set head space.

The second, and most common variant, has the barrel screwed directly into the trunion and has an integral muzzle break.

The final version had a screw on flash-hider.

If you would like to contribute your serial number and it's features to the database please email me at rkelley91 at gmail dot com

Bought this "new" in box yesterday. It was a major impulse buy and I am still trying to figure out if it was a good idea or not.

The idea was that I wanted to make it into a BumpSAW for my thread and make it a mishmash of M249 and AR-180 parts. The more I look at the lower, the less I think it's possible.

Finally got around to putting the NDS18 lower together.

Had to use the trigger and hammer pins from the AR180B lower because the Anderson LPK pins I had were too short.

I could use your help.

I am hoping to lock down a timeline of the changes that were made to the 180B.

Details are in my latest article.

http://ar180s.com/early-late-armalite-ar180b/

Basically changes to the lower, barrel and when the factory threaded the barrel.
If I can start to put these feature in a spread sheet with the serial numbers, it would tell us a lot.

Let's fire this 180 thread up.

My first AR180 was a Sterling that I got in about 1982, and used as a LEO trunk weapon until I stupidly traded it for a "real" AR-15! I bought my second Sterling made Armalite 180 when I was living in Mississippi IN 2009-2010, and sold that when I knew I was moving back to California in 2012. At the same time, a good friend offered me an original, low serial number Costa Mesa manufactured AR180 for a price I could not say no to  (99+% finish, two original AR18 20 round magazines, and two steel AR18/AR15 30 rounders, all 99+% finish).

This was just as I was leaving Mississippi, so I bought it, and the Costa Mesa AR180 went to my buddy's in Elko, NV on the way back to CA. (since Armalite AR180s were banned by name here in 1990). I really haven't shot it more than a couple times in the last five years. Here are some some pictures of my Costa Mesa AR-180, taken in Elko, before the divorce of upper and lower!

For a long time, I was content to leave it in Elko, and just shoot it when I went to the desert. I wanted to leave it original.  As I approach 65, though, I realized I wanted to enjoy it my AR180 without being a Californication felon, or having to go to Nevada to shoot it.

I am taking the upper half of the Costa Mesa mfg. AR180 and and mating it to a NDS18S forged lower (which is legal in California as long as fixed magazine or featureless). I am finishing it out as a California legal, featureless, NDS18S. Top half will be Costa Mesa - the original piston drive 5.56 - and the bottom half will have an AR180B fixed stock on the NDS18S lower. Yes, the upper will have more wear than the lower, but I'm too damn old to care about that. I am going to have fun with this gun before I get too old to enjoy it!

Here's everything except the stripped NDS lower (which I get out of the LGS on the 10th.). AR180B LPK completion set and butt stock from Big Rix, and the stock adapters from Stormwerkz. I already had a standard AR LPK and the assorted grips for the non-180B stuff for the lower. To be featureless to comply with the communist edicts of Californication, I got a CAV brake to replace the three prong, the AR180B stock is fixed, and I will use either a MMG or an A@ grip with a Monkieboi grip wrap (depending on which feels best).  Nice thing about the CAV brake, it is the same dimension as an A1 or A2 bird cag, and my M7 or M9 bayonets still fit.

Here are some pictures of the lower, which is in jail until 6-10-17.  The nice thing is that it uses standard AR15 magazines - (of which I have plenty), instead of the slotted AR18/180 mags - (of which I only have four!).  Also uses standard AR FCG and mag catch - with longer hammer and trigger pins.

More porn for you all.  I have a B-square adapter, a riser rail and a cheapo tapco illuminated scope mounted on this for the time being.

Grr and double grr on getting the image to display inline.

With the crazy AR-15 sales going on I could almost buy a whole ar for the price of that new lower (which looks really, really nice).
I'm still not a fan of cleaning the chamber on a DI gun...

The rig got too heavy, so I replaced the MI rail with the original hand guards but now with grippy tape on to(the wife loves that).  I also put on a magpul adjustable stock, but cut the back of the buffer tube(the 180 does not have a buffer) and now houses the cleaning kit and spares.  The weight went from above 11lb to below 9lb.  It also sports a Palmetto EPT trigger and a regular A2 flash suppressor.  The Aimpoint H1 red dot is at the factory to fix the brightness knob and now the 180b has a Weaver K2.5 scope on it.
