Which of the mentioned rails don't need to have specific alignment with the gas tube? The only one I know for sure is the Midwest Industries one. Any others?

I'm assuming a full length Picatinny rail at the top and including the barrel nut/hardware (ie the DD rail is 8oz, but with nut+hardware its 10.2 oz) and between 11-13 inches.

Lightest will be the 2A Balios lite Gen1 then; SLR Helix / 2A Balios lite Gen2 / V7 Enlightened (11.1in) / Battle Arms Rigidrail / Midwest G3M / YHM SLM / Noveseke NSR. With the above criteria these are the only ones I see that are below 10oz. I'm positive they are some that I'm missing though. (The DD MFR XS / CMT Tact Mod2 are close at 10.2 oz for both, and the Odin Works is 10.34oz)

The F1 Firearms S7M is supposed to be light also, but they decided not to post any weights.

I would suggest looking at the barrel nut to rail connection as a higher consideration though as often you sacrifice weight for strength. (The 2A rails are only connected by 4 screws pressing against the barrel nut for example.)

As far as I can tell the Faxon streamline Carbon is the lightest Mlok currently if you dont care about the top picatinny.

I mentioned it on page 1, the Fortis REV II 12 MLOK is 8.1 oz, and the grip is damn near perfect (1.340), I do believe that skinny is relative to what feels comfortable.

I didn't have problems until I did

It could just use a mechanical solution to fore and after movement other than friction.  At its price point it's hard to recommend vs alg/g/centurion/slr etc

Yep.  It's dumb.  I like MI so I hate to talk bad but they need a mechanical solution. It would be easy to do.

I love MI for the light weight and easy installation.  I hear you can go by and find blems at great prices.

I love ALG for the price and weight.  Slightly more difficult to install, but the cost to quality is fantastic.

Like you, I’m jumping on the Grendel bandwagon, so I got both.

My 18” AA is wearing a 15” MI and my 16” BCA is wearing a 12” ALG V3.

On the M.I. gen-3  does the new torque plate prevent the rail from sliding off forward ?

or do you still have to glue the rail to the barrel nut ?

...if you have to glue it,  what happens when you want to remove it ? ( to change barrels or something ? )

I found a response from Troy @ MI regarding these questions:

"The torque plate serves multiple functions (it is made from 4140 steel)
1 when tightening the hand guard on to the barrel nut it limits the amount the hand guard can be compressed to the nut .
2 the torque plate engages the upper to keep the handguard from rotating .
3 the torque plate hooks to the back of the barrel nut keeping the hand guard from sliding off the front of the nut.
4 the torque plate also helps align the hand guard during installation . There is no longer a need to time out the barrel nut.
Hope this answers your question.

As for the adhesive:

"We recommend using it as it makes for a very bullet proof installation. We include it with the hand guard. We have tested with out using it and had no issues but since most everyone does not remove their hand guards once they are installed .We say use it.

Only the Gen 3 MI rails have the non indexing barrel nut that only needs 60 ft/lbs torque per instructions -- I prefer that to keep install simple and reduce any fatigue on the upper during install and disassembly  like reaching or slightly exceeding 80 ft/lbs does.

1) the antirotation plate does reach behind the barrel nut tightly -- the rail is not just  going to slide off.
2) the barrel nut does require the green adhesive like other MI rail products. Just tighten the screws towards the muzzle first to torque and then proceed to the rear one. I wedge a plastic tool between the tabs, or "ears", that hold the retaining screws at bottom dead center of rail closest to the barrel nut to help with positioning on the barrel nut just prior.
3) remove screws and wedge that plastic tool between the "ears" of the rail that hold the screws. It will loosen the adhesive immediately.

Not the lightest, but reasonably priced at $150 and it doesnt squeeze the barrel nut like several other designs. It also has four anti-rotation points. There is no way this rail is going to move. The rail is trapped by the wedges that interface with thr barrel nut. It's movement for and aft is not possible and the anti rotation features will keep it in place side to side.

13.6 oz for the 15 inch Atlas S-One so theres some additional data for you.
