im not looking to spend a crazy amount but would like something of quailty.

im looking for something very simple looking.

so far iv been reading reviews on the rem 700 and savage police model (something along those lines).

Get a Tikka of your choice.

Here is my T3 lite in 308 (6.5lb 22" barreled rifle) after its first full box of ammo.
Factory FGMM 168 @100 yards.

Screwed one of the shots on this group, but you get the idea.

for hunting, stay light.  you can shoot it at the range too.

but when you say 'range' and 'police' I wonder what you have in mind.  if it is something that shoots nice small groups all day long then that will be a heavier barrel at least.  IMHO, too heavy for hunting.

so get two!

hard to beat savage for value.  I have a model 11 in 308 that I shortened a bit and I could not be more satisfied.  I have a burris FFII scope on it.  great value in a scope.  get a police-type rifle later.

I have a 110 in 30/06 with wood stock, pre accutrigger that is light and accurate. With the Pachmayer pad it's almost pleasant to shoot.

Just buy a used SA Savage, rebarrel it and it's off to the races. The boltface can be replaced

And the savage is an inexpensive breeze to rebarrel and headspace, too.

With a 308, you could rebarrel easily from 22-250, 243, 260, 7mm-08, 308, 338, to 358 win if you want.

Tikka. Hammer forged barrels, excellent triggers, incredible value. Lots of different models, too.
