I guess I have been caught up in the extractor upgrade craze despite the fact that my bcg is functioning just fine.  I have been looking at different "upgrade" parts and came across this "D" shaped "O" ring.

Ok...why would I put a D around a round spring?

If you're not having any issues, yes, why would you do anything?

Because it separates you and your money.

The ‘D-ring’ came out before HD extractor springs were prevalent.
They or the o-rings are not normally needed when using a HD spring.

I have seen the colt spring...looks to be copper.  I also have looked at the Wolff spring.

Any opinions on either?

I don’t use either, but given that choice I would go Colt.

Why is that?  Wolff is known for their weapons springs....well at least for handgun recoil and firing pin springs.

I don’t doubt the Wolf springs are good, but I have heard good things about the Colt springs and nothing about the Wolf springs.
Personally I use the BCM springs without the o-ring.

Why without the o-ring?  Wouldn't the extractor not fit correctly without it?

The o-ring was Crane’s fix for extractors slipping off cases at high cyclic rates like are seen in the SMG variants.
If you have a 12” or shorter barrel you might need an o-ring.
If your weapon is overgassed and you are having extraction problems an o-ring might work for you.
The o-ring has nothing to do with the fit of the extractor spring.

The D ring was a COT's item, while the "Crane" O ring was designed and tested in house.  Its not just any old McMaster Carr O ring that happens to fit.

The were considered equals, and there was no separate part number.  When the upgrade kits were made to send out to the field, whatever was on top in the bin, be it an o ring or the d ring is what was put in the bag and shipped

These o rings and d rings are just bandaid items for a proper spring...which the Colt gold spring is.
