Like in 6mmTCU or 243Win?

Yes 6mmTCU. Or any of the other .223 based wildcats. (if they fit the mag length)

No 243Win. It be waaay too long.

DOH! Complete brainfart! I need to back off on the coffee.

Are you wanting to use your BBL and go to a different chambering?
If so, no you can't.
Do you want a 6mm wildcat (.243)?
If so you need a custom BBL. 6mm-223 is a common chambering that has been used in AR's for years.

Oly mfg's 6x45 BBL's (6mm-223)

AR10 only

Olyarms has developed an upper for an ar15 that fires .243WSSM though.

Who can  get to do the rechambering?

Well, you never really said what you are doing...  Did you want this to work from an AR-15 mag and if so it will not work as a 22/243 in a 223 mag.  BUT, I wounder if it might work as a single shot?

Also, do you need a full length 22/243 (22 Souper)?  If not, you might be able to make a shorter version that would work in the mag as you are dealing with a custom job anyways...

As for rechambering, any gunsmith can do that but getting it to run may be a challange until you work out the gas pressure issues...

Wildcat 6mm rounds based on the 223 case will would work but anything based on a 308 won't, they  are longer and the boltface is larger.

There are a couple of things that make this impossible.

First, you cannot re-chamber a .223 barrel to a .243 as the bore diameter of the barrel would still be .224".

Second, if by .243 you mean the .243 Winchester, the bolt face in a AR15 is not large enough to support the increased sized head. Even if you opened the bolt face up, there would not be enough "meat" surrounding the case head for it to be safe.

To be able to do this economically and SAFELY, you need to have a AR10 and then you would re-barrel it, not re-chamber it.

I think some of the generalizations here are too general...  anything is possible and I still don't know the intended scope of this project...

Yes, the standard AR-15 bolt will not work BUT that doesn't mean it is impossible to work something out that will work...

As suggested in this thread, I would look at the 243WSSM and from there if you want this to be a 223 bore, simply start with Olympic Arms's 243 WSSM and get a new barrel in a 22/243WSSM for some wild "22-250 or better performance out of your AR-15.  Given you are talking about "Rechambering" I am assuming you want this in 223 bore...

If I don't understand what you want, can you clairify...?

I can't wait for the Olympic .243 WSSM to come out. It is exactly what I have been wanting in an AR for quite a while.

OK, from what I understand via e-mail this is the goal...

I want to go from a 223 to a cal that  can hunt with in Tn,. 223 is not legal. I picked up a extra Varmiter upper without the bolt or bolt carrier but I dont need 2. So I would like to put this on my personal Varmiter and use my bolt and bolt carrier if this is poss. I guess I want to rebarrel the 223 to a 6mm or 7mm I shoot alot of 7mm TCU in my Encore. Would this be about the same?

With what was e-mailed it will be much easier for you to do this in other ways.  Personally, I would give up on the 243 option and either go with the AR-10 or look at the AR-15 in either 7.62x39 or 300 Whisper (http://www.quarterbore.com/300whipser)

The 300 Whisper will be the easiest option as it uses AR-15 mags, bolt, and everything else and the 300 Whipser is a great hunting cartridge that will do a good job on deer.  The 300 Whisper will nearly equal the perfomance of the 30/30 or 7.62x39...

Good Lucn, but doing what you want to do with an AR-15 is going to cost you a whole lot of money and there are other cartrdges that will be easier to do the same thing with...

Good Luck!
