I still say they're classy as hell, and I've been on a serious #makequadrailsgreatagain campaign lately

I HATE that M203 cut-out.  I don't own an M203, will never own an M203, and the last thing I want is a chunk cut out of my barrel to accommodate something I neither want nor could have, even if I wanted it.

Other than that, I like M4s just fine.

@Gonzaar24, being Mil you should be able to get access to a SOCOM to handle? What branch are you?
Surely there are some around?

What rifles are they? Are they 14.5 or are they 14.5 with a pinned and welded flash hider

The top one is a M4 clone I built with a McKay Enterprises lower and a Colt 14.5" barrel. The second one down is a LE6920 (16" bbl). The third is a build I did with a CMMG 14.5" SOCOM barreled upper and a LMT Defender lower assembly. The fourth one is a Sabre Defence XR-15 with 14.5" barrel. The last one also has a CMMG 14.5" SOCOM barreled upper. All the 14.5" barrels have pinned and welded FHs.

Airforce.security forces.  Unfortunately we don't have the privilege of having access to the socom rifles. Maybe if I knew some PJs, or CCTs. I had a chance when I was stationed at Turkey one of the army spec ops dudes was hanging out at our range and wanted to show us some pointers. He even had his rifle too and i regret not handling it since he had out for us to see and hold.

Forgive me for trying to be specific but are all the 14.5 barrels pinned and welded to 16 inches or are they 14.5 overall. Can't tell the difference between the two lengths on pictures

Yeah shame on me i know. I believe it was a block 2 since there was no fixed front sight and the handguards were slightly longer than an m4 carbine. Our instructor was just showing us the differences between our rifles and their socom barreled rifles. He was pointing out the full auto feature on it versus the burst option on our rifles. It wasn't till I was a member of this page that I knew what he was talking about. Bad timing on my part because I would probably annoy the special ops dudes with a bunch of weapons questions. Btw they were very humble on teaching us some pointers when we were at the range. Very professional

So, what weapon are you/your unit issued?

I know very little about Mil and who is issued what in general?

It is different from branch to branch, and unit to unit, yes?

We get issued m4 carbines airforce wide if you're security forces which is the airforce equivalent of military police with m9s as well. Those are our main duty weapons. Depends on the mission. Now if you're spec ops you get the M4A1 which has the socom barrel and full auto. I believe army infantry has that or is transitioning to that rifle from the m4 carbine burst option. Idk about the navy and marines. I just know special ops from all branches get the M4A1. Someone can chime in and add more info

Now your issue M4, is it burst?I assume so?

Eta: reread your earlier post see it is burst.

Shows how little I know. I was under the understanding that all burst options were converted to full awhile ago.

I'm not necessarily all that worried about looks and I've been making a larger move lately (I used to be big into clones) towards what works for me, as opposed to how "cool" something is.

For me, that means longer/skinnier handguards that allow for more options in support hand placement along with lighter barrels + suppressor mounts and stuff like that.  I still carry an M4 for work (I'm AF SF as well), but I vastly prefer some of the more modern stuff.

Closest M4 setup I have, not a big fan of the RAS rails so decided to stick to the traditional handguards.

If you read Aaron Cohen's book, he said that the sole reason he went out for IDF SF was because they were issued the M4 and he thought it looked way cooler than the M16s.

Personally, I think midlength and rifle length gas systems with long handguards is the way to go.

I've never liked the way they look. With the fat hand guards it looks odd, although with the RIS/RAS it looks better. A 653 or 723 looks better than the M4 but they all have the pointless short hand guard.

What the M4 should have been IMO:

Low profile gas block under the rail, still able to mount an M203, no bayonet capability.

I'm assuming the weight comes from the quad rails. That's what everyone is saying about them and the reason they're going for keymod and mlok. I'm just not a fan of the long handguards. Good thing Midwest industries makes drop in mlok and keymod handguards

It's not just the rails, it's also the FSB and the typical M4 barrel profile.

Not a fan of the M203 barrel cut, but do love the balance of the government profile under the hand guards. I have 5 M4 clones, one kit I got today, one M4 upper I got today, and three with solid " medium " profile carbines. I prefer the M4.

I think they look cool and ended up making one a year or two ago, but I ended up selling it because they're outdated now. We have better technology that doesn't require a quad rail and fixed FSB anymore.

I'm not sure you could quantify "better" than a fixed FSB.   Most of the serious Carbine users I know are advocates of a FSB on a fighting gun.
