Hi Folks,

Just want to give a heads-up that we received one of the new Wolf piston uppers. Some of their staff reached out to our guys and asked if we could "run it hard" and let them know how it turns out. From my first impression, everything looks high quality and the bolt carrier looks solid and robust. We will get a new lower group to pair with the upper and start some paperwork to track round count before putting it on the line.

V/R
Ron

I want one chopped down to 12.5" for one of the stamped lowers.

Wonder if they will offer a SBR / pistol variant

Looks neat, not too expensive, either. Wondering if carrier tilt would be an issue without a buffer tube made for piston AR's.

Does it come with a carry handle sight?  I remember reading on the firearm blog that it would come with a carry handle.  Looks pretty awesome!

I was thinking it actually looked pretty cool. Utilitarian, not all fancy and trendy.
Does it need Moar burnt bronze?

OK, this upper came with no carry handle or rear sights. I don't know if it's supposed to commercially but we ran it as-is. That being said, we ran 15 mags of 25 rounds with no issues. The lower was an Anderson Arms lower that was modified into a Post Sample machine gun to test the upper and it ran with no issues. The only thing I can say at this point is that we ran that many mags (25 rounds per mag) back to back and without gloves... it did become a bit warm. The round on the bench was from me not seating the first magazine completely on the first go' round.

Also no sling point by the front sight.

Ok, I'm interested. I don't care for retrofit piston systems, but this could be cool if it survives.

Did you mean carrier? None of my piston rifles show carrier tilt with standard spike buffer tubes.  All use a carrier with skis though.

It's on the left side of the front sight base.

That is the take down plunger for the Piston.

Here is the military design.

If the staff like it you could be close.
If it equals less cleaning the staff should like it.

Curious as to why?
Because it is a proven design from 1976 and has had no issues for the most part.

No, I meant something like the PWS "enhanced" tube that has an extended lip with a slot cutout that fits overtop of the buffer retaining pin, so the back end of the BCG rides on that lip instead of catching on the bottom edge of the buffer tube. It's just an easier, cheaper way to alleviate carrier tilt than having Wolf modify the BCG design.

I'm buying one of these the instant they hit market. I've been keeping track of them since they were announced - they're legit Taiwanese military T91 uppers. They are shipped here unassembled with the CHF barrel blanks. The barrels and uppers are finished and assembled here in the states due to import restrictions.

For anyone who doesn't know, the basic design of these piston uppers has been around since the mid 70's and has been in constant production on various rifle designations since then. It started out as a rifle (T65) based on the AR-18 incorporating many elements of the AR-15. Since then it has gone through different iterations, becoming more and more compatible with AR-15 rifles, but always using the short-stroke piston operation. Taiwan also sells lots of T91 rifles to middle eastern countries like Jordan because they have proven to have excellent performance in dry, sandy environments.

And only $600 MSRP? I can't wait for these to be available.

Oh it's got issues alright. It's so god damn ugly you'd have to tie a steak to it to get even a dog to love it.

Ron, when you get a chance, could you or one of your guys measure the circumference of the handguard?

The uppers don't ship with the T91 FSB sling mounts, and I'm wondering if a BFG UWL could be tethered to the handguard for a front sling point.

Is the barrel lined?  Is it a nitride finish or chrome lined?  What about the BCG?  What's the barrel profile?  What's the steel?

So is this just another short stroke piston conversion "type" AR upper? What makes this one different than something like AA, or Osprey, or Syrac, etc?

Those are aftermarket add on piston sets.  This is designed from the ground up to be a piston rifle.  The Type 91 is the issue rifle of the Taiwanese military, and has been for years.  Think of it more as putting a SIG MCX upper on your <insert manufacturer> lower.  Still keep the AR controls, but you get an upper designed from the go to be piston.
