G'day all,

So I am building a new AR, and want to get a slightly shorter barrel with a pinned muzzle break.

The goal to have a rifle that will shoot 1-1.5 MOA and last a long while. Purely a range toy, going out to a max of 300 yards or so.

My thoughts so far have been that I need chrome lined or nitrided for durability. All the 14.5s I have seen so far have been closer to $300, and I would rather put that toward a better optic or more customizations. I know I can get a 16" that fits the bill, but I really want the slightly shorter length.

Any suggestions on decent performing barrel under $200? Or does that not exist anymore?
Cheers,
S

The 14.5 Gunner should serve you well.  $157 @ Optics. I got one stashed away while I built up the 18" with the same barrel profile.

BA Hanson 14.5" is $180 with a pinned gas block.  That'll fit your bill.

Or here's a Faxon Gunner for $180 with a pinned gas block.  This will also fit your bill.

I've got a Spike's 14.5", a BCM 14.5", and a Faxon 14.5". The Faxon was much cheaper than the others and performs just as well. I'd go with the LaRue for $225, though.

You can occasionally find that Voodoo (Adams Arms) nitride pinned 14.5 barrel on sale for about $150.  I bought two from Natchez Shooter's Supply.  This is a great shooting barrel, very accurate.  It's on one of my favorite AR's.  I think quite a few on this site have used this barrel.

Apples to apples, the LaRue is technically $245.

Still the best buy though.

Thank you for all the feedback - I am really liking Ballistic Advantage barrels!
This seems like an amazing deal, performance series barrel, with pinned lo pro gasblock for only $180:
http://www.tomstactical.com/ballistic-advantage-performance-series-14.5-inch-5.56-hanson-barrel

Now I have never heard of Tom's Tactical either - are they a reputable shop?

Now guys, I know LaRue is a very good barrel, but at $245 it's 20% over what I am budgeting for a barrel - and I have a set goal to build a decently accurate rifle with certain features under 1k, and it's very easy to add one small upgrade at a time and creep up to 2k, and wonder how did you not get a KAC for the money

So far the BA is a clear winner for me for both price and performance. Is Tom's Tactical a solid outfit?

Cheers!
S.

I've ordered from Tom's a few times with no issue so GTG in my book.  They typically beat Granite Ridge pricing on items they both stock.

Take a peak at Monmouth Reloading as well, may save you a bit depending on the item.  But I have to pay TX sales tax on Tom's FWIW.

I ordered a 14.5 and 16 Hanson barrel last night from Tom's. I have already used Tom's LPK and buffer tube assembly and was very impressed. I decided to give their exo coated NiB Bcg a try at $119.

Can someone explain to me why the Larue is better than the others? I've heard a lot of mixed reviews on these "cheap" stealth barrels. Seems like they're mum about current barrel steel. I know it was LW50 and then they switched to something else.

I've read about issues with excessive gas, undersized gas block journals, and less than stellar accuracy.

As stated, Toms Tactical is GTG or was for me on two orders.  Both orders were for barrels and it took them 3-5 days to ship.  I don't remember the exact time frame.  The BA barrels are a great option.  I have 8 of the BA barrels in different calibers and lengths.

Faxon 14.5 middy PENCIL profile at AIM $179 (including pinned low pro gas block) if your going to FF.
I don't do "Gov't profile" anymore, as I think that profile is ridiculous and pointless. I'm a pencil profile guy now. If you want a pencil profile with A2 FSB they are at PSA under the barrel section ($178?), nitride Freedom barrel (ETA: oops.. sorry, that one's a 16" middy).

I haven't seen any complains about accuracy, the 16" stealth I have shoots sub MOA and in MOA all they long competition larue barrels are at top.

I have 3 Larue barrels, 12in Stealth, 16in tar and 20in Stealth.  At $245 plus shipping, they are up there in price compared to a BA or Faxon that can be bought for $180ish shipped with a pinned gas block.  You still have to buy the GB for the Larue barrel.  I only bought the Larue barrels because I had to see what all the hoopla was about.  Not sure I would buy another Larue barrel over a BA or Faxon.  I don't think they are worth $80-$100 more than a BA or Faxon.  I had my 16in BA Wylde barreled rifle out at a buddies property this weekend.  I was using a Weaver extreme classic scope on 12x and was hitting12oz plastic soda bottles at 163 yards with ZQI ammo.  Not sure I need more accuracy than that from my AR.

Longevity and pinned muzzle devices don't really go hand in hand if you're actually going to shoot a lot, especially if you're shooting cheap ammo.

I really don't believe saving that bit of length is worth it.

I would love to hear how a pinned muzzle device has anything at all to do with longevity of the barrel.

Wilson Combat Paul Howe 14.5 mid, stainless, fluted, medium contour, 308-sized threaded muzzle to negate the thin area under the brake.

Just cool and maybe the range toy you're looking for?

If you plan to shoot bi-metal jacketed bullets (tula, wolf) then I'd go with chrome lined. Though I can't remember if those shoot out CL just as fast, accuracy-wise. I would doubt it though.

I shoot a lot, have gotten rid of most of my 16's and have all 14.5 or shorter.

1 specific BCM has almost 10,000 on it. I did remove the factory bcm pin and comp after a few thousand rounds and replaced it with an AAC flash hider.

Don't really see how that would affect longevity at all.

Thank you for all the feedback, BA won out for me on quality and price in the end. They seem like a very well performing barrel at a very reasonable price.
Lot's of feedback about their quality and customer service - and at $180 for a barrel with a pinned low profile GB that is backed by a good company with a sub-MOA promise is a great deal for a range toy.

Now to find a muzzle device to pin to this barrel...

Cheers!

Yup, this!

I'd take a Green Mountain over any Faxon, Ballistic Advantage, or LaRue when factoring both quality and price.

Green Mountain @ $168

If we're talking about just barrel makers.... Rock Island Armory (I think, by a Chris guy right?) makes or made the barrels for RRA. My older RRA has one and it's a good barrel. Chrome-moly. AKA nitride? AKA melonite? lol

Anyway, known to make great barrels. Never looked into buy one though.
