Ron, another thread inspired this question. It's an interesting issue.
Do you keep bolts or carrier groups paired with one rifle or do you switch them freely between rifles? To any extent you switch them, have you seen any negative effects from switching BCGs between rifles? Thanks again for all the valuable info here. |

View Quote They hold up quite well but we just recently rebuilt approximately 15 of them. The armorers determined that they needed new trunions so we did complete rebuilds on them to include new trunion, barrel, bolt group with some getting new gas tubes and triple rings. These had been pushed passed their limit and when finish being rebuilt, they had a new coat of molyresin applied and now function 100% again. Just for the record, we replace the extractor springs every 3-5 days on average. They usually get one or two "bends" back into the extractor springs before disposing of it. Other than those springs, the only other piece that needs replacing on a somewhat often basis is the bolt retainer. The weapon will continue to function properly until you disassemble it for cleaning and the rollers just fall out. V/R Ron |

View Quote We just swap the entire bolt carrier groups at this point. It's easier on the staff for maintenance records at this point. When a carrier goes bad, it's just usually a gas key that sheared off and instead of taking the time to extract the old machine screws, we just swap the whole group as well. We will strip the extractors, firing pins, gas rings, etc for spare parts before getting rid of them. V/R Ron |

Per your response above, do you have to replace the 91/93 variant springs as often as the MP5? I had read to keep a spare but not to worry much about the rifles but the MP5 had an issue. From your note above it looks like they all have an issue with them? |

This may have been mentioned already, if so, apologies, but do you have any m1014 shotguns? If so, how many rounds do you guestimate through them, how many do you have, and what's broke and how often? Birdshot, or slug and buck?

View Quote We have a Benelli factory SBR that has been on the line since day one OVER four years ago and it runs and runs and runs. Mossbergs and Remington pump-actions will get 3 and at MOST 4 weeks of use before they are hard-broke. It's been abused with 00 buck, birdshot and even higher velocity frangible but nothing has taken it out of action. If I ever had to have one shotgun for the rest of my life, it would be the Benelli M4. V/R Ron |

Wow, 3 weeks for a Mossy 500?

Just curious how that steel on aluminum wear is. |

when it comes to shotguns, benelli, browning, beretta.
Remington and Mossberg are great for hunting and putting 100 rounds a year through. The 1187 might be an exception. |

Can you show some pictures of the internal rail wear on the SCAR 17. Just wondering how the steel carrier is interacting on the aluminum receiver with high round count.
Thank you !! |

The biggest offenders are the Mossberg 500 and the Remington 870 (standard model I would guess). We had some old 70's or 80's police trade-in's that last quite a while and they finally all went down. We can get those up and running again but we need to punch the rivet on the left side of the receiver and replace a component. The Mossberg 590's do last much longer than the other two standard models they eventually break as well. We have a bunch of shotguns that we still have to demil. It's cheaper just to buy a new one than spend the money and TIME on replacement parts and all the "tuning" to make the replacement parts work properly. If it was up to me, I would only use the Benelli M4's but customers want to see and experience the "pumping" action of a shotgun. They've seen and heard it their entire lives on movies and television so most customers tend to choose the pump-actions. We let customers know that the Benelli (we've only had one) it much lighter on recoil so it does get used quite a bit as well. V/R Ron |

As a Mossberg 500 owner, I'd like to know what parts fail, and after how many rounds? What sorts of ammunition do your customers favor in these shotguns?

This is an absolutely great thread. Real world empirical data tells the truth.
I've been gone from ar15.com for a couple years. Before that, I was funds limited and took a lot of time to determine that probably the best deal for me was the PSA CHF barreled ar15 (one carbine, one rifle). This thread confirms that for the financially challenged, I probably made the best decision I could have made. Of all of the new stuff I learned from this thread, the #1 thing is that a spare bolt or two might be in order. I'd probably never need it, but it would be the most likely failure (assuming that the rifle is taken care of). I am back here after all of this time because I had a spare bcg, and decided to build another inexpensive rifle. The upper I chose was a PSA nitride middy. It looks like that was a good decision, too! I love them, but sometimes question myself when all you hear here is "DD/Noveske", putting down all other ARs. I am pretty sure that these guns will outlive me and most any other cheap AR on the market. now, on to the optic (need a new one) and AK ( I built three back in the day from flats, heat treated, had professionally cerakoted. ) topics. |

It would seem crazy that a factory machinegun thats been manufactured for this long and costs the .gov $4k would have a higher price than buying the civy model. |
