M4A1 or CQBR?
I'd say "Block 1" (more specifically 1.5) for the M4 and "Block II" for the 10.3" gun. The "Block II" M4A1 is too fucking heavy for what it does. It's less of an "issue" with the shorter upper. |

Block 2 without question. Does everything the block 1 does just better imho. Also looks better to me, if that's important to you. And I also think the weight is really a non issue compared to what others may think. Mine started as block 1.5 now sits as block 2 and haven't looked back...

I like the Block I on a 14.5.
10.3 is a close battle between Block II and Mod 0, even though they're completely different. These are the two best looking rifles out there IMO. |

I like my "Block II-ish" AR with RIS II FSP and ACOG but it's pretty heavy. The added weight doesn't really accomplish much though. It's just heavier.
I think I like the regular M4/Block I/PR style AR's better. They just feel more light and handy like a carbine should. If I had two AR's set up with the same accessories but one was a Phased Replacement and the other a Block II I'd grab the PR first every time. |

It would depend on what kind of optic I could have on this "only" gun.
If it were irons, ACOG, EO tech, Aimpoint than it would be block 1. If it is a 1-4 scope, block II. I like having a standard FSB, I like it and it worked for me until I got a 1-4 scope. It then became something I didn't want in the sight picture. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

If you're asking which I like better, and would rather have - it would a Block II.
It's a little bit heavier, and doesn't balance as well, but it's really not that bad... However, the Block II basically does everything better "all around" than the Block I - FF barrel, more space for grip, and add on items like a CNVD without having to re-arrange the whole rifle, bipods if desired, etc. without feeling crowded. If you don't have/don't have access to those things, it's perhaps a non-issue, but I prefer to be able to have the capability to do so if circumstances change. The longer gripping surface of the RIS II also make it easier to manage the weight of a suppressor at the end of the long barrel. That being said - as I do not get a RIS II equipped rifle for work, in my particular situation, if you told me, "you can only keep one," it would be a standard, USGI M4 MWS clone, much closer to the Block I... though I reserve the right to accessorize it as I see fit.

That said, if budget is an issue the Block I is the better choice. Ris II ain't cheap! |

Brownells is running a sale on the RIS II FSP in black for $150 as we speak. Pick one up with a couple cans of Aervoe and you're well on your way to Block II clone status.

Block II for me, I guess. I grew up shooting a 20'' A2. I like the 12'' handguard. I tried using a KAC rail on a 6920 carbine once and just didn't like it. I like my support hand further forward. I don't have applied knowledge/real world experience with these things though.

Block II all the way - whether pertaining to a 10.3 or a 14.5.
FF alone is enough of a reason. Extra rail estate as well. |

Also, I have noticed that the heaviness with a Block II has probably more to do with the placement of the accessories than the basic setup. On Block II's all the lights, lasers, etc. tend to be as far out as possible on the rail which make it seem less balanced and more heavy. I think you have to be more considerate of the weight of each item you want for a Block II than you would for a I/PR. You could take a SF952 and Peq-15 from a PR and put them on a II and it would seem way more heavy than the PR. I had a PR that I converted into a II, but now I find myself wanting to build a I/PR, I just miss it. I am not going to get rid of my block II, I just want my PR back. I also need to get a lighter weapon light than that super heavy 952, I think it would be better suited on a PR and a M300/600 should go on the II.
