Pushing the release with the thumb of the hand that's stripping the mag?

Thanks for the compliments - I can't take credit - I'm sure I've copied at least two or three that I've seen posted here

I haven't seen a Norgon so I can't compare.  The Knights really bring the control farther back.  Yes, using the thumb to depress the release while stripping the mag.  Now the right hand can stay put at the wrist of the stock on trigger/safety duty while the left hand can move all over doing what needs to be done.  I like it a lot.

Those are CZ EVO Scorpion sights I was able to grab on Ebay after trying for a few months.  CZ is selling them in their online store.  I know I learned of them here.  No cheek riser needed with those sights on the monte carlo stock.  They really work well for 'combat style' shooting.  Not as precise (with me and my eyes) as good old A2 style dual aperture AR15 sights.  But they were plenty good for ringing the reduced IPSC steel targets offhand @ 65 yards.  Didn't miss once and that was prior to adding the RMR.

On mine, once zeroed, the front sight post has air under the front sight post base but is still retained by the front sight post detent.  If the front sight post threads are the same, I will try to swap it with an AR15 post (It's taller) but I will have to shorten the threaded shaft a bit.  Then the post will be better 'seated' and still give me the height I need for a 50 yard zero.

That's a Midwest Lightweight Rail.  I like it a lot but I did add a GG&G 45* adapter so I can mount a Surefire Scout Light where I like it.  That rail really keeps unnecessary weight of the carbine.  It's not as robust as a LaRue - but, I don't need it to be.

I started fiddling with mounting a sling on it.  The M.I. Rail makes the front easy - I have a buttstock sling mount on the rear currently but the monte carlo makes it less secure.  I may try modding it with flush cups and lots and lots of epoxy

I'll post pics of mine when I get home but you don't need epoxy, just the IWC flush cup for the Trpy rails and a drill bit.

Digging your set up man.  I went back to my CZ Evo irons as well.  I also have a spare Insight MRDS and Burris FF 3 laying around from my Block II/ MK18 parts bin that I may have to mount like you did.  (Probably putting the Vortex on my Block II and going miniRecce) For some reason I really like the CZ sights.

Can you still see the irons through the MRDS you have mounted?  Is it a Trijicon? Looks beautiful.

ETA:  I was also using the GG&G mount you have on one of my other builds, but have recently switched over to the Inforce Haley Strategic mount of the same variety and have to admit I like it a little bit more.  It has a slightly lower/closer to rail profile than the GG&G.  However I might give GG&G slight edge in build quality.  Just my .02 on the mount, still looks good and functions just fine.

I love my Norgon ambi.  I have some of my other builds as well.  Good piece of kit.  Also what Backbencher said.  Did you find you didn't need the bolt release or just take pics before you had the piece of kit?

Maybe I'll take some pics this weekend.  I have been thinking of rattle canning mine.......  Not quite sure though.

<SNIP>
I agree those CZ irons really work well and they are good quality.  That's a Trijicon RMR and it co-witnesses with the irons just fine.  The sight picture is a bit more cluttered with the RMR there but maybe I won't mind it when shooting the carbine.  I haven't done that yet with the RMR mounted

Thanks for the tip on the Inforce Haley Strategic mount, I do wish the GG&G was a bit lower & closer.

IIRC the bolt release is an option in the gen 1 lower.  It must be purchased separately.

gadgetguy's pics are out of order (chronologically), so the catch is there in the first one, but gone in the third one.  That's what backbencher was referring to.

Hey guys thanks for the diggs so far.  I will post some specs on her later.  I'm a little busy right now but figured I'd post my very Hans inspired sight set up.  Burris Fast Fire 3.  Another phone pic:

ETA:  Rough Parts List:
ARES Short profile sporter stock lower with upgraded BHO
13.7" Hanson Middy Profile Ballistic's Advantage barrel pinned to 16" with a B.E. Meyers flash hider
VLTOR VIS Monolithic rifle length upper(12.XX")  didn't necessarily need to use a Mono upper on it but wanted to be a "special snowflake"
J.P. Yellow trigger spring
Norgon Ambi Mag Release
CZ Scorpion front and rear sights
Raptor CH
Surefire Scout 600 in a H.S. offset mount
Gear Sector short VG, used more as a hand stop
Noveske K-9 barrier brace
KAC Panels
Blue Force Gear sling attatchment point on the rail
Burris Fast Fire III on an Insight mount
10 Round magazine, more so for looks
USGI either overstock or repro sling
Tango Down Rear sling loop(I think....)

Think that about covers it.  I did used to have a Vortex Razor II 1-6 on it.  But i felt it was kind of clunky and as I stated earlier I kind of enjoy the irons on this one.  Moving the 1-6 over to my Block II project with a Bipod etc...

Also sorry for such a ginormous pic.

I am really liking not only the sight picture, but the added "handling" with the boat anchor of a variable off.  The MRDS adds that little bit of what was missing from the irons only set up.  Thanks for the idea, don't know why I didn't think of that combo on this gun seeing as I was using it on a Block II and a pistol AK I have.  I think I was wanting to run this gun in a Mini Recceish configuration and although it did a great job at it I enjoy it more so as an intermediate carbine.

Also as to where I got my CZ sights, I too got them off Ebay.  I thought I was getting a screaming deal on mine and then realized I had purchased mine through a UK vendor......  Them shipping charges....

I think you can order directly online from CZ but you need to make a profile on their website.

That's where I got mine for ~$100
It's probably been noted, but the euro scorpions came with the LPA sights, which are much cheaper and have a biiig front dot, while the export Evo3 and the Bren come with the 4-aperture, narrow front post sights that you want.

Now I just need to find a dang bolt on recoil pad that will work. Ive tried the Remington 19472 and the Limbsaver 10805 and they are both no-gos. Any one have any suggestions?

Funnily enough, there is a less expensive belt fed upper, that requires mods to the lower - but I believe uses a standard BCG.  That should work.

IIRC it was done up by B&H gun rack in FL(used to be a big dealer for Ares). It's a 9" 300,  and there was a video floating around of someone shooting it with a superior as well.

So in the end which side charging uppers work with no modification?

ASA upper is awesome

No modification to the lower necessary, but the BCG has to be modified.

That looks awesome!!

I still need to pull the trigger on one of these lowers. I keep putting it off because I keep finding other guns I want.

Gadget guy, thanks., I am working my way through the posts. I have a stock Ares SCR (very early serial number summer 2014), but I am getting a MC lower in ten days to do a self build. a buddy will help me and I will take my time., Can you point me to where I can find what modification I need for BCG? Do all prospective side charging uppers need that or just some? I see Gibtz and XProducts mentioned. They are a bit less expensive ate 240 and 224 than $350 for the ASA

Anything else for barrel or handguard to watch out for that might be different from AR-15 build? I am going to try and read up as much as possible on this thread but any advise would be helpful

The Gibzz upper doesn't require any modifications to the BCG.

Think those are identical to Gibbz with the addition of the side rail.

X-Products, NFA, Gibzz are all made by the same company.  I don't know that it's Gibzz making them, they were just the first to market them.  If it looks like the Gibzz, it's made by the same company.

There are at least 3 other distinct non-reciprocating side chargers, Matrix Arms, JP, and ASA.

Thanks so much to everyone responding.  I notice the Xproducts one says: The X-15 SCU unlike other side charging uppers that place the charging handle in line with the bolt, instead its operation is elevated to work with the modified cam pin.

My main purpose in side charger is to help deal with scope being low and far back on my firs SCR affecting somewhat my use of normal charger.( I use a scope due to half correction monovisoon in my dominant right eye which is perfect for pistol but requires scope for rife. ). this is the scope I have on my original  and I love it, but it is far back on the SCR and low: http://www.midwayusa.com/product/547415/burris-mtac-rifle-scope-30mm-tube-1-4x-24mm-illuminated-reticle-with-fastfire-iii-red-dot-3-moa-dot-and-pepr-mount-matte?cm_vc=ProductFinding

does this mean the xproduct's  operation would be higher up and possibly less of a benefit in my case  than a side charger that is not "elevated"?

I sent ny BCG to ASA to have the mod done. It's just a notch cut in the front left side of the carrier face for the handle catch. When I bought mine it was only $200, and the mod was free(maybe it was during a sale, Idk). I went with ASA cause I wanted a brass deflector and dust cover, which the gibbz and x-products don't have.

According to research I did, the NFA upper is made in house by them, very similar design to Gibbz and X-products, but slightly different. Not sure who makes the other two though.

Have to be careful with the Gibbz/x-products though because the early(gen 1, I guess it would be) do not work. The upper has to have a cut out at the rear that, on an ar-15/m-16 that space is utilized by the M-16 FCG, but not on a standard AR-15 fcg. The SCR uses that space for part of its trigger assembly, the gen 1 uppers didn't have that cut out.

Pic below is a gen 1 gibbz on the left, and a spikes standard upper on the right, arrow is pointing to the cut out I was talking about

Gadgetguy.  thank you very much,  I see deflector and cover are beneficial. i think that is a great option for a lot of people, Still in my case a mod o the carrier group to something that I assume is neither normal for the AR or normal for the SCR adds a complication that may not be best for me. If I have one normal Ares upper and one Ares with  side charging  upper if I ever needed to swap around any parts I maybe best off with the BCG the same.  proprietary is added complication, proprietary and modified is another level.  I do like to consider what will go on with my heirs where they may be able to find a spare Ares BCG or or a gunsmith would be able to research it, and a modified version of an already proprietary group adds another complexity  -- at least for me

So what would be the feasibility of throwing an SIG MCX upper on one of these lowers? You wouldn't have to swap bolt carriers and it gives you the flexibility to use a piston system.
