I really want to put the upper from this rifle onto a SCR.

Now if only I could actually find any information on who made it or how.

Apparently DOW arms made it, in 6.8 spc no less.

The receiver is ASA.  Looks like some sort of piston system and some custom work.

Seriously.  It's not even a MC stock.  If anything, he should have put a cheek riser on the stock.

That would be really nice with a matching 1100 walnut stock.  Definitely ASA upper (I have the same one), but the handguard is the interesting part.

Agreed. It may just be optimistic thinking, but it does look to be rather similar in height to CZ evo sights. Which would be fantastic.

Hanguard is from an FAL:

Its a FAL handguard, FAL front sight/gas block assy, and FAL descended charging handle (ASA derived their charging handle from a L1A1)

The bigger question is about the configuration of the barrel nut and handguard retaining ring, as well as what exactly the gas system actually is.

Nope.  It's described in detail here:

https://books.google.com/books?id=6Ocu_C6xMdwC&pg=PA223&lpg=PA223&dq=dow+wood+6.8&source=bl&ots=g4L7RdEYwE&sig=k3gEcnzI4v2AeN8WBpMWMBj5aE8&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjl3fmqsdbJAhUF9R4KHVZ2BL8Q6AEIJDAA#v=onepage&q=dow%20wood%206.8&f=false

(Link takes you to page 223 - ironic, since it's actually a 6.8 AR - but the description starts on page 222.)

From the book above, the FAL gas system is not used.  A standard AR gas system is hidden inside the handguard.

Was it basically a dissipator setup as mentioned above or did it use the FAL piston?

Can't answer that. Though I'm betting it's the same rifle from the article.

Check the link posted by CarpNY, on page 224 it shows the gas system. And it is a dissipator style.

That being said it would be rather awesome if it was a piston, or even an adjustable DI system, but I wont complain about what it isn't when what it is is so awesome.

Anyone know if the gas block on the factory SCR upper will fit a 0.750" journal?  Given the lightweight profile of the barrel, I assume that it has a 0.625" journal.  However, looking at the front, the gas block appears to have an inner sleeve, suggesting it could fit a 0.750" journal if that is removed:

I would like to use their sights on a particular build, but the barrel that I want to use has a 0.750" journal.

1100 stocks are supposed to fit, perhaps w/ some finagling.  What are you going to do w/ your extra shotgun shells?

I need advice.

Currently putting together and Upper for an Ares Monte Carlo SCR receiver.

I'm going with the following.

Crowned 16" Stag barrel, carbine length, low pro gas block.

https://www.stagarms.com/crowned-16-5-56-m4-barrel/

Gibbz Side Charging upper

https://gibbzarms.com/?product=g4-side-charging-upper-receiver

Larue Tactical 13.2 Handguard

http://www.larue.com/larue-tactical-ar15-132-handguard-lt15-132

I'm not sure which Sights/Scope to buy or which bipod?

I just want a relatively accurate rifle out to a couple hundred yards.

Thanks

That's gonna look nice. If you are looking for something other than a red dot I'd say a 1-4x would fit the bill nicely. Lot's of those to choose from.

As mentioned, I would go with either the Strike Eagle, or the PA 1-6x  if weight is not an issue. I'f your concerned about weight at all then look for a lighter 1-4x. The 1-6x's are nice, but they are noticably larger and heavier than my 1-4's.

Still hoping for an answer on this (from ARES or otherwise; email not answered.)  Can the factory gas block be made to fit a 0.750" journal by removing what appears to be an inner sleeve?  I have a very specific build in mind, but it hinges on a barrel with the standard (not lightweight) journal size.

Interesting thought.  The front sight is definitely designed specifically to fit around their own low-pro gas block.  Could be a sharp drop after the journal.  Seems to align a little too perfectly, but then again, they designed the barrel for use with their own gas block.  Guess I'll just call and ask on Monday.
