I was going to make a straight M4 looking SBR, carry handle et al. I know the M4 is a 14.5 inch deal, but it seems that 14.7s are the new thing because you can pin on a regular a2 flash hider and be legal. Well, its an SBR so that's not really an issue for me. However, unless I opt for a $600 colt, LMT, BCM, or CMMG upper, all the rest that are affordable (<$400) are mainly 14.7s. Is there really a huge noticeable difference, or is it just a peace of mind issue?

LMT 14.5" for $450.

.2" isn't gone make any difference. but I like to stick with the bigger names. Colt, LMT, DD, Noveske...etc IMO, if you have the money, they are worth the few extra bucks.

I wouldn't go the SBR route for 0.2".  Go 14.5/A2X or 14.7/A2.

If you already have an SBR lower then go 14.5/A2.

Since I already have an SBR lower, I went with a Colt 14.5" barrel.

My question is, why SBR with a 14.5" barrel? Why not save your money and a lot of time and just have an extended A2 FH pinned and welded?

These are my 14.5" M4-types with pinned and welded FHs.

As long as you do not decide to replace the FH anytime soon, pinning and welding is a much smarter option.

Since it's going on an sbr lower, go with a 14.5".

I don't know about recently, but colt 14.5" barrels go for about $200 all day on the EE

I have two SBR lowers right now, so the shortness of it doesn't bother me. I already have an LMT 10.5 and a CMMG 4.5" 22 on a full lower (no folding stock), so I can throw it on either of those. I'm not sure why I want the 14.5, probably because it reminds me of being overseas with my M4. I also don't like the look of that stretched out 16 inch M4 barrel. I was curious about the 14.7 because PSA has an upper on sale for Christmas.

The 14.7" barrel allows for permanent attachment of a "regular" sized muzzle device, as opposed to an elongated one needed for a 14.5" barrel. This is all moot if you have an sbr, go with the 14.5", it will be more "correct" clone wise
On the other hand, if it's a great deal, I don't think you'll ever get called out on .2" of extra barrel

If you want a 14.5" then don't "waste" one of those SBR lowers with it. Get another lower and then you can build two SBRs.

Just my $0.02...

Oh, and I would consider the BCM 14.5s to be very affordable given that they come with the BCG. If you're looking for a <$400 upper, just think of it as a $400 upper with a $35 BCG.
