I decided to undertake the project of shaving my FSB to mount an extended FF rail. I am happy with the results. The hardest part was removing the the FSB tha BCM mounted on there. That thing was hard to remove. I thought I was going to break something banging away on the taper pins. I did have one accident though the punch slipped on the rear pin and put a nice gouge/nick in the barrel. Bummed me out but I will hit with some cold blue and call it good to go. Here is the finished product.

The rear part is a bit wider than the front but it is contoured the same so it looks good. Now I just hope it small enough to fit under a Troy Alpha rail. I know, I know. . . .Troy. . . . but they make a good rail. This is going on a rifle length gas system with a 20 inch barrel. I think it will look nice.

I've been wanting to do this to a couple of mine. Always confused by which way to drive the pins. Looks to me they drive out Left to right, as I am looking down the sights.

That looks really good.....How did you finish it hi-temp flat paint?
Question...when you take the fsb off do you reuse the pins?

Pins are tapered and come out left to right when looking down the gun. I finished it off with 4 coats of rustoleum high heat. It is rated to 2000 degrees. I used. Cupped punch to not damage the pins. I plan on reusing them.

Looking "down the gun" from the butt end or the muzzle end???

It's easier to say from the ejection port side or the side opposite of the ejection port (clarifying whether it is a right-hand or left-hand model).

That's a very nice shave job you did on that FSB!!!

One of the nicer jobs I've seen.

Shoulda just left it on the barrel, makes it easier to hold onto while grinding. I've done it twice.

Thanks for the compliments. I just put a rag in my vice and clamped down on it to secure while I worked on it. I used a pencil to draw the shape I wanted and went to town.

That is what I did.  The beer made me knick the gas tube though.  I had to take it off anyway when the new gas tube came in.

You have to take it off at some point to remove the handguard end cap, but it is easier to grind on the barrel.

You could cut the end cap off with a Dremel without removing the FSB if you wanted to.

Nice clean job. Man, have I seen some hack jobs, some folks shouldn't be allowed to use power tools, let alone a rifle, lol!!!!

Very nice.  I did one on my daughters carbine for a Troy rail.  I was not brave enough to take it though.  Pretty amazing what you can do with the little Dr@m*7 sanding drums.

Wow, great job. Looks better than mine by a damn mile. I make the mistake of not taking mine off the BCM barrel that it came stuck on.

Good thing its covered under some Rainier Arms kit.

The hardest part for me was getting it symmetrical. Also I couldn't get paint to stick well without roughing it up a bit and baking it on.

I had to do an extra bit of trimming. My rail should arrive tomorrow but I tested how well the shaved fsb would fit under a DD MFR rail I have because the rails have similar dimensions. It cleared but I wanted a bit of extra room just to be safe. I narrowed it up a bit and took off some from the top to make it lower. It should be GTG.

Pins will go in after a I test fit everything. The FSB is a nice tight fit to the barrel. I had to put a little lube/oil on the barrel just to make it slide easier. I will post a pic of the rifle after I get everything on.

Nice job.  Fits like original and should clear any FF HG you select.
