A Crusader barrel, Centurion CMR, and a short Ops style reflex can is REALLY starting to sound good. And then another just like it with a Geissele SMR!

Guys, anyone got some chrony results from your shorter barrels, especially the 12.5" 5.56 guys? VMPGlenn sent me some of his numbers a long while back and I'm always curious to see what everyone gets. I don't have a chronograph yet so a lot of my entries in ballistic calculators are just guesswork.

Chrono results from a 12.5" Centurion Arms barrel below.

XM193: 2900 fps
FGMM 69gr: 2440 fps
FGMM 77gr: 2283 fps
Mk262 clone (77gr SMK): 2500 fps
Hot 5.56 handload: 2600 fps

I've got more data somewhere but not on the flashdrive I have with me.  Hope that helps.

I am really happy with this set up.  It is an incredible shooter, chews up all the crap ammo I have left in my misc ammo can.
All I need to do now is paint it.
I am thinking about adding a red dot on the NF, what are your thoughts on if and which one.

Nice! How's it shoot? I'm really thinking about doing something similar with a 13.7" Rainier UltraMatch or maybe the Noveske.

It's great. Could just be me but it feels to be a softer shooter than my old 16" middy, maybe something with the mid length in a shorter barrel gas magic. It handles really well too, a little lighter than my old 16" setup and the weight is more centered because of the shorter barrel.

Very happy with it overall, still sad about how much it all cost me...but very please with the rifle itself. May sell the 1-6 here soon and just run a red dot only for weight considerations, and I never really shoot past 200 yds.

I definitely recommend a build like this, I went with the noveske over the rainier for the mid length.

Here it is wearing the SRS which is how it will probably spend most of the time. Good luck with your build, shoot me a message or email if you have a question, I'm no expert but I may be able to help.

Yep. Less dwell time can lead to a softer recoil impulse.

This is why the factory 14.5" KAC intermediate length rifles are softer shooting than the factory KAC 16" intermediate length rifles.

It's also why bar none the softest shooting 5.56 rifle I've ever fired had a KAC intermediate barrel that was chopped down to 13.5 inches. The difference between that rifle and the next softest 5.56 I've ever shot is nearly night and day - you wouldn't even believe it unless you fired it yourself.

Does a magnifier count?

I like to be able to take of the magnification to lighten the rifle, if I don't need any kind of precision.

It seems this concept has or at least had some traction in the real world.

I saw this posted before somewhere and was able to track it down with some googling. Kyle Defoor calls it a "short recce", scroll down to the 8/30/14 post for a description INFO HERE .

Here is the pic he posted.

I also recall seeing a picture of a HK 416 with the 10.5" barrel (or 10.3" or whatever it is) and a NF 2.5-10x with a bipod.  Seems to fit the bill also.

I plan to re-do my 12.5" with the 9.5" Geissele, it would look exactly like that WAR upper and all. Fuck me that's hot, Geissele needs to hurry up with a 9.5" Mk4 with MLOK

That's what really makes this its own thread. This thread is geared towards SBR RECCEs - shorter than 14.5.

My personal favorite RECCEs.

I don't think their are any hard and fast rules.  Precision from a short field useable weapon is the goal.

its not my fault you bought a Glock 34.

back to thread:

Weaver V3 1-3x or Vortex Crossfire 1-4x ?

Wanting to keep the glass under $200 as the variable will only be used for range fun and the aimpoint for anything else.

Sure. I don't think there has been an established parts list other than:

No ACOG's?  Or red dot's with a magnifier?
Link Posted: 11/5/2014 1:32:48 AM EDT
[Last Edit: AR-Ryan21] [#50]
I'd say ACOG (3-4x), maybe.

RDS with a magnifier, no.

The RDS/mag combo belongs on a CQB setup to me.

ETA - RustedAce posted arguably the sickest rifle in this thread thus far, so that may be why I have a soft spot for ACOGs in here right now.
