Hey, guys -

Sorry if this is a done-to-death question. I want to mark my ejection port covers with caliber and rate of twist. What's the best looking method that's durable (or the most durable method that's ugly and can go on the inside of the cover). I definitely don't want to go the "buy custom-engraved covers" route. Thanks.

That hard to look at the barrel marking?

well the best looking and most professional looking will be the laser engraving. next would be true engraving at a jewelers. after that probably a silver sharpie written on the cover.

I'm mystified, too.

How about degrease, use permanent marker and swipe it with marine spar varnish.

if you clean the surface and use a paint marker, ti should work for a while but you will most likely have to touch it up form time to time.

I think a Dremel would work well (with a steady hand) and then color fill the markings with Testors paint.

All my non-5.56 uppers are marked on the cover with either laser engraving or actual engraving. Things Remembered in the mall will do it for about $15. Only bring the port cover; easier for them to work with a small piece of metal and you wont freak anyone out by bringing a gun or half a gun into a mall.

Find a local trophy or jewellry shop with a 'laser engraver'. Most charge a few cents per letter/symbol and
can do custom graphics cheap as well. Be aware though that 99% of the commecial small lasers don't actually
engrave, they burn into the finish so are not good for legal marking like the NFA stuff.

In the OP's defense I can't see any of mine because of the handguard.  They were all marked in the classic place near the barrel extension and hidden by the handguard and the barrel nuts.

Think I would just paint-pen it if appearance doesn't mean much.  The BCG doesn't make contact with the flats of the dust cover so it should hold up well.  Otherwise, like others have said, take it to a place that engraves things and then do a color fill with something.

Why not just buy a dust cover that has it marked already?

how many different calibers are we talking?
300?
6.8?
7.62 X 39?
22lr?

I can find a ton of them on Ebay for $15/ea. (or less)

Paint pin? Or just remember what caliber it is from that mass between your ears?

This, or maybe get a thick rubber band to go around the hand guard and know which color represents each caliber. I would opt for the labeled dust cover for $10 each from Yankee Hill if I couldn't remeber what caliber an individual caliber was. When I was thinking of the 300 Blackout I was going to build I though of doing one in FDE furniture before I realized 5.56 gets the job done for what I'm doing...

Thanks, guys. Some cool ideas here. I'll probably try paint pen on the inside first. The engraving idea sounds pretty tempting, though...

I've got one 5.56 barrel with its twist rate marking covered, and another .223 barrel with no caliber marking. I can remember them, but the people who will inherit them if I get killed by a meteor impact tomorrow should be clued in.

The people who will inherit them should be taught to check barrel markings before assuming what to load them with. Actually, you should take the people who you intend to leave them to out shooting with the guns. They will appreciate them more that way and learn about them in the process. I know this sounds like I'm being an ass but, I'm too lazy to make it sound "softer". The statement it's self is sound though.

Sometimes those are under the handguard.  Although in my case, I don't have such a collection that I forget what I have.

For long term......laser engraving the port cover would be the best idea.

Use a diamond file just behind the muzzle.
