Got my AndroCorp Industries upper in. $400 shipped for a complete upper. It is a 10.5" but I figure at that price it's a great blank canvas and leaves plenty of room to tailor it to a MK18/CQBR project. My build will be CQBR inspired but with some small changes so I'll just be on the sidelines.

FYI, I have about 450 rounds through mine (have been too busy to shoot much lately) with no issues at all and they use BA barrels. It's a good choice for the money.

I would to know of the SF SOCOM RC Owners who shoot their MK18 a whole lot. Do you run the 4-prong Flash Hider and worry about Burning out your SOCOM RC or run SF Muzzle Brake?

I run the 4 prong, and I do not worry about wear. When it does wear out I'll send it to SF to be rebuilt. If you can afford the ammo to wear out a blast baffle you can afford to rebuild what is a wear item. The concussion from a brake on a short barrel is unacceptable to me and I personally feel that the extra suppressor lifespan gained from them is not worth it when unsuppressed.

Who is actually regularly shooting their shorties without a can on? For those who own cans at least. And the rare times when you are, is it not at the range with ear pro where it doesn't matter?

I get the whole flash hider for clone purposes thing. I just don't get the comment highlighted in red above. And you're far from the first person who has shared a comment along those lines.

I'm trying to be objective, but being realistic, I just don't get that stance. If you own a can and a shorty, when are you going to be firing that weapon without a can on in a serious scenario? Life on the line, self defense, hunting without ear pro, etc.

Most people are gonna have that can on their shorty when it counts. I'm not a SureFire can guy, but I recall a SureFire rep chiming in on this subject. Didn't a brake increase the life of the can by as much as 15k rounds or something? That increased lifespan is insane.

I guess I'm just thinking that if your MK18 or CQBR is your HD/SD weapon, regardless of muzzle device, if you own a can, your rifle will be stored ready with the can on at all times. I'm just not seeing where the added blast from the brake without a can is gonna come into play any time other than occasionally at the range - where it doesn't matter.

I will say that one of my 10.3s wears a flash hider. It's solely because I never run it with a can, and that it's my light and short KISS rig.

4 prong. Not worried about the can. By the time it gets to the point that it needs replacing, I'll already have a new can, barrel and BGG ready to go. I tried a brake but it was down right uncivilized without the can indoors and I didn't want to be "that guy".

Fair point, but I'd still be curious how often most opt to actually run their shorties without their cans on.

I never go to indoor ranges personally. So even the less than 5 percent of the time I do shoot without a can, it's not very bothersome to anyone around me.

Shit, my 16" 308 with a brake is far more obnoxious without a can than any of my 10.3" 5.56 rigs with brakes and no can.

I'm going with the lowest common denominator. I have SOCOM556-RC compatible SF flash hiders on other guns so I can't guarantee that the can will always be on the CQBR. For those times that the CQBR will be shot without the can mounted, I definitely prefer doing so with the flash hider.

Another point to note is that the 4 prong FH aligns the 4 holes in the blast baffle with the 4 openings in the flash hider. I imagine it was designed this way to reduce erosion on the blast baffle (by giving the gasses a path of least resistance to escape from). Using the 3 prong flash hider with the SF SOCOM556-RC does not allow for this and as a consequence you get a higher amount of wear and tear on the can's blast baffle.

Flash hider.  3 or 4 prong, doesn't matter.  Suppressor is a wear item, period.  Surefire will re-core / rebuild your can at a cost.  The can will have the same S/N, so no need to go through the ATF process.  It is not just about clone correct.  I just don't want the concussion and the fireball when shooting unsuppressed.  I don't like it and people around it sure as hell don't like it.  By the time the can is due for a rebuild, the repair cost would be rather small compared to all other costs (ammo, time, other wear and tear parts, etc).

I also don't believe the no ear pro claim / benefit of shooting suppressed full time.  Unless you are always shooting alone or all the people around you also have a suppressor, it is a moot point.

I'd be interested to hear if the SF 4 prong helps prevent baffle wear in even the slightest degree compared to their brakes. The SF rep was comparing their flash hiders to their brakes, and as noted, the lifespan difference quoted was very significant.

I get if someone has several rifles and just one can. Obviously you can only equip the can on one of them at a time. But I'd still point out that the can would be equipped on their HD/SD, hunting, high volume shooting, etc rig when used - and certainly when stored (at least I'd hope so).

Guess I'm one of the rare guys who pretty much never shoots without a can on.

The added protection to my cans is worth its weight in gold. An extra 15k rounds or more of can life is insane. And no one next to me will ever know what muzzle device I'm running as it all sounds the same.

I'm planning to pick up one of the new SF SOCOM gen 2 cans when they're released, as I'm guessing they've addressed some of the obvious issues and more perfected them this run. With that said, I intend to never have to send it in for a new core.

wait for the CA DMV to tell oregon state police my driving citations were for speeding and not "drugs" -- OSP says they have to investigate any things from other states, to make sure they aren't "drug offenses" which would prohibit firearm ownership. 99% of my shooting is alone in my backyard and plan on keep the can on my two MK18 MOD1, 10.5 uppers. One LMT Upper and Brand Unfired in the box Noveske MK18 MOD1 Upper. I may if Erosion is less  shoot my 14.5 with a 4-prong which will not be shoot a whole lot. I am less than a 100feet from the City Limits.

The 4 prong is tough to find and expensive when you find it. Most people running a FH use the 3 prong. I asked SF about MB vs FH and received an email stating "It will usually add about 10,000 rounds to the life of the can. However these numbers can vary depending on use. Also the cans are designed to last about 2-3 barrels." I have heard that they will refurbish a shot out can for about $600; therefore, in my opinion, everyone should be running a FH (it is a clone thread). You will have to do the math to decide for yourself. I also shoot unsuppressed, as well as suppressed at an indoor range during the summer, when the desert is closed. A break would be ridiculously obnoxious.

Can you not multi-quote in this website? That's frustrating.

Anyways Stealth is a member already, but karma will roll around. We'll get you back.

Jeff - You're in Central Florida, we need to get something in Florida together. I'm in SWFL.

I shoot my CQBR without a can on a lot actually, with a brake. It's actually a lot of fun on FA because the brake is crazy consistent at muzzle rise down and on target. Muzzle blast/concussion is pretty nuts, but it's an MG...come on.

I shot it on FA indoors when no one was around and it was us and the ROs just playing. It reminded me of one of those movie scenes where an atomic bomb goes off and you see the explosion in the reflection of someone's glasses. I was practically blinded by muzzle flash.

Realistically I don't care too much about the suppressor life. I will probably just buy another SF soon anyways if the prices of the RC goes down with the new Gen2s out.
