For a SHTF/HD-worthy lightweight setup, google "Project Featherweight"

ETA: pg 8 of the thread has nice pics of the final Krylon'd version...

Les Bear doesn't stock them.  I tried to order and he told me 6 months minimum.

In hindsight, I wish I had ordered them from him when I talked to them 9 months ago.

Thanks for the tip on Aero.  Ordered two to see how they are.

+1 that guy had a nice build, but I would change that old style hand guard to a keymod.

The gap closes up a but when you add a port door.

Nice to see aero offering those.  I was just about to offer you one of the 2 Rainier's I snagged this last time

Really?  Keymod is significantly lighter than an Alpha?  I guess I need to start looking at the Keymod type rails.  Thanks.

NOT my drawing. To my knowledge such a barrel no longer exists, it is close to the ORIGINAL Armalite AR-15 from the late 50's.

I snagged a Daniel Defense .750 Mid Length so I can have it turned to just how I want it.

Length including permanently mounted muzzle device - 16.1"
Being I'm using the A.R.M.S. 41b folding front sight (not light, but I REALLY like it!) I needed the .750 diameter

It's a cool rifle and all, but first person to come along with Cav lower and a 7 inch barrel is going to be lighter.  Ok, and an empty buffer.  Maybe just a half circle carrier, or a goofy spikes carrier with holes in it.

Yup

The new BCM Keymod will weigh in at 7.5 ounces with barrel nut, and be 12 or 13 inches long, plus you can put heat covers on it as well.

The 13" Troy Vtac Alpha weighs 13 ounces, so yea its a big difference for a Lightweight/Featherweight build.

ETA: The Keymods also have stronger loack up, and have stronger picatinny sections as well. I broke my old DD MFR rail section screws which is why I have not gone back to a tube rail until now that the Keymods are out.

I'm interested to see what price the BCM rail comes in at. Another keymod option is MI with the gen 2 SS keymod. I'm sure it is lighter than the troy/vtac also. I am still happy with my alpha rail. Even with one of the small rail sections on it I lost 1oz in comparison to the magpul MOE midlength hand guard, but got 4'' of extra hand guard.

Here's a guess
10" MAP $254
13" MAP $269

Here's a guess

10" MAP $254

13" MAP $269

So about the same price as a NSR then.

I am thinking BCM will charge more up to $385 for the 13".

You have a flair for well done AR's.

What buttstock is that?  I bet if you had just a normal ole 6 pos it would maybe hit the 6 lb mark.  Or maybe not.  But it's very nice.

OK, now you got my interest really piqued.  I've been away from the AR Discussion for a while so some of these might seem mundane.  But what mount is that for your optic?  I haven't seen that one yet.  I don't think.  And since that is an LWRC stock, is the upper that too?  I thought they were piston AR's.  Your's looks like a middy.  What barrel is that.

My guess is it doesn't get much better than what you got there.  Light, probably very accurate, and I would imagine a joy to shoot.

Heck just take those picatinny rails you aren't using off the snout of the MK4 and you'll be under 6 easily....

Thank you!  I wonder if there is a lighter mount for the t-1.  I thought I saw one that had like cut outs in the sides.   Shed another .5 ounces maybe.    LOL.

I was hoping this thread would be less chatter and more pix of rifles (whole rifles in the pic, not close ups where the stock and barrel could be missing), showing an open port with visable bolt held open, and on a scale (although I guess trust in properly zeroing the scale would just have to be as is...).

That's a really good looking rifle. That lower is nice. I like lightweight but I still want it to function how I want. I'm in the middle of putting a "budget" LW build together. I'm trying to wait on the BCM rail but getting impatient. I'm hoping for 5 lbs but 5.5 is probably more likely with my budget. I'm trying to use up some parts I already have lying around like a CAR stock, flat top upper and plug the FA, DD LW barrel with lpgb, and a 9" troy alpha. I'm planning on taking some weight out of the stock and maybe BCG. A Clark carbon fiber hg should save a few ounces over the troy. Trying to do it without coming off the money for a LMOS. We'll see. It will be fun no matter what.

Oh yeah, how much lighter is the K grip than a umbrella? I had the K before and it's light but a little small. I haven't tried the umbrella, but it looks promising. I'll compromise for ergos.

Here is the start of my lightweight build. I would like to use the Noveske lower if possible but Ill probably have to go with the Mega. Still waiting on some parts but my target weight is right at 6 lbs.
And for anyone interested, MidwayUSA has the JP LMOS bolt carrier for $209 and if you use the coupon code "GOY2013" you get $20 off an order of $200. So the carrier came out to $189 for me before shipping.

I don't keep up with all the latest stuff, so...  I've never seen a BCG like that.  Weird.  Less contact surface?  Or is it just for weight savings?

Anyways...  that looks like a nice build.

How much more does a CTR weigh over a regular 6 pos?  Just curious if anyone knows.  I'm thinking about getting one, the MOE type.
