I've been watching this thread for a while, and really dig it. Here is my 1st AR I build about 2 years ago when I caught the LW bug.
My LW Rifle I'll have to get pics on a scale in it's new/current configuration, but as pictured here's what was in this thing Tegra lower with Balios Lite Upper, Faxon 18" Gunner barrel w/ rifle length gas JP complete Aluminum LW BCG Standard A2 Flash Hider, safety selector and charging handle AP customs Gen 2 12" Carbon Fiber hand guard Syrac Arms low pro adjustable gas system Taccom Buffer with low power spring Smoke Composites Carbon Fiber long pull open stock/receiver extension Magpul K2 grip Midwest Industries half moon flip up front site M4 style flip up rear site V7 Ti Castle nut Smoke Composites Carbon Fiber endplate Drop in Velocity 4lb Trigger pack w/ anti walk pin set. V7 Aluminum Take down and pivot pins V7 LW Bolt catch, Ti buffer detent Ti Safety detent Ti Grip screw 4" Magpul ploy rail section Weight came in at about 4.5 lbs if I remember correctly. |
Since the initial build I've changed out the trigger and lower parts for part of a New Frontier LPK; I put in the poly Pins, pin detents, bolt catch detent, trigger pack, safety selector, but found that the poly safety detent put too much resistance on the safety and broke trying to get the safety selector to rotate, so I went back to the Ti one I had in there before. I changed out the poly rail section because it was too high for proper site alignment, and went with some standard Aluminum ones, adding a section at the bottom front of the hand guard. I also switched out the Castle nut for a even lighter Aluminum one. Finally I got a replacement foam pad for ACE skeleton stocks and put it on my smoke composite stock for added comfort
All together this took the weight down a few more ounces, the Lower is super light, the only way to make it lighter, without using a dremmel is to put on a K1 or similar grip, and getting the smoke composite short pull open stock, but I'm tall and have long fingers so I needed that longer stock and wider pistol grip to shoot. |
Most recently I took off the flip up iron sights and put on a 30mm Redfield 3-9 power scope and with it's mount, it jacked the weight back up to just over 5 lbs. However the alignment was just about perfect when I went to sight it in, and it makes it so much easier to aim. I had my wife shoot it for the first time on our anniversary (never shot before in her life) and after missing with her first shot, she was dead on; taking out water bottles and jugs like a pro. This was with cheap steal case ammo at about 75 yards, so not hard, but not bad at all for her first time shooting any fire arm.
Things I may still change, as light as the Smoke composite's endplate is, being Carbon Fiber, it can't be properly staked, and I'd love to put an endplate with a QD option there instead; I may throw on an AFAB mussel brake I picked up, and perhaps put a Magpul hand grip of some kind on the bottom of the hand guard. Sorry about posting 3 times in a row but, I'm wordy and newbs are limited to 2000 characters |

I didn't mention the weight without the Atlas Bipod, it's 5lb 5.2oz. This weight includes the UTG Poly 3 rail pic section, and two sections of Magpul MAG602 rubber rail cover (3 M-LOK slots ea.) That works for me.. it's super fun to shoot, and dead nuts reliable (at least in the ~700 rounds I've railed through it thus far.) The biggest reasons for building it!

Hope this silly picture ap posts the pic. Here's my lightweight Recce FIGHTING gun. As all can see on these pages, one can easily go MUCH lighter, but I wanted this to be a reasonably durable and very capable SHTF fighting carbine. Therefore weight compromises were made in favor of combat capabilities. For example, I eschewed a 17 oz. pencil barrel in favor of a 22 ounce V7 lightweight match barrel to provide better accuracy and rate of fire. Some will doubt my choices but, oh, well. She currently comes in at 5 pounds, 2.5 ounces without mag, sling, or optics. 6 lbs 10 oz with the RMR and 1x6 optic mounted. I may make further weight savings. We'll see. Here's a list of parts: Precision Arms AFAB combo muzzle dev. (heavy, but best dev for decent flash sup AND braking. Might switch to Ti Ext A2 FH to save 1.5 oz) V7 14.5 lightweight stainless match barrel (1 MOA) V7 lightweight upper rec without port door or FA V7 Ti bolt carrier SLR Ti adj. gas block .625 V7 extreme use gas tube (overkill) HIPERTOUCH ECL nickel coated trigger (excellent!) 2A Armament Ti takedown pins (not pictured) Tennessee Arms polymer lower (I know, but these things are amazingly strong! And sooo light) Vltor A5 buffer and tube to smooth recoil (reduced buffer weights) Tubbs flat wire buffer spring (reccomended!) Mission first tactical minimalist stock Magpul Maid pistol grip (heavy, but I just love the LOP) V7 aluminum end plate and castle nut Trijicon RMR 1 MOA (superb!) Vortex Strike Eagle 1x6 scope (temporary but incredible for the price) Aero Precision extended scope mount (the lightest!) Built this to be the one I'd grab if the world came unhinged. So far not disappointed. She hits well out to 600, shoots VERY smooth, swings and carries like a dream. |

I'm going to ask again (and again, and again if nec.) HOW DOES ONE POST A PICTURE (This IS a picture thread, right?) on this blog so that it appears for others and CONTINUES to appear for others? I've spent hours and still can't find the answer. Thanks.
SOMEONE! PLEASE!
HOW DO YOU POST A PICTURE ON THIS "PICTURE" THREAD SO THAT IT APPEARS FOR EVERYONE TO SEE AND SO THAT IT CONTINUES TO APPEAR FOR THEM TO SEE???? |
Okay. For anyone else who hasn't been initiated, I finally found out why pictures don't sometimes appear when posted. If you have less than 50 posts on this site, your pics will not appear for YOU until the team here has approved them. Or, so they say. Don't ask me with this is so. Argh!
Team members will be able to see your photos. Once three have approved them they'll show up for everyone. This cuts down on the inappropriate pics. So post away.

we only need about 10 more people to make the Faxon 10.3" pencil bbl a reality people. It's 15oz and will likely be the lightest practical bbl one could buy for an AR if it is produced. We need 50 pre-orders for Faxon to make it. Who's gonna step up so we can get this done?
