Pretty lofty goal unless its a pistol.  You are going to need a pistol length barrel to get that light.

Seems doable to me - something like carbon upper, polymer lower, pistol barrel (maybe) ... if you switch calibers you can eliminate the gas block and tube and maybe even buffer weight.

Not necessarily,  here is a 4.5 lb build using a 16" .625 barrel standard front sight base and standard handguards.

If he goes 14.5" with a permanently attached muzzle device to bring it to 16", goes with a lightweight handguard. And a few other mods it's easily do able.

Ahhh, no.

I "cheated", it's a plastic upper receiver. And yes, the receiver is a POS.

Rainier upper, youngs lightweight bcg, cav arms lower, geissele 3g trigger, barrel was a cmmg 1 in 7 nitrided govt profile barrel that was reprofiled by adco to lightweight. Rainier mini comp. 5 pounds and some change.

So.. I don't plan to hike 50 miles with my rifle.  Am I a bad person for preferring my rifle to weigh more than 6lbs?

No... but I wouldn't post it in this thread.

There are plenty of other places to discuss rifles over six pounds, and even a "heavyweights" picture and discussion thread.

This thread is for discussing ultra-lights.  I'd venture to guess that almost every poster in this thread has at least one other rifle which weighs over six pounds as well.

Then stay home and out of this thread, it's not for you.

My contribution:

5 lbs 15.6 oz

Nodak A1 Upper
Green Mountain 16" fluted M4 barrel
Midwest Industries SS Carbine Handguard
Core15 NiB BCG
Brownells Para CH
Magpul MOE Stock and MOE K Grip

This is an old picture, so I have to admit that she's a little heavier now with a CTR stock, sling, and grip panels.

Have a new lightweight build I'm working on now, but this time in 300blk.

On a related note, anyone know how much the Troy CQB pistol grip weighs?

I was kind of disappointed when I weighed her today . . .

5lbs 5oz

Some freebie beat up DPMS parts gave its life for this project

I don't have the money to throw at all the lightweight parts but I do have an air compressor/die grinder and end mill so I got busy with those.

Standard m4 upper, full auto regular BCG , self-windowed lower, turned 14.5 barrel, freebie aac flash hider, commercial craptastic stock (even this "lightened version is 1 oz heavier than an untouched milspec ).

I could easily turn off another 2oz of material without spending anything . . . mill off the unused picatinny rail, turn the flash hider.  Hacked up milspec stock kit + semi BCG should drop another 2oz.

Was really hoping to be in the 4s with a total of $200 invested (again, bunch of JUNK I had laying around) besides what I already had

5 lbs 11 oz. Not the lightest thing in the world, but a lot of the items I already had and decided to put together something light.

DD 14.5 pencil barrel, Tactial Innovations upper & lower, LWRC ultra compact stock kit.
I'm happy with how it turned out!

Any idea how much my new build will weigh...approx?

Noveske factory  Gen 1 upper 14.5" skinny bbl perm attached AAC NM
Magpul mid length hand guards
Magpul MBUS gen 2 rear sight
Noveske gen 1 lower
Magpul MOE grip
Magpul CTR

Would this be considered "light"?  It will be the lightest rifle I have by far.

I already wanted to do a lightweight build for my rifle. I have the mag tactical lower in FDE and an Upper on order also FDE. already put in a Daniel Defense LPK. and I believe Ill be going with the Battle link Minimalist stock. Havent decided on a hand guard but really want a 13-15" with top rail. I know that will add to my weight but I like the site longer radius. will be going with a 16" barrel because I want to keep the ability to change flash suppressors easily and will be adding a silencer if Ohios Silencer Hunting laws go through.

Back to the point this thread and the FDE thread will make me put this rifle together faster than Ill want to. Thanks guys.

Isn't a milspec stock lighter than the Battle Link stock?

I know that's what the manufacturer claims on the product page, but it says under 6 ounces.

There are numerous stocks for the AR that are under 6 ounces.

So, if it is the lightest, what does it weigh?

CAR Fiberlite stock body = 4.6 oz
Colt 6920 M4 (gen 4) stock body = 5.7 oz (w/o metal sling mount)

It saves some weight and makes a nice compact package for a non sbr. Measured it vs. another 14.5 with the same flash hider and the ultra compact equipped rifle is 29 3/4 versus right at 32 with a B5 sopmod.

I didn't weigh the stock itself but can if you want. I swapped a Vltor tube, H buffer, spring, and M4 stock it weighed 17.4oz total and the LWRC ultra compact kit was 16.4. If you compared a standard carbine buffer it would be closer to 2 oz of savings, plus a compact package.

Working on a lightweight build right now. Going to be really close to 6 lbs. I am still debating if I want to lose the FA or not...

Daniel Defense 14.5" barrel
BCM low profile gas block
MI SSK 12" handguard

So far pretty light...

+1.  The JP is a work of art, and the FA is worthless with the lightweight BCGs.

Check this out:
http://aeroprecisionusa.com/combo-sets/ar15-matched-stripped-receiver-set-no-forward-assist.html

It's even a really good deal, and in stock as well.

My only concern is that I want the AR to be 100% reliable. Okay, 99.5% reliable. But I can't remember the last time I used a forward assist. Granted, I don't shoot as much as I'd like.

And the JP is out of the question for me. But 6 lbs is achievable without it.

I think there are really 3 main areas where you can "blow it" as far as weight is concerned if you goal is a 6 lb rifle.
1) Barrel
2) Handguard
3) Buttstock

I see a lot of billet uppers/lowers but I think all of those (with the exception of mag tac) are going to add some weight.

Yeah, I think that I'm blowing it with my Wilson 13.8" hand guard. I have a MAG Tactical lower & 14.5" lightweight Voodoo barrel and I'm at 6.5 pounds. I'm sure the LAR side charging upper isn't helping. I'm still waiting on my Mission First Minimalist stock though. I'm trying to be right at 6# but it won't break my heart if I end up heavier. I'll post a pic if I actually make 6.000# or below!

If Bravo Company is not BSing people on the weight of their new Keymod rail it will be under 8 ounces which would save you nearly a half a pound. Which is a shame because you like the Wilson Combat so much.

It looks like there will be a KMR10 as well as the lightweight KMR13, but no info on their site if the 10 will be the same material.

Colt AR6720 LE. My digital postal scale indicates 5.9 lbs.  The rifle carries perfectly balanced in my hands with a full 20 rd magazine. Impressive build quality. Accurate beyond my capabilities at long range with "peep sight" aperture sights. The 4th photo shows a frying pan lid I suspended with string to serve as a homemade redneck silhouette target placed at 300 yards distance. Standing upright with handguard braced against a tree. 20 rounds fired, 9 hits.... NO WAY!  I COULD HARDLY SEE THE DAMN THING AGAINST THE FRONT POST AT THAT RANGE! Did I say I like this rifle yet? Wow. Hats off to Colt USA.

The BCM KMR is not out yet. They said about 4-6 weeks for the 13" KMR and the 10" to follow. But the KMR will be made from a magnesium alloy, and will be the lightest keymod rail on the market. The KMR13 weighs 7.7 oz with barrel nut, and the KMR10 is 6.5 oz. I can't wait; I signed up for the email reminder so hopefully I can snag one when it becomes available.
