The bore and chamber of the M16 were chromed to minimize corrosion and failures to extract.
* "Ironically by the time new chrome barrels were ready for issue, weapons maintenance had long been accorded a high priority, and the extraction problems in Viet Nam had virtually ceased" This reads as a properly cleaned M16 rifle did not need a chrome bore or chamber. A co-worker served in the Mekong Delta during the Viet Nam war and spent a good deal of time in armpit deep water, after the patrols and returning to base the M16s were dipped in a 55 gal drum of diesel fuel, blown off with high pressure air and given back to the troops for final wipe down and cleaning. * "The Black Rifle M16 Retrospective" by R. Blake Stevens and Edward C. Ezell
