For example, my newly acquired Gen 1 MAMS has two wrench flats just like all of my Gen 2's have had.

I'm assuming that maybe the early Gen 1's were the four flat versions, then later on KAC changed the design to the two flat version, which carried over into the design of the Gen 2's.

Here's a pic of mine. Notice only two wrench flats.

https://www.AR15.Com/media/mediaFiles/363550/20181108_200248_jpg-732598.JPG

Here's a pic of a Gen 2 that I recently sold. Notice it also has two flats.

https://www.AR15.Com/media/mediaFiles/363550/20181108_200234_jpg-732600.JPG

And then here's another Gen 1. Notice the four flats, or square back design, like that of the 7.62 MAMS. Hopefully, @spdrcrgts doesn't mind me using his photo for this comparison.

Last pic is of a 7.62 MAMS, just to show the similarity of the back end between it, and (what I assume to be the earlier) Gen 1 5.56 MAMS in the pic above.

https://www.AR15.Com/media/mediaFiles/363550/20181108_201617_jpg-732612.JPG

For those of you already familiar with the differences in the Gen 1 MAMS, can you give anymore information? Am I correct in my assumption that the four flat was the earlier model, and the two flat was the later one? Was one version out produced or old sold by the other, or is one more difficult to find or more sought after?
That’s an interesting observation. It is interesting. I believe it's much less common then the two flat Gen 1's. I've been looking through pics of Gen 1's for the last 30 minutes and haven't spotted another four flat version yet. Not one. They're all two flatters. Looks like @swiftimproved220 grabbed a sweet piece with this one. Will be an excellent addition to his collection.

Unless I'm missing something here, which is very possible!

ETA: Nevermind! I see what you're saying now. The QDC stuff was around in 2012, it just wasn't available yet. I knew I wasn't getting the big picture there. After rereading your post I picked up on it. Lol. So you added the Gen 1 MAMS to your Mod 1, it didn't come with it, right?

Yep I added the mams to my mod1 rifle. It came with the birdcage style FH. To my knowledge all mod1’s came with the birdcage FH. Only exception is the SR16 that came with the NT4 FH.

Mod2 is when Kac starting to use a QDC FH and was suppressor ready.

100% agree the four wrench flat is differently an uncommon version and will be cherished in my collection. Thanks again

Edit- have the perfect home for it on my mod1 Carbine upper.

My dad gave me a Colt A2 upper +bcg and hand guards so I turned it into a late USMC XM4 with a few subtle KAC goodies/upgrades.

Test fired, BZO-ed for M855, and was ringing 10"x19" steel plate at 300m with it yesterday

KAC parts are:
- Old gen NT4 flash hider
- 2 stage trigger from one of my SR25s
- Detroit PD trade in QDSS NT4 that I use for beater/demo

Very nice. Now that I see it, I think I remember the EE ad from when you bought. It was a complete rifle with a QD cup lower, and it was a pretty good price if I remember correctly. Unless this is a different one, then excuse me.

Hey what would you guys consider a good price on an SR25 lower used?   Looking for what price point you should scoop up if you see it.
Any differences in sr25 lowers, anything to watch for?

Heck yeah.

That is a cool rifle MNRidesHonda.  It reminds me of a gun I saw NickOTime show a couple years ago with a lightweight barrel, carry handle, and black NT-4.

I found the archived thread.

Very nice rifle! URX3 with that gas block is hot. Plus them dimples. Bet it’s a real shooter too and that can for the win!

Sweet. What's the new upper?

Grabbed another G2 MAMS to replace the G1. Figured I'd just add the G1 to the collection instead of using it since it's in such nice condition. Once in awhile it's nice to try and preserve something instead of wearing it out. Lol

Terrible pics, but here's the replacement. Not sure what one of the previous owners did to this thing, but as this pic shows, it was damn near raw stainless when I received it.

Attachment Attached File

I cleaned and degreased it and went over it with a cold blue pen in an attempt to bring the normal color back. Still shows a lot of wear which is fine by me, but it looks much better now in comparison to before. As a side note, cold blue pens work much better on non-stainless metals. It took a few treatments with the cold blue to get it to this point, with it darkening a little more with each coloring.

Nice about already getting a replacement mams and keeping that prestine G1 for your collection. It’s common the black finish is removed over time by cleaning the carbon off.
Here’s the new to me upper I spoke of. Great add to my small collection!

Yeah, I've seen some MAMS that were copper colored, which I assumed was from cleaning. This one was the first I'd seen that was silver. Looked cool, but once it was mounted it stood out like a sore thumb. Lol

And, man, sweet pick-up on the new upper! That is an incredible addition to your collection. Are you planning on registering another lower to replace the one you had the dimpled upper on since it'll be paired with the new upper? Two QD cup lowers would make for great pics with both of these beautiful/rare uppers installed.

Seeing those pics of your dimpled upper reminds me that I've literally been planning for months and months to send my Mod 2 barrel out to Marvin for dimpling, but I just haven't done it yet. I keep making excuses because I don't wanna be without it for 6-8 weeks. What I really want is a dimpled Mod 1 Carbine upper like yours, I'm just waiting for one to pop up in the price range I'd like to pay.

Yeah the brass color you seen in the past is probably from using a brass bristle brush. Good bore cleaner will remove the brass color.
Thanks about the upper. I don’t plan on getting another lower. Got quite a few that are SBR’s but there the newer style. And it’s fine because I have at least one now. The QD cup lower’s form 4 technically has the 14.5 barrel length on it. And I don’t plan to change that. Just will keep the carbine upper off on the shelf and keep the fsgb upper on the lower. Easy to change around if I need to.

Really like that and can’t say I’ve seen that stock used on a factory Kac rifle. Something about the stock being so minimal and old school makes it look right.

Thanks, man. I love those old N1/CAR stocks for exactly the reasons you mentioned, and more. Their overall design just flows well with the lines of an SR-15. I'd like to see one on a Mod 1 CQB or Carbine with a QD cup lower. I'm curious how it would look alongside the URX3.1. I've been swapping that one out for an LWRC Compact Stock on and off, but definitely do prefer the look of the CAR.

NT4 will only bring it out to 16" with a spacer. I believe ADCO makes one specific to the NT4.

Terrible pics, but here's the replacement. Not sure what one of the previous owners did to this thing, but as this pic shows, it was damn near raw stainless when I received it.

Yep you remember correctly. Just got another upper though and will probably use that sbr QD cup lower on it instead.

Agreed. I dig the carbon buildup on everything at the muzzle end of the gun from the MAMS.

Sig SRD762Ti. It is absolutely stupid quiet with subsonic .300 BLK. I did a silencer shoot a few years ago and Sig was down on one end with a MCX and this thing. I was next door at Dead Air and had to look over and see what the hell was going on because it was the quietest thing at the shoot. I went and shot it and was sold.

Nice, I’m not familiar with them but I bet it’s very quiet. Here’s my Liberty Leonidas. It’s an integral style upper. Can is huge and the gas is reflexed back over the barrel and gas block. It’s the quietest CF rifle I own with both super or subs. 300BLK cal

Had a really good day. Got her all sighted in @ 100 and was making very consistent shots @ 500 when prone with bipod. That 11.5” was putting in work and surprised me at that range!

Sig's silencer division was lead by Kevin Brittingham (AAC founder) for a short time before they split ways. His current company Q is doing some of the same stuff in terms of large OD (1.75") fully welded/no tube titanium silencers. The large volume cans excel with low pressure subsonic.

And the Liberty Leonidas is fantastic. At that same shoot I had an opportunity to shoot it and was very impressed. My first cans were a Liberty Mystic X and Regulator. Liberty makes some good stuff.

Thanks for the info. Know it seems like Sig has got into other products that they haven’t made in the past. Cans and optics comes to mind. And your familiar with Liberty so cool man.

Why does the Knights low profile gas block rest on the interior of the URX II rail? I put together the SBR that I’ve wanted but the parts don’t seem to work together well. Kinda defeats the purpose of a free float rail...

One of my SR-15s has a gas block with a different profile than others, and it is more of a bevel than the 'jaw-line' blocks we're used to.

You may elect to do some milling to give clearance and re-parkerize or coat it with something protective.

You can see what I'm talking about here:

The top one is what I'm referring to.

Added an LPVO (Vortex Razor) and decided to go with a two-tone look with FDE furniture. Now I can say I am finally done.
