Most of the parts that are legal to use for a civilian, semi-automatic build are original... which still leaves it more than 50% repro, re-purposed, or modern parts.

The "bigguns" are the upper, gas block, barrel, and gas tube, which are all original - that being said, there was a gasket piece that was missing between the gas tube and barrel that John Brace (braceman) fabricated for me, and he also took measurements off the gas block, and I know he's made at least one reproduction piece for another member who wanted to build a clone.

The BCG is an older assembly out of a Colt Model 04 (R604/M16) with no forward assist notches - so from the outside looking into the ejection port, it looks correct, though the original M231's bolt carrier is an open bolt and striker design that could not be used, though you can occasionally get them for sale.

Handuards are reproductions as well - both SAW and Auto Weapons have them for sale - for the economical price of $450.    The repros were $50 and required some Dremeling before they would fit gas tube.

The receiver extension/recoil spring/receiver end plate assembly was a semi-custom creation of jhud, though I don't think he makes them anymore - and the selector-plate was a NOS original, and I Dremeled on the NDS-A1 lower to get it to fit.  Colt Retro no-tick selector and modern LPK to round it out.

Really the only parts that I'm missing that I could use would be the receiver extension and buffer system, which is practically impossible to find, and probably would need some major modification to function in a semi-auto closed bolt form, and the handguards, which, if I ever see them available at a not insane price, I will snatch up - but for now, the repros work.

Not a simple project - and perhaps not a terribly useful one - but it's a fun little piece and unique "clone."  I don't fire it much - but when I do, it's a lot of fun - being semi-auto and heavy as hell, it's real stable when fired, even offhand without shouldering (I like short stocks, too - but the receiver extension is really short).

Very cool. Thanks for the write up. Almost worth getting a firing port for at this point.

You have to have the flat slip ring installed before you get official recognition... And I agree, it's my favorite gun as well.

I finished my first carbine. I'm not a big carbine fan, but there are exceptions, and it was time for me to own a lightweight AR. Though it uses an A4 upper receiver, it's a pseudo IDF clone. It wears a lightweight profile 1/7 twist barrel from a Colt 6520, an A1 flash suppressor, a slip ring, an A1 port door, an A1 pistol grip, FAB Defense six hole "skinny" handguards (that I found out about in this thread and absolutely love!) and an Essential Arms aluminum mil-spec CAR stock on one of their two-position tubes (love this part, too!), all on an Aero Precision lower receiver (I've wanted to build on one of these for years now). Needless to say, it's a light little thing. It's strange setup, but I did the complete build and used exactly what I wanted. I love it!

It does technically have a light and a rail...but I feel like it's pretty damned simple by the standards of this wayward suffer of years of BRD.  Also I like it.

Completed two important steps this week.
Received my Nodak XM16e1 lower engraved with my SBR info and got the colt barrel back from getting chopped to 12.5"
I held off on getting it reprofiled to .625" which turned out to be a poor choice. I will definitely send it back out to get reprolfiled. I've got the .625 FSB in the pic as well.

I came up with my final incarnation of my Featureless SP1 or GUU-5/P AR15 retro Carbine clone.

Final Parts List:

NDS 601 slab side lower
Colt early square forged upper (carry handle type, no forward assist)
Colt charging handle
Standard carbine length 7 hole handguards (maybe Rock River)
Colt 1/7" twist 6420  16 inch "pencil barrel"
Custom Muzzle Brakes "Tactical TriDelta" brake
Early Colt slip ring
Colt carbine gas tube
Complete lower parts kit, including trigger guard, is Colt from an SP1 (FCG) and M16A1 the rest
Solar Tactical kydex paddle for featureless on an M16A1 Colt grip
Colt M4 mil-spec lower receiver extension (buffer tube)
Original 1980s vintage Colt "N"marked Fiberlite CAR15 stock, pinned (UGH!)

After resetting the barrel to remove too much cant in the FSB from over torquing, and replacing the errant rifle action spring with a Colt Carbine spring, I took her up to the woods again today to battle sight her.

Ammo used was:
Centurion M193 (2008 vintage)
Federal/Lake City brown box XM193
21.5 grains IMR4198 with 55 grain FMJBT and CCI #41 primer
25.5 grains IMR4064 with 55 grain FMJBT and CCI #41 primer
Lake City military M855 62 grn
MK262 Mod1 77 grn OTM (Sierra Match Kings with chanular)

I got it about right with some M193 Federal, then finally dialed it in at 25 yards for MK262 MOD1.  The MK262 MOD1 was awesome, shooting under 1/2" at 25 yards from a casual rest. This sighting should be good for steel and two legged zombies out to 250 yards, but I will fine tune the sighting when I get to a regular range.

I spent about an hour and a half in the woods after that bouncing pop cans and pine cones from 35 to 60 yards or so, off hand, standing position.  Function was 100% with both a standard 3.0 oz buffer and a 3.6 oz H Buffer.  As far as felt recoil, I prefered the H Buffer, and will run it.  That, coupled with the TriDelta really tamed it for rapid fire.

After about 300 yards of mixed ammo,, including some rapid fire mag dumps, I have 100% confidence in this as a defensive carbine!

I mean... they could use any magazine you could fit in them.

But yes, primarily intended to be used with thirty-round magazines.

Yes, you were supposed to "walk" your rounds in - but the intent of the port-firing weapon was to repulse human wave attacks by Soviet hordes that were probably moments away from crawling all over your vehicle.

Most of the firing ports didn't last very long, with the Army deciding that more armor was probably more useful for protecting the vehicle than having port-firing weapons.

Around 2006-7 they briefly considered resurrecting the M231 in a remotely operated mount and with an MGW 90 round magazine as part of the M1A1 Abrams "TUSK" (Tank Urban Survival Kit) as the "Tank Commander's Light Automatic Weapon," but was ultimately dropped.
