Well, technically you're both right. The A1/C7 upper was only used on M16A2 weapons - both the M16A1E1 (transitional A2) and the M16A2 carbine, both barrel lengths.

Lose BAD Lever and Light and its perfect

Lights are functional and should be on any serious rifle. I don't see why a KISS rifle couldn't have a wml.

I hate to be that guy, but you were right the first time.  Both the Upper and Lower on that SBR are A2 spec.  The Upper is a 723/C7 style, also known as A2 w/field sights, the lower is later A2.  Still a cool piece.

Does this count as KISS? Waiting on a Carry Handle to replace the KAC and this rifle is done.

I feel you, this guy is probably my favorite and if I ever my stamps get back, it'll be turning into a 10.5'' with a Rugged Surge.

I'm kinda tempted to make it a 762x39 10.5'' though

@HungLo

Thanks

The light mount is the one that comes with the ProTac Rail Mount 1 kit from Streamlight. It is an amazing light for 100 bucks. it will work with 123's or AA's. It comes with tapeswitch, mount, and button tailcap. Then I have the light attached to the FSB using a Midwest Industries mount I got on amazon for 30 bucks.

Light:

I'll play;
Was looking for an "IDF" style thumper, and traded into this:

It shoots incredibly well as is, but I wanted to tweek it a bit.
[Absolutely NOTHING wrong with the original config. by the way....]

So I swapped the upper for an A3 flatty, and added an ACOG, RX01NSN.

A3 flattop.
11.5" E.R. Shaw barrel with fixed 5.5 Flash supressor.
Rguns lower, with 2 position stock, aluminum.  Tango Down grip.
LaRue A1.5 fixed rear sight.
Trijicon RX01NSN ACOG.
Proctor sling.

Super light, super fast, excellent balance!

ETA***  Just picked up a US mil. removable carry handle, so that I can have the option of going flat-top, or A2.

Hey guys, I have a spare A1 upper and 16" Colt Socom barrel laying around that I am heavily considering turning into a KISS/IDF carbine.

My question is did you guys have to cut M4 feed ramps in to your upper receivers or is that not an issue?

You can get the elastic handguard bands there too... Good people and fairly quick shipping for overseas dealer!

I'm in the "OK" with my upper, haven't had any issues.  It's a 604 Upper(LM code early 70s, no bump), DPMS pencil bbl(.750 GB) w/M4 extension.  It serves two roles, the IDF clone with all the accessories and when stripped of the bands, mag holder, and IDF sling then reslung with a VN era seatbelt type, it's a early 723 circa 1984.

ETA:  Just like this, from the 1984 Colt catalog:

Here's a original upper that was for sale a few years ago, mines exactly the same(except the pin/weld on mine, dumbass NFA)

Mine is my favorite modern rifle, mostly due to how simple it is combined with the fact it weighs 6.8 lbs with a loaded 30rd surplus mag(28rds of 193).  Some things just work, and I see why the Joos still field these in numbers despite their age and condition.  I wouldn't hesitate to use mine in a daytime/conventional SHTF situation, I like it that much.

That 16" SOCOM needs to be Block 1.5'd or 2'd, I love my Block 1(my primary SHTF).

Seems to me with all the interest in retros, someone could produce a high volume of moderately priced A1/SPI uppers and make a huge profit, like an Anderson or some producer like that. $150 for Brownells, Nodaks etc.are just too expensive. An A2, which has more parts can be had for less than $90 in a lot of places.
