Yeah, that scope looks like one of those cheap BB gun scopes you buy for your Daisy. Which you use one time and figure you can actually see better without it on there. |

Augee has a clone of that rifle, it is basically a fiberglass FF tube with a FSB pocket and holes for punching the FSB pins in/out for installation. I bet that is what you are seeing here, not metal. That handguard retaining ring looks like a KAC or Armalite, and neither did a plain aluminum FF tube that I know of. You might be construing tape or something for knurling. |

Without going back and digging up the exact story - as I understand it, the Armalite fiberglass FF tube and SR25 FF tube are quite closely related, and IIRC, Armalite licensed the barrel nut design from KAC that they continue to use. Presumably, again, without digging up exact dates, this photograph would predate Armalite's FF tube production, hence why an SR25 handguard would have to be modified to achieve the result, which would effectively be that of a modified Armalite tube. Armalite also license produced the M4 FF RAS Long, again, presumably, for military use, not commercial sales; and their modern "M-15" railed handguard bears a more than superficial resemblance to the M4 FF RAS, though they're far from identical. These kinds of modifications were also done with what appear to be Bushmaster and/or Olympic aluminum FF tubes as well. With all that being said - the idea of a "sniper" or "precision" M16 carbine variant is not one of those things that you can easily "pin down" to one organization to the extent that you can say that someone "originated" it, the "need" is somewhat intuitive, and precision M16 variants have been being developed pretty much since the M16 existed, and even the first AR15 variant had an optional scope. ~Augee |
