How well does the .50 beowulf perform, if it even will, out of a 10.5-12.5" barrel?

Pretty broad question.

What specifically are you looking for?

Ballistics from a 12" barrel can be found here:

That sounds great! As the 12" data shows, the Beowulf does do that.

Reviewing that data, you could expect that a 10.5" barrel will lose another 30-60 FPS from the 12".

Remember, though, that barrel length and weight is in your favor with a round like the Beowulf. Shooting the 16" is a lot like shooting a 12 gauge slug gun, so as you drop down in barrel length, you get more and more of that effect.

A lot of people buy 8" barreled S&W 500's, shoot them once and then sell or put them in the back of the safe because they aren't real pleasant to shoot. Be careful that you don't create that situation for yourself. The S&W was designed as a hunting round, not as a plinker. The Beo is more pleasant with some barrel, as are all the big bore AR's. 12" is certainly short enough for most uses, and about as short as I would go with any of the big bores.

Good luck in your quest and happy shooting!
