Asking any MK14 owners out there if they can get their rail to rotate. I just installed the 9.5" MK14 and can't seem to get the rail to stay put. I have a Magpul MVG foregrip on it and can give it a moderate slap and the rail will shift out of position. I can also grab the rail with my hand and twist it . I don't think that's supposed to happen right?
Barrel nut torqued to 40 ft/lbs. Rail bolts torqued to 8 ft/lbs. Even tightening the bolts a bit more did not stop the rotation. I have degreased and cleaned the nut and the inner surface of the rail. I have checked that the barrel nut is not turning with the rail with witness marks and does not appear to be. Just concerned that bumping the gun around can cause the misalignment. |
|
I grabbed mine the other day and noticed it had rotated too. I assumed I hadn't tightened it enough so I reinstalled and tightened it right. We'll see if it happens again.
ETA: after tightening it I couldn't get it to rotate with hand pressure. |

Bump. I sent an email Thursday after noticing that taping my rail rotated it, responded Friday, and sent an update Saturday, after noticing shooting two mags will rotate the rail all the way over.
Just hoping for a response ETA: got my response, thanks y'all! |

Interesting, after reading this thread I started playing with my Mk14 and being able to exert a little more pressure (using a fixed front sight), the rail rotated on me.
I'll try retorquing the bolts when I get home from work to see if I just didn't have them tight enough. ETA: No dice. Removed the rail, thoroughly degreased the barrel nut/inner rail, then retorqued to the full 8 ft. lbs. It's definitely tighter, but with a few pounds of rotational/lateral pressure on the fixed sight (I'd imagine something similar would happen with a VFG), it still rotates. |

Just noticed this on mine last night. No matter how tight I turn the bolts, the rail still moves. All I have to do is grab the rail one handed and twist. I've already got an email in to Geissele.

Figured you guys were all knuckleheads....
Went and tested mine and sonofa... Email sent. I hope there is a quick solution as this is my favorite handguard to date |
|
I'm really hoping they go back to set screws across the board...

Has anyone experienced this on a MK4 with the tabs? Or is the issue caused to the new design of the main cross bolts on the MK14?

Give us a call at the shop or email [email protected] and we'll get you squared up right away! I'm no engineer but it seems that it would be hard to tighten the rail down to the barrel nut with that solid block of aluminum where the cross bolts go on the MK14. I noticed on the MK8 that the same area was machined out so if you tightened the cross bolts it would cinch the rail down to the nut. I hope they fix this as the MK14 was a sweet rail. |
|
Why did they even get rid of the set screws? Was it a cost saving measure? Its one of the reasons I got my mk8 over the competition. And without them the reason I'll go with a competitor.
|
|
This is very disappointing to hear. Were there any of the mk14's made with the set screws or are they all tabs?
|

I've got a mk14 still in the box that I bought from PSA. I'm debating sending it back and getting a mk8 instead. I'm really tempted to mount it and see if it works out ok. I have another rifle with a centurion cmr which uses a similar anti rotation design (tabs) and barrel nut. In the 3yrs I've had it, it hasn't rotated, so I wonder if the mk14 might work.
|
|
how is it rotating? I thought the tabs are suppose to hold it in place? Are your tabs broken off?

The tabs still allow for a tiny bit of rotation. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes |

So I went ahead and installed my mk14. I followed the instructions, as others have stated they did as well. Sure enough, the rail rotates, regardless of how tight you get the bolts torqued down.
But, I decided to deviate a little... I took it out and put 2 - 30rd mags through the rifle in approximately 1 minute to get it nice and hot, then tightened the bolts down as tight as I could. It seems to have solved the problem. The rail won't budge at all now |

Guys I am sorry that no one has responded here a little more formally. Even a little movement is not acceptable. We had an issue with our boring operation that resulted in too much material being left in the area where the cross bolts are located. There should be a channel running down the center which allows the rail to microdeform around the barrel but when the screws are torqued down. This was missed and it is our own goof. But here is what we are doing. We are making more rails as we speak, I should have some of them back starting in a week or so. But in the meantime if you have one that's rotating, give us a shout at the shop and email in to [email protected]. We will give you a choice of mk4 or an mk8 as a loaner and as soon as we have more of the specific rail you ordered we will send it to you. Then you'll have the option of keeping the loaner for $100 or we will give you a return tag for loaner (say hello to blem sale 2018!). Of course all of this is at no cost to anyone this is all or goof.

View Quote I've got a 15" MK14 sitting untouched halfway around the world (currently deployed and my first Geissele rail was on my things to get list) that wont get installed until October or possibly November. Is there any way, without installing the rail myself and seeing if it moves, to know if it is missing the channel that allows it to deform? Something I can ask someone else to check for me so I don't come home to a loose rail? I ordered on 25 May, if the date ordered helps determine which rails are effected. |

This may be a stupid question if there ever was one, but if the rails rotate, could we just take them off and have a local machine shop cut the channel to save time? If so, could you post a picture of what they'd need to do? View Quote |

This is not good vs bad, because we do not have any more in stock at the moment i can compare to. but here is one vs an MK4, and you can see the channel i am referring to. The mk13/14 channel is not as dramatic as the MK4/8 but it needed to be much deeper than the one pictured. https://image.ibb.co/nw9Kp5/IMG_6558.jpg View Quote |

Hey guys If you want to send us over pictures of your rail so we can see whats going on, please send them to [email protected]. This way we can make sure to treat everyone on an individual basis and take care of you right away. If your rail is affected we'll get everything squared away ASAP.

Out of curiosity, what kind of macbine operation do you use to cut that channel all the way down the inside of the handguard?
|
|
we use a lot of okuma, we will post pictures on our instagram every so often and you can see some of the machines weve expanded with, but you would see a lot of okuma.

glad to see the set screws made their way back to the rails, definitely looking forward to getting a 13" MK14 whenever I can.

I am in the same boat, I had somebody open up the rails and get pictures, sent pictures to Geissele along with my order number, and they are going to take extremely good care of me. Suggest you do the same if you can. View Quote |

Had the same issue. To say they took care of me would be an understatement. Many thanks to G customer service!

Got my loaner MK8 today.
Now I get to wait for my replacement MK14. Hopefully it won't be too long. Thanks again to all the guys at Geissele for being so cool about all this. |
