My 308 has a good deal of a powder / crystal inside on chamber. I read that this may be a salt residue from a treating process.

I cleaned it the best I can, but i can see more at the joint.

What is the long term soution? Is this a long-term corrosion problem?

Thanks

The melonite heat treat process includes a nitrate salt bath. The white powder you are seeing is salt leaching as residual effect of the heat treating. Wetter environments will get more/faster salt leaching then in a dryer environment. This is not a corrosive, and will not hurt the rifle in the short or long term. A good chamber brushing will solve most of this for you.
