Since the original
thread on this got archived I'm posting this here.
Installed a Micro Mount on a carbine-length MOE hand guard this morning. It went pretty smoothly.
A couple of notes:
1. There is not a lot of room on a carbine-length hand guard for this so the mount is installed diagonally (from 2 O'Clock to 8 O'Clock in the picture) instead of parallel to the hand guard. For the record, I knew space was going to be an issue and took this on anyway, so don't get the idea I'm bashing IWC. Anyway, this resulted in some contact between the lower ear of the mount and the heat shield. When hand-fitted off the gun there was just the littlest amount of contact between them. HOWEVER when actually putting the hand guard on the gun there was a lot of scraping as the heat shield tried to get between the barrel and the back of the QD mount. But I grabbed my Dremel and quickly ground the last ear off the left side of the heat shield and the problem was solved.
2. Also because of the limited amount of space I had to carve a little plastic out of the bulge at the rear of the hand guard to accommodate the retaining ring. I did okay but it isn't perfectly round. At about 2 O'Clock you can see where I took a little too much plastic off.
ETA: Maybe I should have used my Dremel grinding wheel for this instead of carving with a knife - would have made a nicer radius I bet. But, as you can see, it isn't even visible in the end.
Whole process only took an hour.
