OP is located in South Carolina and PSA has numerous brick and mortar shops in the state where they operate like a regular gun shop (aka other brands).
And there is no logical reason to steer clear of PSA. Plenty of emotional reasons though. For example: "I paid 3 times that for my LWRC so my LWRC
just has to be better!"
Battlefield Las Vegas knows a hell of a lot more about guns than you do and they have had no issues with PSA.
With all that said, I love my buddies DD's and will be getting a DD upper from Western Sport eventually.

I would say there definitely is a logical reason to steer clear of PSA, depending on what your needs are and how much time you have.
Henderson Defense needs uppers that don't keyhole on select fire at 15 yards. FN making a lot of the barrels for the PSA upper receivers, they're a good, cheap candidate for a machine gun rental. They use Daniel Defense and LMT bolts and bolt carriers, as they last the longest in their experience.
As far as PSA goes, many others and myself included have noticed problems with them pushing out more lemon bolt carrier groups than other manufacturers; not so much their upper receivers. Just like anything else in life, higher QC usually comes at a higher cost. Of course, if you have more time, you could work with PSA CS if you happened to get a lemon, but this is a gift for his son. QC aside, the DD is a nicer rifle, which makes a nicer gift.
No LWRCs in my toolbox over here. They are doing interesting things with their design. I'm not much of a piston AR guy. I cannot warrant their price tag for the unmeasurable change in performance.
