I took my new DD5 out for a quick spin. I brought ASYM 175 SMK and M118LR. The rifle is equipped with my Leupold Mk6 3-18x. I was shooting off a crappy and very uncomfortable bag setup since I had no keymod stuff to attach a bipod.
A couple notes on the rifle:
The charging handle was unusually hard to pull. A call to DD had a new one sent out that was much easier to pull.
The trigger felt inconsistent. It's a geissele and all my other guns with those triggers are awesome. DD also sent me a new trigger. The new one is smoother and very consistent. ( yes they wanted the other one back )
My results with the less than ideal trigger and very uncomfortable position were groups averaging about 1.2". Not shabby at all considering the conditions.
I was shooting 5 shot groups. Without the 5th and I know I was pulling shots it was in the half inch range. I suspect the rifle should be a consistent 1MOA gun once dialed in.
At home I put my rethreaded old Triple X suppressor on fired a few. It functioned fine, didnt check for accuracy but the notable thing was zero gas in the face. My LR308 was gassy as hell with that can on it.
A few things ding the rifle at this price point for me:
No forward sling mount. This should be standard on a rifle costing this much $$$. The review on Recoil mentioned one but damned if I can see it.
Cerakote would be nice. The gun is very nicely finished but once again for the $$$ a cerakote job would be nice.
The charging handle issue should have been noticed by their test fire guy.
The trigger felt nice dry firing so I can see how that slipped by. It was only when tucked in behind it and really working on the trigger did I notice it.
The replacement charging handle and trigger are very nice and DD made no bones about getting them out to me right away.
As a guy who dropped serious coin on this rifle I am a satisfied buyer. I have had a couple 308 ARs and own many 5.56 rifles. I now have the serious urge to buy a couple DD 5.56 rifles. Yeah they really do earn some respect when you get behind them.
I bought the rifle as more a battle rifle type than precision. I have a Moon built Defiance 300 win mag for serious long range stuff and wanted a 600 yd gun. I doubt you could find any 308 with more real world utility than the DD5 in that envelope. Whether banging steel or engaging bad guys I think it would hold it's own with any rifle in the 16" 308 class.
