This, plus polymer doesn't rust. It doesn't cost as much as steel, either.
Don't know if anyone has noticed it yet or not, but looking at the review videos of their new 5.56 rifle versions shown so far, they're equipped with the new polymer dust covers, too.
I'm just an ordinary, average kinda guy and just spit-ballin' here, but I'd be willing to bet that we'll be seeing these becoming standard on all of their rifles.
