My issue came when I was installing a Magpul K Grip. The same lower had previously had other grips installed and uninstalled. DD still replaced the lower and sent it home with the K grip installed.
My second DD rifle took a Umbrella grip perfectly fine.

Soooo, is it safe to say that removing the grip screw just isn't possible without ruining the lower?
I have 3 new DD rifles sitting here that I was wanting to switch the grip on.

CrimsonTideShooter: While the factory grip screw was difficult to remove, I compounded the issue by attempting to install a Magpul MIAD grip with the included screw (that for some reason is gunked with brown loc-tite). If I had tried to install the grip with the factory screw it may have worked. I fully accept blame for the issue. However, after sending it back to DD, they stated that the lower may have been slightly out of compliance. It may have been, or they may have just allowed for my mistake. Either way, their customer service has been amazing. They replaced the lower, and the rifle is enroute back to me now. They could not remove the grip from the original lower, so they have made arrangements to purchase a new MIAD grip for me. They are truly a company that stands by their products and cares about the consumer.
I have removed hundreds of grips. This is not an exaggeration. Last year, when my wife was dealing with pregnancy complications I stayed at my National Guard armory on a detail while the unit went to a local base for training. My task was to remove the grips from an Infantry Company's M4's (about 130) and replace the spring. The screw should come off with minimal effort with an appropriately large flat-head screw-driver. My recommendation is to proceed with your grip swap. If you encounter significant pressure removing the screw, you should stop and contact DD for guidance on how to proceed further.
Rest assured, Daniel Defense will take care of you if there are any issues.
