By the way, Steve, please pass on to the responsible person my compliments for the change in the current trigger guard shape from the original flat-bottomed, square-backed one (which I thought was especially ugly). Damn, I might just have to pick one up now... Forrest Edited to add: I meant 'square-fronted' one, of course, but I'm sure that goes without saying... If I remember correctly, you somewhat patiently waited for an LAR-8, so you have an idea of what I am talking about. Well, ordering right after the SHOT Shot 'unveiling,' I think that it was slightly over five years before I finally received my first LAR-8 . Originally ordering an LAR-8A2, the first that I received was an LAR-8A4 (I converted the order upon RRA's advice), with a second LAR-8A4 a few months later. I finally ended up with an LAR-8A2 about a year later. I have been very happy with these three LAR-8s (all 20in rifles), as I also have been with all of the many LAR-15s that I have... I've put the LAR-47 on my 'bucket list'... Although this might not be the best place to mention it (and please feel free to move this comment at your discretion), I'd be happy to see (and purchase) a RRA LAR-74. I have a S&W M&P-15R (in 5.45x39mm) that I'm happy with, but I'd be even happier with a RRA rifle. I know that the recent ban on the importation of Soviet 7N6 probably influences any RRA decision about such a rifle (because it potentially decreases the market), but I'd like one... Anyway, keep up the good work... And hang in there... Forrest |

We said early on that once the 47 was knocked out and shipping, we would look at a 74.
The ammo situation has thrown something of a wrench into that, but it hasn't killed the project. I too have a Smith R and am relying on my older C-Prod mags to feed it. I too would also rather hit the stock of 74 mags out there for use in a dedicated platform. Steve/RRA Edited because I think faster than I can type. |

Be nice to see a pistol version come out in the 11.5" flavor or 8" flavor. Glad to see these are finally hitting the shelves and congrats to RRA/Steve for making it happen. Looks much better than the MGI option.

We'll have to do some testing to see what barrel length and gas system will work best, but I;m sure we'll get there (pistols and SBR LAR-47s) next year sometime. Steve/RRA |

Do they use a standard barrel nut? I plan on buying a delta and putting a free floating extended hand guard on it

Certain components are different based on the caliber or necessitated by the magazine used, but everything else is pretty much regular LAR-15 (platform size) parts and pieces.... In your case, you'll use the barrel nut that comes with the free float handguard (Delta uses a drop in handguard, so it uses a standard barrel nut and delta ring kit. Steve/RRA |

I like my LAR47. Only minus I found is the mag they send with the gun. I would rather have a pmag or even better a surplus steel mag.
I like the 2 stage trigger. I like the fact that the rifle comes with a usable case. After I put a scope on my rifle it fit in the case. I did modify my tapco 10 round mag to fit in the gun but it will not pickup the rounds. I think it sits to low. For me this is a great gun. I like the ar and the 7.62x39 round. Great job RRA. Keep up the good work I ran 60 round through my today not one problem. |

[#10]
We had all sorts of problems with the Tapco magazines. It was one of the few that we couldn't get to work (along with drums, US Palm, and one or two here and there of just about every mag tested...steel. poly. bakelite, etc...)..
The poly mags we've been shipping with have been working fine so far. Steve/RRA |

welli just shot my lar47.....all i can say is WOW!...this thing is absolutely awesome!it shoots 3/4 inch groups at 50 yds with tulammo and a eotech at a dark indoor range.my only concern is using steel mags.im afraid where the mag rubs on the front rocking point.it will wear that down?i hope not though.on my sig 556r,there was a metal plate right there to prevent that.this gun has a metal rod of some sort right there,so hopefully a non issue.i tried pmag...no worky, tried tapco..no worky, only steel mags and supplied mags work..any thoughts on other available mags that might work?

i forgot to add....i free floated this gun with a bcm kmr rail.it went right on nicely..i had reservations about the barrel profile being hbar, but i was really wrong.the gun balances real nice....thanks rra!...murica!!

I am with you. Their has to be a way to make the tapco mag work. I am going to try to modify another one and see what happens. Maybe just removing some of the top of the locking lug a bit. I thought the mag needed to sit up a little bit. When I modified my mag I took material off the top and bottom. It fits in the gun just does not pick up the rounds. |

View Quote We're using a steel cross pin as the "hooking" point for the magazine. We didn't wear any out in testing, but if we did, we could replace it. Far more useful than an aluminum nub in the magwell. It's odd that the P-Mags didn't work. They did for us in testing on multiple rifles. Tapco mags wouldn't work in any of our test AKs either, so we had pretty low expectations of them working in the LAR-47. W ehad both fit and feed issues that would have required more in time/cost to address than the mags sell for.. Steve/RRA |

I don't even have mine yet.
I'm doing the CAR A4, but going over to an A2 front sight housing, R4 handguard, and am going to switch the stock over to an Essential aluminum CAR stock (my preferred stock). Will run with an A2 carry handle for now (I personally don't like flip sights). Going to be odd for me as I have Redimags on just about everything else, so I'll have to figure out a different way to have an extra magazine on the rifle. Steve/RRA .. |

We are familiar with the bolt breakage issues on prior attempts at 7.62x39 ARs, and believe that we've taken the steps necessary to prevent that issue on the LAR-47 Thanks. New to this sight. I got a Lar-47 a few weeks ago. I've tried the PMAG Magpul magazines and not had any luck. My only other magazines ares the Thermolds. They work very well. I was able to take a doe with the gun yesterday. (sorry, no pics). I love the accuracy and dependability compared to another American made 7.62s39 carbine I have.
Any idea what could be going on with my gun and the Magpul's? I see where they have worked in at least a few others. Mine fail to load with any ammo. |

I don't know if something has changed on the Magpul side of things (mold revisions, etc...) but to date the only mags that we've found to be toal no-gos are th eUS Palm, Tapco, and drums. There are individual examples of every mag style tested, but those specific mags generally don't work in our "control group" AKs either. Thanks. Steve/RRA |

Just purchased 2 brand new P-mags and both do NOT work. The bolt gets hung up on the magazine (empty or full). I would take P-mags off the list and don't buy them unless you have something else to put them in. I'll hold on to these paper weights as I'm not mailing them back.

Can someone post a link or recommend a recently bought magazine that has been tested functional? I'm hoping that will fit into the community rules for posting as I would like to get some functional mags.

We're not experiencing that so we would like to know, in as much detail as you can provide, what the issue is so that we can resolve it (if it is the rifle). Photos if possible. we want to get to the bottom of it too. We've got at least eleven different types of AK mags that are working in both our test rifles and rifles that we're test firing before they ship. We also have polymer (including P-mags), Bakelite, and some sort of bimetallic mag that are also working fine. Thanks. Steve/RRA |

The bolt closes about half way across the ejection port. It gets tight as if it was binding. It can be "forced" using the forward assist, but it is tight. I felt comfortable doing that with a polymer mag. Definitely go and buy some new mags and try them out. I'm going to post some pictures here as soon as I can figure out how to do that.

I have a LAR47 and I have 2 pmags with 7/14 date stamp.
If I pull the charge handle all the way back, and let it go, the bolt closes. If I try to ease the bolt closed, it hangs up on the feed lips of the magpul mag. Until seeing the previous problem, I've never thought to try and slowly close the bolt. I'm going to the range tomorrow. I will field test my 2 pmags and see if the bolt drag is a problem or not for me. I'm tempted to just hit each lip with a file and take off a few thousands, but I feel trying them first would be more beneficial to other owners. I will try to report back tomorrow night... I'm just not sure when I will get home. |

Comparing the Thermold to the Pmags, I noticed the hang up is on the inside and top of the Pmag lips. This occurred on 3 separate Pmags. I decided to file them down to see if it would work, and they work beautifully. I filed mainly the inside of the lip and top. I took my time constantly measuring. It was easy to look into the chamber and see where they were hanging up. They now load the round smartly and still retain the ammo and feed with ease. 10 minutes for the 1st one and about 3 minutes for the other two had this taken care of.

Thought I would chime in. I just picked up an LAR-47 today. Gun store told me all AK mags including PMags should work fine. So I picked up a 30 rd PMag. I inserted the mag and charged the handle. The bolt would not close. It hung up on the empty inserted mag about half way across the top lip of the mag. I don't even need to range test it to know this mag is a no go. Anyone have advice on what mags to buy?

Win,
If you convert to a free float handguard with a top rail that is the same height as the receiver, the MBUS will be the correct height when mounted on that handguard. if keeping it the way it is, a flip sight fo rgas block height rails would work with a standard height rear sight. Steve/RRA |

[#47]
On the P-MAG front...
It appears that material was added to the outside/top of the feed lips(you can't add it inside the lips) to reinforce them. A few light passes with a file as described above was sufficient to remove the extra material to allow bolt carrier clearance. Steve/RRA |

i filed the hell out of that one tapco(sides and top)and made it work.i ruined another one trying to duplicate it though..lol...yes i used a bcm rail on mine....love it...love this gun....im gonna add a lantac dragon and do work!

[#49]
What front sight can be used on the lar47? flip up or non flip up.
Also would a free float rail work with the existing gas block? |
|
[#50]
I'm having mine built with an A2 front sight housing and am going to be the Guinea Pig for whether or not it will be "right" as is or might require a different height post.
Just about any front sight will work, but again, bear in mind that the ballistic paths of a 5.56 and a 7.62x39 are different, so adjustments will produce different results. Any CAR-length handguard could be used with your existing gas block (assuming you have the LAR-47 CAR A4). Some will require more work than others. Steve/RRA |
