I probably should also mention that I picked up an Armalite AR-10T detachable carry handle and detachable front sight to try on my latest RRA LAR-8A4. Since the LAR-8 receiver is a little over half an inch longer than the AR-10T one, if you mount the carry handle all the way back on the flattop receiver where it should be mounted, the front of the carry handle falls a little more than half an inch short of the front of the receiver (the flattop rail extends forward from the mounted carry handle). If you mount the carry handle forward one slot on the flattop, the rear doesn't look bad and only a little over an eighth of an inch of the rail extends forward of the carry handle. In this position, the handle doesn't look too bad. The front sight mounts easily on the gas block. Whether the height of these sights is usable or not is uncertain, and I plan to shoot this combination on Sunday to see. However, I'm guessing that they should work. I should also probably mention that the Armalite AR-10T detachable carry handle and front sight are about the blockiest units that I have ever seen, with absolutely no attempt to create any graceful contours or sculpt materials. If you like flat and square edged stuff, you'll love the Armalite units. Personally, I like a little more beauty, and I certainly hope that RRA takes that thought/preference into account when they finally release their LAR-8A4 detachable carry handle and detachable front sight... More when I have it... Forrest |

I was wondering about iron sight height. I thought it was discussed somewhere in the tread but could not find it. Will standard rail mounted irons let you zero at 50 yards.

Well, I took LAR-8A4 number 2 (20inch standard) out to the range today to check function and to see whether the Armalite AR-10T detachable carry handle and Armalite AR-10T detachable front sight would work ok on the LAR-8A4.
I only fired 50 rounds through the rifle, including 30 rounds of the reworked CBC 75 Ball mentioned above (again, remember that CBC 75 ammo is reported to have blown up several guns in this country, so make sure that what you have is safe to shoot before popping the cap on it), five rounds of Radway Green Ball (RG 93), five rounds of Portuguese Ball (FNM 92-12 L21A1) and ten rounds of reloads using LC74 cases, H335 powder, Norma N990 primers and Speer 170gr RN/FN bullets designed for the .30-30 Win. (with bullets not seated deeply to the cannelure). All 50 rounds chugged through the gun (mostly fired five rounds out of a magazine at a time), with even the RN .30-30 bullets feeding just fine. I used both the Israeli mag that came with this rifle and a Steyr StG-58 one, both 20 rounders... Since I was sighting the rifle in, I didn't keep track of exact group size, but I was very happy with the accuracy of the gun. The really good news is that the Armalite detachable sights worked really well. I started by moving the A2 rear sight up five clicks from bottomed out (like you would do with the M16/AR-15), and fired a couple of rounds (CBC 75) at a 50 yard target. I used a 6 o'clock hold (even though I sight my rifles in to point of aim) because I was wearing sunglasses as shooting glasses and it was a dark, overcast day, so that I was having trouble seeing the target well through the iron sights (using the small rear aperture). Since I had assumed that the rear sight was probably centered (left to right) from the factory, my first shots were to point of aim, elevation-wise, but about 4-5 inches to the right. It was quick business to adjust the windage. So, out of the box (rifle from RRA and sights from Armalite), the rifle was sighted in at 50 yards in only a couple of rounds. Next time, I'll drop the 50 yard group slightly to zero the rifle at 100 yards. So, while the Armalite AR-10T detachable carry handle and AR-10T detachable front sight might not be quite as svelte as I'd like, beauty is as beauty does... I'm quite happy... Forrest Edited to correct my memory after checking loading data. Although I originally said that the 170gr Speer RN/FN reloads used CCI200 primers (which is what I normally use), the rounds mentioned here, loaded 30AUG1976, used Norma N990 primers. I hate it when I misremember... |

Dear Forrest
In reply to your latest post about the armalite detachable carry handle and front sight, do you think it would work on a mid-length A4? Thanks in advance. James A. |

Assuming that the shorter barrel and slower muzzle velocity of the mid-length doesn't sling the bullet out considerably differently than the standard rifle, I don't see why it wouldn't work OK. Currently, my front sight is well down (flat of post lower than the surrounding flat of the sight). That means that I could lower the impact considerably by raising the front sight. The front sight came ajusted this way, and I just shot it. As I mentioned, I adjusted the rear sight up five clicks from the extyreme bottom before I first shot the rifle. This sight combination (low front sight and normal rear adjustment) was just right at 50 yards. To zero the sights at 100 yards, I'll have to raise the front sight just a tad from it's present setting. No problem there. Of course, the A2 rear sight was designed for the 5.56x45mm cartridge, so I'll have to play with adjustments for longer ranges (over 100 yards). If the shorter sighting radius of the mid-length leads to the gun shooting a little high, there should be plenty of adjustment in the front sight to zero the elevation. So, to make a long story longer, I'm guessing that the Armalite sights should zero ok on a mid-length too... But don't quote me... Have fun... Forrest |

Then again, of course, this discussion about using Armalite carry handles and detachable front sights on LAR-8A4 rifles would be moot if RRA just released these hummers for their own rifle.
Eh, Steve? Forrest |

Anyone know anything about the Crosman Centerpoint 3x9x42 scope. Or Crosman scopes in general.
Thanks, Jesse |

I like the Burris AR-332 but I'm worried that a 3x scope will not be a high enough power to hunt deer with.

Very brief range report. I am shooting the Tubbs Final Finish bullets through my 20" LAR-8. Loaded up the first 2 sets of 10 bullets. The bullets are 175 gr HPBT, so I used 40 gr. IMR 4064. For those who may not be familiar with the Tubbs FF, each set of 10 is embedded with an increasingly finer grit abrasive with the intent to fire lap the barrel. The final 10 bullets have a compound designed to burnish the barrel.
The first 20 rounds fired flawlessly thru the rifle. I shot the last 10 at 100 yds. Discounting 2 flyers, the remaining group of 8 shots was about 1.75 moa. Obviously one can do better by working up loads with appropriate bullets and powder, but the main thing is that the rifle functioned well. More, maybe next weekend. Bullseye_10x |

Thanks Dawg, so my October 08 and Jan 09 orders are probably a waaays out there. Looks like I'm likely in for a full year wait too. I better keep the $$$$$ stashed so I don't spend it on other toys. I enjoy the posts from those of you that have them already. Please keep posting your experience with the rifle and what accessories, and optics/sights you add.

Just placed the order for a 20" A4. Hope I don't regret it since I wanted the 16" originally. I figured a scope on a 16" might look odd.

Forrest By the way, I should probably mention that the serial number of the Varmint just received was a couple of hundred lower than the last standard 20 inch A4 that I received about a month ago. I have no idea what that means, but them's just the facts... Forrest |

Still waiting on my LAR8-A4 std. {Drums fingers on desk.}
Would like to see a FAQ or sticky started somewhere on this gun regarding various FAL mag experiences, and customizing parts, IE foreends, stocks, BUIS, etc that work on the flat top versions of this rifle. |

Hello, maybe youguys can help out. I ordered two (2) RRA LAR-8's back in December 2008. I thought maybe I could connect with my son who returned after his tours as a Marine in Iraq as an E-5 USMC. He's out now and starting to get back into civilian life.
So, I ordered a couple of RRA LAR-8's. I don't know anything about them, but he does. And I thought it would be a good connection for us. We could go out and shoot together. He doesn't know I ordered them, but I thought I would surprise him. Only, it has really taken along time for them to arrive. I orderded the A4 standards. Anyway, maybe you could suggest how they should be equipped. You know, what extra components should I search for to fix them up? I've already purchased a can ot rounds from georgia Arms. If your Dad surprised you with an RRA LAR-8, how would it be equipped to impress you? |

I ordered a LAR-8 A4 in March,2008.
I talked to the guys at the RRA booth at the Fall (October)2009 Knob Creek Machinegun Shoot. One said he was the general forman of the shop. He said there "waiting on barrels", and that his goal was to fill all backorders by the end of this year. I hope he reaches his goal!! In case your reading: My FFL is "Gungalaxy", and please remember the GREEN furniture! |

I spoke to the sales rep last week and he said he eas at the factory and they had a couple hundred LAR-8's on the bench ready to go but no Bolt Carrier Groups. He said that the hold up was at the supplier/contractor source.
Hopefully the rifles will start moving shortly |

Sorry it took so long to post photos, but, since I last posted I sold my mid LAR-8 to a friend with the option of getting it back, and bought a Kel-Tec RFB, its much smaller. I hope it works for me.

Nice collection of 7.62x51MM firepower!
I broke down and bought the RRA 20" A4 standard on Gun broker. I paid about $150 more than MSRP but I couldn't find one anywhere so I bit the bullet (no pun intended). It will be delivered to my FFL Dec 7, I can't wait!!!!! I also ordered 10 NIW metric mags, flip up sights, sling, see through weaver elevated mount and an ACOG to go on top of it. I'm going to go with an A1 length butt stock, a set of Cav Arms C5 (M4 type fatty hand guards) and a stubby FVG. Since I'm in MA I'm changing out the A2 FH for one of the POF muzzle breaks, to be compliant of coerce . I know the date is a bummer, it being Pearl Harbor day. Hopefully this will Chere me up a bit." Never forget". Here is a link to you tube with a short vid of the LAR-8. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hhqZ5bF6gVk&feature=fvw Another link to a very early AR10 promo. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5cJCc-Q4O8 Come on Dec 7th!!!! |

My FFL is a good friend of mine and I told him if ever gets one to call me. He also is more than likely one of the biggest dealers in our area. He got one in and called. I did'nt hesatate and picked it up ASAP.

Not too bad... I am looking forward to the real RRA sights, though... I'm also constantly checking the distributors for the KelTec RFB (as if I hadn't already been doing that...) Did your dealer mention which distibutor he got your RFB from...? Forrest |

Gents,
Couple of things from RRA. 1. They are, for the time being, discontinuing the Daniel Defense Rails. They have enough to do the standard orders in house, but the mid-lenght are S.O.L. 2. They will offer the upper halves, different rails, accessories, etc. here soon (January Catalog) and will be online for purchase shortly thereafter. Well, that is a 'couple.' Merry Christmas, 8654 |

Merry Christmas, 8654 Mr. 8654, may I ask how you got this info or what is your connection to Rock River? Somewhere in Rock River's pile of orders for the LAR-8 are unfulfilled orders for me through two different dealers. One from late 2008 and one from SHOT Show 2009. I would like to know what option choices I have coming up since I assume the rifles are not built yet. |

For anyone interested just order the Mid length DD Lite AR10 rail from Daniel defense and request the RRA barrel nut. They hooked me up with no problem.
