So I am 100% to 1911 building. I bought the carbon frame and 4140 slide along with the Ed Brown Drop-In kit. Bushing to barrel and bushing to slide fit is great. My question pertains to the barrel lugs. Specifically, it looks as if the first lug groove on the barrel only grabs about 0.02in of the first slide lug. To those that used this system, what did you do to allow for better lug fit?

The Ed Brown barrel should have a sheet of paper with fitting instructions. Use some sharpie marker and cover the whole upper barrel lug area, assemble the gun, and rack it a few times to see where it is hanging up. File small amounts at a time and repeat the process until the barrel lugs fully locks up into the slide. |

You bet - 150 rounds fired. No failures to fire, no failures to eject or stovepipes. So far I'm 100%. Sights were easy to adjust and the grips are a lot more comfortable than they look. For an approximate $650 1911, I couldn't be more pleased. For range shooting, I'm using cheap ball ammo at 230 grains and saving my good stuff for home protection and carry. The only thing different with this build compared to my other 1911's is that I need to use a barrel bushing wrench to field strip, but that's really no bid deal and I suspect things will loosen up eventually. Also, I'm using a simple 8 round ACT MAG. Smiles.

Anyone else having to do heavy fitting on the front sights to get them to fit the PSA novak cut? I pulled a Brazos lightning rod sight off my Springfield that was a good fit without and removing metal, but getting it into the PSA slide required removing a ton of metal.

OK - Here's how I did it.
Barrel - Colt Barrel Bushing - Colt Barrel Link - Colt Barrel Link Pin - Colt Disconnector - Wilson Combat Ejector - Swenson Ejector Pin - Swenson Extractor - Brownell's Firing Pin - Wilson Combat Firing Pin Spring - Wilson Combat Firing Pin Stop - Wilson Combat Grip Bushings - not sure - EBAY - sorry Grip Safety - Para USA Grip Screws - not sure - EBAY - sorry Grips - Custom Killer Grips Guide Rod - Colt Guide Rod Plug - Colt Hammer - Wilson Combat Hammer Link Pin - Wilson Combat Hammer Pin - Wilson Combat Hammer Strut - Wilson Combat Magazine Catch Lock - Wilson Combat Magazine Catch Spring - Wilson Combat Magazine Catch/Release - Wilson Combat Mainspring - Fusion Mainspring Cap - Fusion Mainspring Cap Pin - Fusion Mainspring Housing - Fusion Mainspring Housing Pin - Fusion Mainspring Plunger Detent - Fusion Plunger Spring - Fusion Plunger Tube - Fusion Recoil Spring - Colt Sear - Wilson Combat Sear Pin - Wilson Combat Sear Spring - Wilson Combat Slide Stop - Fusion Thumb Safety - Fusion Trigger - Wilson Combat Let me add - sights - Kensight adjustable Novak lowmounts Also - when staking your plunger tube, be sure to put something in it first like a drill bit. I smashed my first one and my punger spring set up would no longer fit. I had to remove my plunger tube by squeezing it in a vice and using rubber mallet to bang off my frame. That crap about putting a wire through it and pulling with pliers doesn't work. Good Luck! |

I ordered the Springfield Armory adjustable rear sight that someone else had recommended earlier in the thread. It fits like a glove.
http://www.midwayusa.com/product/721189/springfield-armory-adjustable-rear-sight-1911-novak-cut-steel-blue I also ordered the Kensight front sight, contoured, fiber optic. It also fits great. It will need a little blue loctight though, as the rollpin hole in it and the one in the slide are just slightly off center of each other. Not sure which is not correct though. I went with a .190" height because I had read reviews on the SA rear that a .180" didn't give much down adjustment. For a hundreth of an inch I figured it wasn't that big of a deal. http://www.midwayusa.com/product/862720/kensight-competition-front-sight-1911-novak-cut-contoured-base-118-width-steel-black-serrated-blade-with-fiber-optic Pics tomorrow once I get the front installed properly. |

Thanks. I would like to share a few things I learned so far during this project...
1) Under the factory blasted finish on the PSA frame and slide are heavy machining marks that take forever to get rid of by hand (I was worried a dremel might remove too much metal) 2) DO NOT use the Wilson Combat 298SBP beaver tail with the PSA frame... Even with the Wilson combat 402 jig.. the lines on the beaver tail don't match the frame. The safety will work and feels very good after alot of manipulation. Maybe I just screwed up... I don't know... just sharing my experience. 3) I used the Wilson Combat 399S, 70 firing pin stop on my PSA slide and it was loose as crap and had to replace it with the Ed Brown. The Ed Brown worked perfect. I don't know if I had a defective product from Wilson or what. Hope this can help someone out... wish I knew it when I started I'll post some pictures when I finish the build |

At least started with. Taking a frame already cut for a .250" radius and then re-cutting it to a Wilson/Clark cut is generally only done if you have to. It could probably be blended to match better, if it is not lacking material, which it may be looking at the gaps. You cannot cut a Wilson/Clark cut down further to a .220" radius cut so you could be stuck unless you weld it up or live with it. (a Wilson/Clark cut is a .223" radius that has been offset down and in, so no material to re-cut to a .220") Wilson/Clark Cut |

[#31]
This was my first 1911 build so I guess I had to learn that the hard way. I'm not going to stress it now... just going to blend the top and not leave the the bottom and side as is. I decided to cut my losses and chalk it up as a lesson learned. I might can make it look better, but I know i can make it look a lot worse. Sometimes the enemy of good is better. I looked for a few hours on the internet and ask several people about converting that .250 to a Wilson and I could not find anything(not to say its not there).. Oh well maybe this will help someone else.

Three pistols, one target. All fired offhand. Most at 10-11 yards, but a few in each at varying distances to 25 yards. Roughly checked group size with the first magazine in each pistol. It was acceptable and I didn't bother to record the individual groups. I knew the all stainless would print very low, as I installed a very tall front sight. Aiming point for the SS was the upper blue dot, which had it impacting with the other tow. Will file for POI, or leave it to use with the suppressor. All shots except seven in each pistol (see below) are with my cast 200g SWC, WIN231, mixed brass and mixed primers. At the end I fired one magazine of my carry ammo through each. Winchester 'Personal Protection' 230gr JHP. Hadn't shot those in a couple of years. A LOT snappier in the recoil department than my pussycat handloads!  So why did I picture the the third pistol and the magazine? Failures to feed...... Started with duotone and the magazine. Three FTF in the first magazine. The the SS with the same magazine. Two FTF in the first magazine. They a few more magazines in each without any hiccups. Then it happened again. WTF? :? It was easy to identify the magazine as it is one that I use for IDPA and had a rubber baseplate glued to the bottom. It has never been a problem in my IDPA/carry gun. Since I had that gun on my belt, loaded up the magazine with the 200g SWCs and attempted to put them downrange. Three FTF and a slide locked back with two rounds still in the mag. Put that mag aside and put another 20-30 round through all three pistols. Not a single FTF.... Not enough rounds to be definitive, but reassuring. This target is not representative of accuracy for several reasons. 1) No attempt made for group size. 2) Most was rapid fire. 3) Three different guns. 4) For several magazines, I was aiming then lifting my head to watch where the brass landed to check if extractors needed any tuning. SS throws it a bit higher, but all landed as I like. Between 3-5 o'clock, 3-8' distant. 5) I had different spring rates in all three pistols to see which had the best recovery from recoil. (That was why so much rapid fire.) http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc120/Marksman60/1911%20Projects/Palmetto%20State%20Builds/20150806_133321_zpsaokykeum.jpg .................................
