Hello guys. I've got a gen 1 upper and lower. I put a trigger and hammer in it, and its been sitting in the safe for a couple years now. I plan on using PSA parts. Have the bugs been worked out? Are there signifigant issues with the gen 1 receivers that will give me troubles?
Thanks in advance... |

Anyone know if a Noveske N6 barrel and KAC URX 3.1 SR25 handguard will fit on a PA-10 receiver? Thanks!

I just got the 9mm Colt style pistol lower, sku#7790494.
About 110 rounds of Wolf and Win. Whit box through it with no issues. Very pleased. Does that pistol lower come with a carbine spring? Seems like I saw some post that said it came with a .308 spring. Thanks. ETA: Sorry just realized that I posted this in the PA10 thread. Good grief! |

Take out your buffer and spring, put a quarter in the RE and reassemble. Re measure. Keep repeating until you are between 1/8" and 3/16" (yes.. you need it between that 1/16" range). Otherwise, you wind up with what you have (buffer bottoming out, which it should, but then the bumper compressing enough that the BCG rails contact the lower. And yes, that's not good for the lower). This is why I don't recommend PSA complete 308's. They seriously don't know what they're doing. The receiver sets (and many other parts) are GREAT, but they don't have a grasp of the difference between 308 and 5.56 set ups and WHY they need to be different. They overgass the heck out of their 308's, don't properly "time" the BCG, and use too long (and strong) of a buffer spring to compensate for their lack of understanding of these. IMHO, an adjustable gas block is a MUST with 308 (take spring/buffer weight issues out of the equation), followed by proper "timing" of the BCG. They don't understand either, which is why they continue to have tons of issues with their 308 rifles. The funny part is, despite their incompetence, their receiver sets are spot on and make FANTASTIC builds. In both of my builds, I'll give you the cliff notes: Gen 1 and Gen 2 receiver build sets: Used Faxon pencil profile (16" midlength gas) for both. PA- 10 BCG's for both (however, BOTH needed an O-ring removed. Do NOT run double O-rings in the ejector or you WILL have issues with lock up. PSA has been ridiculed for this before, but since they don't understand, continue to put them in. Remove one... or both. I posted a thread about this, but they quickly deleted it.). SLR adjustable gas blocks (or any adjustable gas block). I like SLR because they are "click" adjustable and never lose their setting. Mine run with surplus/Fed at 5 clicks out. Yours will vary depending on gas port, tube length, recoil spring/buffer set up, etc. Mil spec receiver extensions with Gun-Tec 308 carbine (shorty) buffer and spring (AIM has them). Still needed ONE quarter behind each spring/buffer to "time" correctly to not impact receiver and have the proper 1/8-3/16" range between bolt face and catch. PSA does great DPMS spec receivers. Unfortunately, they have no idea how they work (and their complete rifles show this). |

Although , I am very comfortable with dimpled GB's as well.... just don't torque the set screws like a Gorilla... Follow the manufacturers Torque figures. None of the SLR Adj. GB's have budged. I also never mount the Adj. GB up against a shoulder or such on the barrel... for a few different reasons. And with the SLR dimpling jig, the GB hole is centered over the barrels gas port. Pushing it right up next to the shoulder on the barrel is bad. Remember there needs to be a gap available if you were using a FSB and the gizmo for holding the handguards in place. I would like to remind everyone... the clamp-ons are slightly larger... so be sure to check the clearance around the FF tube / handguard... to tight and you run the risk of your Adj. GB bonking the handguard, from barrel whip. Even those fat "bullish" barrels will whip, abeit much less... but they still try. so allow reasonable clearance around the Adj. GB. If some one was heck bent on using a specific handguard with tight clearance around the GB... I would suggest considering leaving the GB exposed.... watch a couple of Youtube videos concerning barrel whip in AR's , and AK's.. etc ... always surprising. I have mentioned before about Watching the Criterion Videos on Accurizing an AR15.. I suggest it again, all of their suggestions add up. I love the "don't let the ejection port dust cover retaining pin impose any force when pushing on your barrel nut... stuff like that does add up... it reminds me of the tricks involved in making a M1A / M1 accurate. Lol... sometimes looser is better, and has its place. |

They really do both work well provided you dimple the barrel ( IMHO,.. and since that will spread the "load" from the screw tip over a larger surface rather then just the pointy tip ) .. and so, for me... it really comes down to how much clearance / room I have.

I have 2 of the GEN 1 rifles. (18" barrels)
They were the kits that only need the lower receiver. Put them together, put them in the safe, There they sit. Never fired, never loaded. ( People were having too many problems with them ) I have questions on the stock. One: putting a full stock on it , what correct parts do I need? The other: I don't know if it came with the correct buffer tube, spring and buffer. I have a 20" upper I have been working on for many years (GEN 1) So I dug it out and ordered a complete GEN2 lower to put the 20" on a few days ago. Not in a hurry! I will figure it all out later. Keep the questions and answers coming. Thanks Ron |
|
|
Got my upper and lower together today and did a quick function test. Ran fine but one issue. The bolt does not go back far enough to lock back on the bolt face. Even pulling with the charging handle it does not go back. Like the buffer tube is too short. It catches on the bolt carrier and when mag inserted you have to pull the charging handle back to chamber the round. Been shooting ARs including large frames for years and my others don't do this. Anyone have any ideas? I dropped PSA rep an IM here so hope to hear back.

His buffer tube is longer, close to 8" with the typical 3.25" carbine buffer. I'm gonna do some looking in to his BCG timing that is mentioned on this page. I believe his came with an adjustable gas block. Edit to add, his buffer tube is 7 3/4" internal depth. Buffer appears to be lighter than an h2 buffer, but will weigh tomorrow. There was +5/16" gap between bolt face and mag catch. Added two quarters, still pushing 3/16". |
|

So this is confusing to me. PSA is selling these lowers with incorrect buffer tubes, springs and buffers? Or are these custom setups?
I have a 18” PA10 complete upper on the way and will be ordering a PA10 complete lower with A2 fixed stock. Both are GenII. Will I have the same issue? I will not be using a suppressor. |
