I've always been a fan of PSA stuff... I like the idea of good prices for good products. In this short piece, I'll discuss my (attempted) build on the PA-10 upper and lower, and why PSA's reputation will be taking a substantial hit with quite a few people who attempt builds on this receiver set.
I was able to purchase an upper, but they were sold out of lowers at the time, leaving that as a later purchase. My first impression of my new PA-10 lower was "milspec". Finish is identical to the standard AR-15 lowers I regularly build on. Appearance is that of an up-sized AR-15 lower. In my opinion, sharper-looking than a lot of the more common slab-sided .308 receivers. Definitely slimmer than most, and leads me to believe it will build into a lighter-weight gun. It looked like a good base for a working gun. When I purchased my PA-10 lower, there were no uppers available. There were also no build kits and the only source of information on which parts to use were PSA employees. Since I already had a substantial number of AR lower parts, I ordered only the parts employees told me would fit that were not AR standard. This included (initially) the front pivot pin, buffer and buffer spring, DPMS bolt carrier group, DPMS dust cover assembly, and DPMS bolt catch. While waiting for these parts to come in from Midway and Brownell's, I was able to obtain a PA-10 stripped upper. On assembling the lower, I found several issues with the instructions I had been given by PSA. In fact, the rear takedown pin was not AR standard. DPMS pivot and takedown pins are the correct diameter, but both pins are too long to fit. Additionally, the head of the pivot pin has a flat identical to a standard AR. Needless to say, the pins are proprietary. The DPMS bolt catch does NOT fit the receiver set. Again, apparently a proprietary part. The standard AR trigger group and buffer tube fit perfectly. It is important to note that use of AR-10 tubes or standard AR-15 tubes require buffers and springs. The PA-10 upper provided its own issues. The DPMS dust cover fit perfectly. The AR-15 forward assist assembly went in and functioned smoothly. The issues? The DPMS bolt carrier group works with a DPMS-style forward assist. The forward assist on the PA-10 is decidedly NOT a DPMS style. On top of that, fit between the PA-10 upper and lower can only be described as "shake, rattle, and roll" at best. Substantial play between the upper and lower is present. I'm still waiting for my barrel and rail to come in, but I don't see any issues on installation. The biggest issues with the PA-10 receiver set is the complete lack of information on assembly provided to customers and PSA employees both. Whatever moron decided to release the receivers without either a build sheet (list of parts that fit/ don't fit) or individual parts for sale should at the very least be demoted to stockboy. Incorrect information provided by PSA has cost me a couple hundred dollars in parts I cannot use. While PSA is releasing lower build kits, they are not releasing individual parts at this time. Since I already have most of the parts, it is lunacy for me to pay $149.00 for two pins and a bolt catch. Until PSA gets on the ball, PA-10 receivers belong in the store, not the build bench. NOTE: As of today, I am STILL unable to get anyone from website customer service, Fernandina Rd, or Farrow Rd to give me a straight answer about what parts actually fits these receivers. |

In for PSA reply!
Myself and a friend almost pulled the trigger on these. He wants to build a 7mm/08 and I want a 260. I will wait till the bugs are worked out. OP thanks for being the lab rat. AL |

Thank you for your comments. The build kits were released within a few days of the lowers. We apologize for the delay.
The following items differ Between the AR15 and the PA10 lower receiver build kits: Front and rear take down pins (longer) The bolt catch (larger) The Mag catch The carbine buffer tube (longer) Carbine and rifle buffers (shorter) We do not have the items above available separately at this time. The lower build kit provides all of the items needed at a reasonable price, and takes the guesswork out of the build. They will be available as supplies permit. As was mentioned, a DPMS BCG will function in our upper. However, if the BCG does not have forward assist serrations, the FA function of the upper will not work. |

I ordered both My AR10 lower and Lower build kit from PSA on the day of release, at 9am.
Oddly enough, i picked up the lower parts kit, and a buffer tube for my ar already.. I had not picked up my lower for that build that i ordered the same day as it was not ready. it took them 3 days to get me the lpk and tube. While in store at farrow, I bought a second pa10 lower and upper. My experience is different from yours. the LBK assembled into the Lower without issue at all. the fit and finish to the upper and lower were 100% perfect, without shake, shimmy or rattle. they mate up securely, and it looks beautiful. again this is using the Lower Build kit, and a PA10- (serialed in the 400's) and a PA10 upper receiver that i picked up in the store while waiting for my first PA10 lower. (FARROW ROAD EMPLOYEES if you see this call me and lemme know if its in :) ) I have not attempted to build the upper yet.. as im not in any hurry. I have however bought 2 mags for the lower, one 10 round and one 20 round Pmag. both fit without issue perfectly. I cant but help to wonder if your rattle is due to not using their LBK hope that ive helped some in regards to the review of their LBK. (i especially like the touch of the Engraving on the Tube. ) |

I have long awaited these receivers, but this is exactly why I have waited to build one. agreed with both above, however in psa's defense i think it will take some time to figure out what all works. just look at the mega maten thread in ar variants i think it is up to like 75 pages of what fits and what doesn't fit. our community has ridden psa to release these, and i think they did to soon. i am glad they released them when they did, but had we been willing to wait a couple more months maybe it would have went smoother. psa any ideas on a barrel 16"-20" first than maybe a shorter "pistol" barrel? i am in to see the youtube videos of someone shooting one of these with a 7.5" barrel and sig pistol brace |

View Quote The PA10 uppers and lowers are made from 7075 forgings, in much the same way as an AR15, only larger. As such, the upper and lowers are going to be subject to the same machining tolerances and stacking issues. The forgings were desired over the billet for many reasons, among them strength and weight. In the AR15 style modular platform, the play between the upper and lower is purely cosmetic and does not affect accuracy. Anyone who has handled a service rifle will attest to the "mil-spec" fit. The recipe for building a custom, tight fitting upper and lower has always been to hand match the parts together until you get pieces whose tolerances complement. This requires going through uppers to find one that suits your preferences. |

My serial number is lower than yours, but not low enought to have the tool marks on the inside of the trigger guard. From what I'm reading, the buffer tube assembly is an Armalite style (same buffer as AR-15 and with a longer tube). Individual parts still need to be released. Edit: There's no need for me to buy a LPK when I'm using an SSA-E. Same with some of the other parts. As I said, $149.00 for a couple pins and bolt catch isn't reasonable. |

My LBK was ordered online the friday that they came out. I then picked it up at farrow. I hope my first ordered .308 lower is lower number than the one i got in store. you are correct ibeleive on the buffer tube. and i agree totally about the individual parts needing released. As do barrels, and BCG's. A PSA SQR handguard for the .308 would be nice as well. |

My LBK came a week before the lower. |

It looks great Game. Have you decided on a barrel? Or waiting on PSA to release some CHF barrels?
Making me want one. |

I have the same issues with the upper and lower fit on mine. Since I bought this to just be a utility carbine build, Ill try an accuwedge and see if that takes some rattle out.
Mine went together well with the PSA lower build kit, although I would have liked to see a threaded DPMS type pin for the bolt catch instead of a roll pin. At this price point I can live with it. I do wish the first release would have been with the upper and lower combo as an option. I bought the first set as separate pieces, because that's how they were offered. A couple of days later they offered the sets at a discount over the separate pieces, so I had to buy another set to bring my average cost down . +1 on a CHF CL barrel. I think I'll wait a while to see if it happens. A 16" barrel set up for handguards (mid-length) would be just the ticket. |

I am still undecided on the barrel. the mega barrels have been callign my name.. im a bit of a psa purist.. so if i can get a PSA barrel i will. I am not in any hurry to finish the build so waiting on PSA to release things is fine.. gives me time to save.. and you know.. black friday is on its way :) Do it! you'll love it. Quoted:

So are we talking Gen 1 DPMS parts or G2?
I'm curious b/c I was thinking of picking up a second complete upper in the future and I want to know if PSA will fit my Gen 1 lower...? And I am disappoint not to see any complete rifles for sale this weekend... |

Can anyone confirm if the Armalite AR10 lpk can fit the PA10 lower? Are the take down pins and bolt catch same as the parts from a typical dpms pattern AR10? And i assume the rifle length mill spec buffer tube will fit the PA10 lower.

I am building it when I get home from work. Is there anything different than building an AR15 lower? It all looks the same with some larger components. Did you run into any issues when assembling it? |

No she went together without a single hitch. everything was identical to the ar lower, just a bit different shaped parts. (some bigger / longer) other than that, using the PSA kit, it was smooth as butter. |

Drop in handguards, that use a delta ring, yes. Rails that require the barrel nut to be replaced, no. The barrel nut and rail height for a 308 is different. View Quote Considering the barrel nut has different dimensions I assume a Troy alpha rail that slides over the AR15 barrel nut would not work? I am looking to build a rifle style LR-308 with a free float tube and rifle stock. It sounds like I can use an AR15 rifle stock and buffer tube with a .308 rifle buffer? |

From what I've been told, its DPMS Gen 1 compatibility upper to lower.
Proprietary parts are bolt release, pins, buffer and buffer tube, but MAG release was not mentioned. More details on that? I've also been told they will NOT part out the individual proprietary parts (which are out of stock anyways). The buffer tube is reportedly mil-spec diameter, but the agent I communicated with suggests that they have no idea about parts compatibility with things like rifle length stock sets (or anything else). Honestly, part of the major draw for the AR platforms is parts interchangeability and such. To not have any idea what's compatible seems rather stupid to me, but hey, it's not my business. There's at least one person who got one of the complete uppers and has discovered that he cannot rack the charging handle; the BCG gets stuck in the buffer tube of his DPMS lower for some reason. I'll be curious to find out more about compatibility. I'm working on a build of my own with the PSA receivers, although I still need to buy the upper. |

Thank you for your comments.
While there are a couple of proprietary parts, we offered LPKs and LBKs at very reasonable prices to make it easier to build up complete lowers without issues. When we have stock available, we will offer the pivot and take down pins. However, because of their cost they will be far more economical to purchase in the kits. We tested the uppers and lowers with Gen 1 DPMS "low" pattern 308 ARs, and designed them to be able to interchange whole upper and lower assemblies. Fit was normal for AR platform rifles. We also tested a number of aftermarket triggers, including Giessele SSA, and National Match, triggers, and they worked fine. The SSA-E seems to be a little different, we are evaluating the issue now. |

Well, that's disconcerting, as I have an SSA-E trigger on the way to me for my PSA lower. More details on that? What issues are there with standard mag releases?

It's getting harder and harder to be a PSA fan... |

A buddy of mine was emailing back and forth with PSA regarding parts compatibility with their new .308 line. Here was the PSA response:
Our Lower Receiver is compatible with DPMS and CMMG Upper Receivers. The Rail height we use for our PA-10 Upper is 1.259in. The Thread Pitch for the barrel nut is 1.4375-16 UN-2A. We in customer service are not sure about which after market hand guards will fit. As long as they meet the rail height, and thread pitch above they should work. Below is a list of PA-10 specific parts. - Take Down and Pivot Pins (Longer than other vendors) - PA-10 Bolt Catch (Stronger than AR-15) - PA-10 Mag Catch Stronger than AR-15) If using our Buffer tube: - Our PA-10 Buffer Tube is Mil-Spec in diameter, but a little longer in length. We use our PA-10 Buffer Spring, and a Carbine Buffer. Fire Control Group The PA-10 uses a Mil-Spec Fire Control Group. We know that the Geissele ACT and QMS Fire Control Group function properly in our lower receiver. (They are Mil-Spec Fire Control Groups) BCG Our PA-10 BCG has Forward Assist serrations manufactured into it. A DPMS BCG will work, but the Forward Assist on our Upper will be rendered usless, because the DPMS BCG does not have the serrations. With all of this said, we do recommend that customers use our parts to assemble a PA-10 Rifle to ensure that it will function properly. If you have any other questions feel free to email me. Can anyone confirm if the Armalite AR10 lpk can fit the PA10 lower? Are the take down pins and bolt catch same as the parts from a typical dpms pattern AR10? And i assume the rifle length mill spec buffer tube will fit the PA10 lower. View Quote I ran into the takedown pin and bolt catch issue trying to assemble my lower today. I ordered the Armalite parts out of curiosity as to whether they will fit. Like another user, I don't want to pay over $80 for three parts. I'll post the results when the parts arrive. Edit: Just saw the proprietary parts released individually on the PSA website. You can now see a better pic of the parts (the LPK pics were too small). If the takedown pin, pivot pin, and bolt catch aren't Armalite pattern, I'll eat my hat. Actually a little relieved, I don't have any issue with a mix of DPMS and Armalite profiles, I just want to know which parts work. I really didn't like the idea of yet another proprietary profile adding to the already confusing issue of AR10 compatibility. I'll still post when I test Armalite parts after they arrive to confirm 100%. |

So I am correct in understanding that a A2 AR-15 stock can be used with the PSA tube? As I am a fan of the A2 stock on 18-20" barreled AR style rifles. Don't really care for the M4 style sliding stocks and 16" and shorter carbines.
