Is there any significance to the roll mark? I always wondered why Colt named the 6520 the "Government Carbine." I wouldn't think that Colt would give it this name just designate it for law enforcement/government agencies but I could be dead wrong. Do any of the Colt experts have any insight?

View Quote That designation was given to the rifle after the Clinton ban in 1994. The carbine was intended for LE sales due to it's features, flash hider, bayonet lug and telescoping stock. The rifle wasn't intended for civilian sales, but when the AWB of 94 expired in 04 Colt didn't have any restrictions on selling them to non government or LE agencies. They ran with that nomenclature up until a few years ago I believe. I think the marking has a "cool" factor and try to buy them whenever I can, some people don't care it's pretty much a novelty marking now days. Hope that sort of answers the question, If I'm wrong there will be someone on here to tune me up on this. |

Thanks fellas. I have a 6520 that I purchased a few years ago and it is by far my favorite black rifle.
Common sense suggested that it had something to do with the 94' AWB but I wasn't 100% positive so I figured you guys would know. |

The first AR-15A2 Gov't Carbine model R6520 which was a commercial pre ban model was first released in 1988 and production ended in 1990.
This Gov't model carbine replaced the previous model R6420 A2 Sporter II carbine (mfg from 1985 to 1987) which I had bought new and my first Colt carbine in '85. In '88 when the Gov't carbine was released, the model R6550 marked "Gov't Model" rifle was also introduced to replace the older model R6500 AR-15A2 Sporter II rifle. During around late 1990 to early '91 the Gov't carbine model was replaced by the model R6530 Lightweight carbine with no bayonet lug and the early production had short CS A1 length A2 style fixed buttstocks, later had the standard long A2 buttstocks, I also had this model new in '91 with short buttstock, I never had the R6520 Gov't model carbine. In the assault weapons ban period the LE version of the 6520 was produced with the "L" serial number prefix added, also the R6530 Lightweight carbine was replaced with the Match Target MT6530 without flash suppressors. |

View Quote I'm not certain what was the factory's reason they named that series of rifles and carbines Government models, my best guess is marketing and also it is their closest configuration with the M-16A2 select fire military models, sort of their A2 clone. The previous model series of the Gov't models was the A2 Sporter II rifles and carbines which have a mixture of A1 and A2 features. Then after the 1989 import ban Colt changed the model names again by removing the AR-15 and Gov't roll markings, replaced them with Sporter names (Lightweight, Target, HBAR, Competition HBAR, etc). Those Gov't series marked rifles and carbines are among the desirable pre ban models to collectors. |

What is so special about the colt/diemaco 6520s? I've noticed people have a thing for them. Collectors item?

[#26]
I purchased several Govt Cars (we called them shorties) in the summer of 1994 before the Clinton ban. I believe the order of production was the sp1 car; spotted II car, colts carbine, then Govt Car. Shortly after the 89import ban, starting in the early 90's colt decided to be PC and can out with the bluelable guns with no bayo lug and fixed stocks. About the same time Colt renamed the colt carbine the Govt Car and only made available (alledgely) to law enforcement. However many distributors were able to get them and sold them to dealers who in tern sold to the public. You were the shit in the day if you had or got the opportunity to buy. Sometimes you could get lucky and find one at a gun show. During the ban the continued to produce LEOrestricted Govt Cars and the blue liable guns to law enforcement. The blue labe guns kept their roll marks but at - 15 was added and a bayo lug. So that's how have police trade ins roll marked "colt ar15 match bar" with Leo stampings. Colt played the name game and cosmetic game to be PC before the ban. During the ban they produce the match target series - ban compliant. After the ban, no more PC - build em and sell the as fast as you can. That's how I recall it. Sincerely a rabid colt ar15 collector.

Any colt Canada marked barrels and receivers are more rare because the importation of "military" receivers and barrels are banned. So the only way they get in the country is through LEO Govt' sales only. This why Steyr can no longer import the Austrian made 9mm kits.

Story I got was Colt shifted some Canadian lowers down south from Dimeco/ Colt Canada for LE sales to help boost production numbers during the panics. I seem to remember some guys having D marked bolts too, not sure what all they pulled to help production. Had to be for sales as there was something about import laws but someone can correct me on that if wrong. I'm not really a collector so much as it's just a variation I'd like to have. I'd shoot it like any other gun. |

The serial number is LCG021xxx. Not sure what that translates to for year of mfg. Trying to do some research to see where these rifles may have come from. Either way, I'm pleased with the deal... Pop the hand guards off and check the barrel for a date near the front sight base. It should give you an approximate production date plus or minus. My ban-era LE R6700 (Competition HBAR) barrel isdated 10/97 as shown below. http://www.narruc.net/Public/pix/hbar/c-hbar.jpg http://www.narruc.net/Public/pix/hbar/date.jpg I'll check it out when I get home from work today. Snapped these this morning. Not in bad shape at all for a 10+ year old rifle. It definitely spent most of its life in the rack of a vehicle. There was green felt (which lines most vehicle weapons racks) under the handguards. A few scratches here and there but the bolt has almost no wear at all. The ugly scar on the carry handle will get covered up with some aluma-black and left at that. |

Picked it up today. Other than the carry handle wear it looks great. I'm guessing it's a mid to late 90's rifle. Half circle AR bolt carrier, H buffer, and a rack number of FLT109. The serial number is LCG021xxx. Not sure what that translates to for year of mfg. Trying to do some research to see where these rifles may have come from. Either way, I'm pleased with the deal... Did you order it online? Thx Yes....Gunbroker. Their BIN price for this one was $620. The one that sold before this was $640 and didn't have as bad of wear on the carry handle, but I missed it while "checking with the wife".... |

I think it's 12/00 date if I remember right. Maybe 01. |

I picked up one as well. It has the rack number followed by "Patrol" on the stock. It also came with an ambi sling loop instead of the standard end plate, and both front and rear night sights.

Well bought at that price and a heckuva bonus if the CAR stocks were on them.

1/N stock and 6 hole handguards included. Those were the added bonus. The sum of the parts is worth more than I paid for the rifle. As for the date....no stamp on the barrel but 00-01 sounds like a good guestimate to me. Shot it with irons in a match this weekend and did surprisingly well at the 500m line...

Brownells has new Colt ones listed now and again. The downside is they are stripped, and $250.

Saw that. I'd have to find someone to mill the M4 feed ramps into it (to be correct anyways). It would still function without them. I'll probably leave it as is. It shoots fine and if I make it too nice I'll be afraid to beat on it.

Glad I bought up all the free world's supply of LE 6520s back when they were cheap. Got my first back in Sept. 2007 at the Harmarville Pa. gun show. Whadda sweetie.....so yunz can unnerstand my obsession with this piece. I've bashed this little lady just a bit lately with a MIAD grip, A MOE FBC stock and a Diamond Head super lite/ skinny rail HG. She's sooooo badd, you want to throw her over your shoulder and go out and conquer half the world! Huzzah !
