The latest incarnation of my issued M4 in "Augee's Quest to Divide by Zero and Make the Best General Purpose Carbine Ever (for his personal use)"
The basic idea being a weapon based on the M4 Carbine, with minimal functional changes that allows me to seize, hold and own ground from 0-500m day or night and manage (not just fight) a fight. Jack of all trades, master of none, some might say, but IMHO, the best solution for *my* problems (possibly not yours).
Mostly a bare bones RO920, owned by us all, with a couple of little tweaks.
I did pick up the ELCAN, though not without some trepidation, given the price and it's spotty reputation amongst some whom I otherwise consider to be pretty reliable sources. However, the specs looked too good to pass up, and I know that it has been product improved since those end-users developed their initial impressions, so I was willing to give it a try, with the caveat that my trusty TA01NSN/TRD is sitting waiting in the wings for its slightly more northern competitor to show its flaws. Unfortunately for the ACOG, though, in the short time I've been training with the ELCAN, I've yet to have any problems what so ever with it, despite the fact that's taken more than it's fair share of abuse in a training environment.
I'll say this, if it holds up and doesn't give me any reason to change my mind over the coming months, I may be picking up at least another, despite the not insignificant cost of entry. It does everything an Aimpoint can and everything the ACOG does (albeit with a slightly, though nevertheless noticeably smaller field of view in 4x) and still has additional features to recommend it over both. If you come from a mechanized background (tanks, Bradleys), it's very intuitive as well, as the throw lever switch from high power to low power allows you to use scanning and target acquisition techniques similar to those used in the gunner's station.
In all honesty, the CTR was added more as a vanity than anything else... I've never really had a problem with stock wobble on the standard M4 stock, nor with the LMT SOPMOD, and I've used all three on the rifle, and haven't settled on which one works best for me just yet. That being said, the increased eye relief of the ELCAN makes the length of the LMT stock a little more manageable than when using the 4x32 ACOG, it's still bulky when fully kitted up, though.
