I ran a box of the Winchester white box ammo through her today... Lead tipped and hollow point. It was fairly consistent but far from accurate in my opinion but even though it was fairly consistant the amount of FTEs will keep me from ever trying it again...
I also tried some Remington Gold Tipped hp and it seemed even less consistent and probably equal/similar regarding the number of FTEs. The rounds that were errant were further from center than the Winchester white box ammo. We then tried the Federal bulk pack in the red box. Copper tip, hp, 36 grain. It had no FTEs but still not very consistent on paper... Lastly I tried some Federal lead tipped round nose match grade 40 grain ammo in the light tan box. I only got to shoot about 100 rounds of this but it seemed to be more consistant although still not what I would call accurate, not even at 25 yards through a scope... Every once in a while I would get a very solid group of 5 rounds but then it would shoot kind of erratic... The errant rounds would seem to float further away than even the W/B ammo... In summary, I will never buy the Winchester white box ammo again, lol. The Remington Gold tipped works great in my pistols but for some reason doesn't work so well in the ST-22. The Federal bulk pack in the red box cycles well, zero FTEs, but was not as accurate as I had hoped. Definitely not like some pics others have posted where they can cover 5 rounds with a nickel... Lastly the Federal lead tipped "Target Grade Performance" ammo also had zero FTEs but was still not as accurate as I had hoped... I cleaned her up and plan to head back to the range tomorrow to shoot some more of the "Target Grade Performance" Federal ammo. The match Federal ammo that folks says works good with these, it is copper or lead tipped? |

I would like to give a litte update. While we have been using the Federal bulk ammo for some time now its getting worse and worse. Everytime I get another case its worse and worse. Its weak and underpowered and VARY Inconsistant. Im tired of having a perfectly fine rifle not function properly due to ammo related problem. Ive been testing with ALOT of CCI Mini Mags and its alot better stuff. It is more powerfull and MUCH more consistant. We might end up test firing and recommending CCI Mini Mags with our products from here on out.

I was amazed at how clean they shoot, as in very little gun powder residue... They also shoot some pretty consistant groups. I was putting 25 rounds inside a quarter size group at 25 yards (the longest at my local indoor range) with a red dot. It is not a very strong ammo so I was getting lots of FTEs. I tried the Federal GameShock ammo again and it was pretty consistant as well as almost no FTEs. I then tried the CCI mini mags again and they ran flawlessly as far as zero FTEs. It is just the $8 a box for the CCI and $7 a box for the GameShock that keeps me looking for cheaper stuff. I went to a new store to see what they had for ammo and I ran into the black box Winchester Dynapoint GT ammo. I am going to go to the range tomorrow and swap out my red dot for a scope and see what she does. Again it will only be 25 yards though... If it works out right I should have a pretty clean gun, with pretty tight groups, but lots of FTEs. If that is the case then I plan to start trying to tune the bolt spring. I hope to have a good report for ya tomorrow. |

I hope to have a good report for ya tomorrow. Let us know how it turns out with those Dynapoints, especially after the spring tuning. What's the difference between the White box and the GT Black box Dynapoint? I have to say that I think the Dynapoint GTs are about the best bulk ammo I have found "yet" for the price. I am not sure what the difference is but the WB Winny is dirty, terribly underpowered, and incredibly inconsistant. I was getting too many FTEs to even think of trying to tune the bolt to it... I had literally told myself that I would never shoot Winny again... I was going through so many different kinds of ammo that I ran out of what my local shop had to offer. I found these at a different store and decided to try them after talking to the salesman about past Winny experience... I am surprised at how consistant it is for bulk ammo and I am surprised at how clean it is. Nothing like the WB Winny... After shooting a bit, and liking the groups, I decided that I was ready to try and tune the bolt. I was getting at least 1 FTE per magazine so I thought I would try shaving a few coils off the bolt spring. I cut 6 coils after about 200 rounds and the FTEs fell back to about 1 every 2 magazines. I didn't want to cut any more off without cleaning the gun first. I may knock a couple more coils off next week... Here is some 25 yard shooting from today. There are 25 rounds in the top right target but I started having trouble aiming for a hole. Something I will have to practice later... ![]() |

And I don't see how to contact Winchester directly to ask them about the black box ammo... I don't mind... Its fun trying different ammo... I still plan to try more as I find it... It seems odd that the Black Box Winny isn't on their web site... |

I've found CCI Mini-mags 40 gr to be the most consistent through my ST-22 with LW barrel. not the most accurate, but good enough for what i'm using it for. it's a tack driver with some other match ammo though.

I only got like 150 rounds through my ST-22 so far but it seems to eat CCI standard bulkpacks better than Federal. I got no problems with CCI at all yet but Federal sometimes gives me FTEs, a case gets stuck because it doesn't eject in time, I think it's because the charge is too weak to push the bolt all the way back, I suppose that could be fixed by taking a few coils off the spring but if CCIs run fine I think I'll leave it as is, will probably break in with use and cycle federal without any problems later.
I believe the ammo here is different from what you have in the states though. Our Federal bulkpacks for instance are 500 rounds instead of 550, and the CCI standards come in 500 too, I hear they only come in 100 in the states (that true?). Has anyone tried Aguilas 60gr SSS bullets? They seem interesting for suppressed shooting. |
