This is some of the best advice I ever got. It is not from Larue, but it is still good advice.
In order to achieve the full potential of your upper, we recommend that you follow our personal
regimen, one that has served us well for many years and many uppers. First, use CLP (Breakfree,
Slip2000, FP-10, etc.) liberally on all the moving parts. Specifically, the bolt, gas rings, carrier,
and interior bore of the receiver should be lubricated heavily and often for the first 500-1000
rounds or so. Paying attention, you will know when enough is enough, as things will get
noticeably smoother in operation at some point in that period. Second, pay attention to the bore
periodically for the first several hundred rounds. Always using a bore guide, wet patch the bore
after each shooting session. Look closely for any signs of copper fouling and clean thoroughly if
copper is present. If a session involves a lot of shooting, over 100 rounds or so, patch the bore
while at the range, and dry the bore completely before additional firing.
Once you get through the break in period, you will notice two things. One, the operation of the
rifle will be very smooth. Second, you should find that cleaning is much easier, close to that of a
chrome lined barrel. This is because barrel bores will burnish directionally during break-in and
the pores of the steel will seal off, leaving a very smooth, slick bore surface.
As to cleaning products, we use, and recommend, the full line of KG products. They offer a full
line of non-etchant products for bore care, which have proven themselves in the most difficult of
environments around the world. None are ammonia-based solutions and all can be left safely in
the bore without fear of damage. There are plenty of products out there and we have used most of
them. These are simply the best we have found to date.
Included in your shipment you will find a pen applicator of Gun Butter. Once you have
your upper past the initial break-in, this is the best lube we have found for precision AR’s. Use
very sparingly on the inside of the receiver and on contact surfaces in the BCG, including the bolt
exterior and gas rings. To use it, first COMPLETELY clean all surfaces to bare metal. Shake
well to ensure the lube is mixed correctly. Then apply a small amount of lube to surfaces that rub
together or that become fouled during shooting. This lube is synthetic, stays where you put it, and
will not burn off. Once initially applied, it makes things easier to clean, fouling and carbon won’t
stick, and reapplication requires only a quick wipe to remove fouling deposits, and a sparing
reapplication of lube. Try it with our compliments.
