My family and I do a fair ammount of camping. Well our one year old plano 60 qt latch broke this weekend. After buying a new 50 dollar cooler each year, we are contemplating sucking up the hit and buying a yeti.
We are looking at the 60 qt. Those with experience. .is the juice worth the squeeze? I know mark sells them, so I figured the Laruemenati would be the best to ask. |
|
|
Yes they are worth it. I have 2, keeps ice for up to 11 days and is indestructible.
|
|
Have a roadie and a 65 qt.
If you can afford it, do it. Bad to the bone. Indestructible and keeps ice. |
|
I don't personally have one, but my parents do (they are doing more camping/traveling now that they are retired) and we have used it on hunting trips. It will keep ice well for at least 10-11 days; they have had it keep ice longer than that. Definitely worth it IF you will use it. If all you are going to do is use it 1-2 times per year, then no. If you intend to use it several times or more per month, go for it.

I almost used my Xmas gift card to Larue on one about a week before the lowers popped up.
The only reason I didn't was because a couple reviews said it didn't come with the Larue sticker on top?!? I put it off for later, and that allowed me to get a lower. So the $350 question for the Larue crew is: Does it come with the larue decal? |
|
Largest size on Larue's site is a 50 qt. Do they carry larger sizes?
|
|
We have the LT 50... big enough to fit some drinks/gallon of sweet tea and a bag of ice. Much more if done right.
If you can afford one, do not hesitate. I only recommend you think long and hard about what size you want and then proceed to the next size up. |
|
We have 1 - 65 Qt and 2 - 125 Qt Yetis.
The 65 Qt keeps ice longer than the 125 Qt...I think it is just a volume thing. That said, they both keep ice longer than any bargain cooler (and by bargain I mean ANY other cooler). |
|
I have the yeti 110. When I fill it up, full, about 5-6 days later I have probably 30-40% ice left. That's sitting outside or in my garage.
I bought mine on Craigslist for $350 NIB. The oilfields down here give them away and a lot of their guys sell them. |
|
I've got the 35, 65, and the Hopper 30. They do truly rock. The bigger ones can be truly heavy when totally loaded down.
To keep the ice even colder longer, ice the cooler the day before and let it sit. Then the day of leaving, empty the water, fill with food/beverage, then top off with fresh ice. The premeditated cooling aids in getting the inside cooler to temperature, then that heat is dissipated into the ice, thus converting some ice to water. When the cooler is at it's coldest temp, less heat is there to melt the fresh ice as quick, thus lasting even longer. I've gotten 4+ days of ice cold beverages out of a cooler full of ice sitting outside in 90-100* heat (for 4+ days). I don't know of many other coolers that would last more than a day. Buy once, cry once! |

Yeti has rubber latches that will fail due to ozone. Pelican is what you seek. Cheaper too.

If you get one, get one bigger than you think you need and try and size them up in person first. They are awesome coolers, my next one will be yeti

Pelicans are great for warranty(lifetime) and cost savings.
The Pelican will have a much larger mass per actual capacity size, and they weight a lot more too. The price difference can be close to $100 so you have to weight that. |
|
You all are forgetting that Mark doesn't sell Pelican coolers, and I think the same kinda' rubber is all over and inside our cars.
Seems we're all doing OK against our gaseous friend, for the most part... Just having fun guys, I do love all my Pelican cases. A.W.D. |

I think I'm going to fork out the cash for the Roadie and try it out before I get a bigger one. That tan looks good.

I bought a 65 and absolutely love it, but it doesn't get much use anymore.

Shopping for a Yeti is like shopping for a LaRue. You try to decide what your second Yeti would be before you fully decide on the first one. Do you go Roadie and 65 or 35 and 75...... etc. I've been looking at the sizes online and watching the videos for the last 20 minutes. Then they go and offer colors too which gives you so many more options. Need to head over to Scheel's and put my hands on them. I usually just drool on them for a minute on my way by. I think I did decide if I die to just be buried in the 420 instead of a casket!

Last summer I set off on a 3 month fishing trip across Oregon, Idaho, and Montana with a 75 liter YETI. Always had cold food with good ice. Never had any meat of milk spoil. One of my best purchased decision for the trip. My gear is still packed and I am headed out again this summer. Learn to keep the right amount of ice/water mix on the bottom, don't constantly bleed of the water. A little salt helps the chill, and not all ice is created equal. One town I rolled through had a large ice house which chilled its ice down from hot water which takes out all dissolved air. Shaved/chipped also has a deeper chill.
YMMV |

Thanks for the info guys. I am leaning towards a Pelican 65 at the moment.

Love my LaRue Yetti 50! Best cooler I have ever owned. Heavy. Keeps cold for days!

Probably one of the best coolers made! Holds ice for two days minimum. Definitely worth the money.

Quoted: I agree with the above. I always keep water in the cooler it keeps everything at 32 degrees. I drained the water in this case to see how much ice was left. The good thing about the Yeti is use can use dry ice if I was on a week long hunting/fishing trip I would use that if I didn't mind my stuff being frozen. I'm not sure about the chipped/shaved ice though. It never seems to last as long as cubed ice when I use it. They are definitely worth the $$$. Best Coolers I have ever owned. They are pretty heavy - that's the ONLY downside to them. I have two Yeti Coolers. One stays in my Go-Devil Duck Hunting Boat and "doubles" as a seat while storing drinks and food - it's a Tundra 65. Last Season, the temps stayed in the 30's and 40's and the a Yeti kept ice for 6 weeks stored outside in my Boat! This one is a Tundra 45 and pretty much stays locked in the bed of my Truck with the Yeti Cable Lock: http://i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b544/TXRanchHand1968/image.jpg1_zpsbufr9kmn.jpg You can't see the Mud, Blood, and Guts on the lid. Had it last weekend in Galveston and was cutting bait on it. They are serious tools made to take all the abuse you can throw at them. If you want a Yeti and live near Austin - they sell "Blem" Models for 40-50% off in their Warehouse. They just have some sort of cosmetic blemish and don't carry the Yeti Warranty, but a great deal. For those saying the rubber straps are a negative or weak point - my oldest Yeti is 7 years old and straps are still holding strong. They do sell replacement straps for a whopping $16. If you lose the Cooler Plug, it will run you $9 for a replacement. So while they ARE expensive, they are built like a tank and replacement parts are available and relatively cheap too! View Quote Axe 'em Jacks! Do you live near Nac? I have a tan Tundra 45 that I got at an I can't pass it up deal and I love it. BigDozer66 |

There are other coolers that are equally or better insulated, there are others that are probably just as strong. That said, I have a yeti. I got a yeti 50 for a vacation, and was impressed. Later, got a yeti 30 for a different vacation. Wife wanted a smaller one, so got a rodie, then we wanted a larger one, so she got a 60.
Suspect we will get a 75 as well at some point. So yes, I am a fan boy. -- Understand, a cooler will only cool as well as you pack it. I have put 4" of water in my yeti, then dropped it in a coffin freezer before - filled it with cold beer and ice - and it stayed cold a long time (outside temps were hitting 110 - I think I got 6 days. |

Pelican now has two models that comes with wheels. The 95 has almost the same footprint as the 65, just taller.
Costco had the 65 very cheap for a short period last year. Yeah, they are heavy bitches when full. |

Pelicans are the best value in size for the money and they keep stuff cold better.
If you want a great deal on a great cooler equal to a yeti the go to SAMs club and buy the igloo sportsman 55 for $200......it is equal to a yeti 65 for half the money......I use two of them daily as well as a Pelican 65. |

^^ Coincidentally I saw the Pelican at Costco tonight. Looks like a rugged unit. $239 was the price I believe.
I've got two Yetis though, I'll be keeping those. |

Anyone have issues with their YETI lid warping? We had to send our lid back under warranty, heard some others too? (NOT from Larue)
