Don't call them butter bars, they are pure gold and you should strive for them as such. If it means that little to you why are you trying to get them?
I know that's not what you meant but if you don't treat that responsibility with respect you'll just be another butter bar.

I have never met a butter bar that was pure gold. Wanna be a good 2nd LT...listen to your senior NCO's and stay out of their way.
The biggest liability in the military is a butter bar that thinks he's in charge.
Butter bar is your license to learn. 1st LT means you somewhat have a clue and by CPT you either get it or you don't. By O3 you will know whether or not you are a good leader. Don't worry, your NCO's will let you know whether or not you have a career in the military.
Back to the main question...talk to vets, ask them about their experiences (where they served, what they did, lessons learned). Most are proud of their service and will love to talk about it. For you, listen and learn from these guys and maybe you'll be a good butter bar when the time comes. Then the words I said above will make sense to you. If you're lucky you'll end up with a Warrant Officer in your company and he'll set you straight right of the bat.
