Got a confession to make ...

Good, strong letter.
Out of curiosity, did Motorola ever reply? |

small world indeed. Wasn't there an oak tree in the yard that had two limbs join together to form a circle in the middle of the branch? been about 20 years since I've been there.

View Quote Yep, and while trying to race up it to jar a football loose before my buddy could rock it out, I slipped and slammed my way back to the ground, fracturing my back enough to see it on x-rays - it healed, all the skin came back, and I'm none the worse for wear. |

In 1983-4, the small communication maintenance firm I worked for did cameras and intercom stuff at the Ed Bluestein Motorola campus. They seemed both huge and, sadly, kind of inept. Lots of chip fabrication facilities, lots of highest tech, but their A/C didn't always work in some strange places. I remember one door nobody used because it didn't want to open - maybe the foundation shifted or maybe they just built it wrong. It was an eye opener about big business, especially when I worked for a VERY small company housed in a small building directly across the street from KVET's transmitter tower, off Research Blvd...
So anyway, I can see Motorola not being happy with local machine shops - there weren't a lot of them then. But while I don't know if they went with any outside firm or bought some equipment and set it up themselves (they could have easily done that too), I see a real loss for Motorola there. And of course a real win for the AR community! Funny how things work out, eh? |

That is phenomenal. Great story.
I've been trying to buy machine shops in the oil and gas industry but have been disappointed by the margins. The aerospace industry has much better margins but after taking a look at their customer contracts…talk about getting bent. All that said, seeing your success is inspirational. :) |

When and why did you decide to go into the firearms business for yourself? Had your shop done manufacturing for gun companies before, or was it a whole new thing?

View Quote Well, I was 4'9" the day I got my driver's license ... I grew another foot after that. This small size allowed me to get away with groundhog murder while cruising East Tennessee back roads on a trial's bike. When stopped by law enforcement as to why I had a 7mmMag stuck in a leather scabbard on the forks, with a Bausch & Lomb 2.5x - 8x with tapered crosshairs mounted on it ... I was a kid curiosity, not someone to haul to jail. "Well you be careful with that big rifle son" "Yes sir Officer, and if you need any hay cut and baled, you know who to call" Anyhow, I was smokin' chucks out past 500 with Kentucky windage techniques. Went off to machining school, heard about the Alamo and came to Texas (old intel ) bounced around a few different machining disciplines for a couple years, and in 1980, at 23, decided I was ready and bought my first manual mill. You know the rest of the story. |

I remember the article ... maybe Outdoor Life. It was titled "In the Land of Boone and Crockett" |
