I know this has been posted a few dozen times, but I'm feeling indifferent towards my set up.
16" Predatar came in last week. Got it all set up with an Aimpoint T1 on LT660. Took it to the range yesterday (Sunday) and it was amazing. Shooting it side by side with my 18" Stealth made me happy I got the 16" as a nice alternative. The problem I'm having is, even though it was extremely reliable, light weight, and an all around great shooter with the new match barrel, I just can't shake the feeling that the T1 isn't doing it justice. I shoot .5 MOA or better with my stealth, I think the Tar should be able to do that or better. Would I benefit from switching to a 1-4 or 1-6x scope instead? Something where I can do close work but also more precise at a distance? What's the general consensus on where to go with a Tar? I just feel like I can't decide it's purpose already having my 18" laser gun and all! Any help would be appreciated! |

You know, I had the same exact issue. I wanted to stay simple, fast, and lightweight, but I was also doing a lot of shooting in which magnification would be nice to have. As wonderful as the T-1's are, you can only do so much with them at any distance.
I realize everyone is different, but I have never heard of anyone being crazy about the magnifier. It seems to be a duct tape solution. I had never had any shooting time behind a 1 - ?X optic, so I borrowed one from a friend. What I was most concerned about was losing the speed on 1 power as compared to how fast the T1 was. For this specific rifle, I needed whatever optic was on it to be very versatile in close target situations. Fast acquisition and fast follow up shots were a must. I was willing to trade having a higher magnification for the optic to perform at close quarters. Again, everyone's needs are different, and what works for me might not work for you, or even be important. I also realize that there is a purpose behind QD mounts and changing optics can be easy.....again, not my thing. I like to put something on top that works for what I need and want and leave it there. Anyway, I tried a 1-4 and after reading reviews and listening to friends, was a bit skeptical. I really didn't care how great it was on 4 power, my concern was on 1 power. I was quite surprised at how fast and accurate I was able to shoot with the 1 power at close targets. If I was honest with myself, I know that the 1-4 isnt quite as fast as the T1, but it is really close. Again, really close might be okay, and for others it wont. For me, the very slight difference was fine, especially since i was gaining a 4 power magnification option. I have rifles that I will never shoot past 100 yards more than likely....for those a T1 is perfect. For rifles that I would want to shoot any distance, I am now convinced that a 1 - ?X optic of good quality is the best of both worlds. Notice I said good quality. You wont be able to get the eye relief and quickness you are expecting after a T1 from a cheap optic. So to answer your question, I would seek a high quality 1-6 for your new rifle. I think you will find its the best of both worlds and be extremely happy. If you can find an optic to try out first, that might be the way to go. It really helped me. Good Luck! |

View Quote See, now you are on the same page as me. I love the T-1. It's amazing as it sits, but it's half assed to put a magnifier on it to me, as magnifiers never felt right. But the T1 alone is just not quite fit to the rifle perfectly in my eyes. To me this rifle is an amazing battle rifle. But it's made to shoot precise groups as well. I feel like I'm robbing the gun of something if I only use it to blast away at 25-50 yards. I KNOW the rifle is capable of SO much more. I think I want something that can fill multiple roles With that said, I own a Primary Arms 1-6x Gen 2, which sits on a 14.5" LW DD Barreled custom build. So while it's not super high quality, I'm very accustomed to the 1-x optics. I just haven't personally owned a mid to high quality optic with that type of magnification to do a true comparison of the two. And my precision rigs all have a different assortment of higher or fixed magnifications. So it's hard to say if the 1-4 or 1-6 on the Tar would fit the bill. I might have to sell the T1 and see about getting into a high speed optic of some sort. What's out there in the 1-6x arena that's a true 1x? If, for the sake of argument, I were to sell the T1, I could put a price range on the new optic of maybe... 750-1k. Without selling it I'd like to stick with maybe 600 or less. Any suggestions? |

I could stretch it if necessary. But I was hoping around 1k would leave me with extra for another larue mount for it. ;)

I've been trying to find an optic for my 16" tOBR 7.62 which is still in queue. I don't want a long range scope and surely not a RDS. I decided on a 1-6x. I really want the Trijicon VCOG, but it's pricey. I also want first focal plane. I plan on buying from Larue and taking advantage of their combos. ATM, they are not planning on carrying the VCOG. I inquired through email... With my rifle being in queue for just a couple weeks, I have time to research optics. |

I love ta33's for this reason. Fast up close, but the 3x lets you unlock some of your rifles potential.
If your focused on a scope..check out the burris xtr2 1-5. Larue has a combo for 925. |

I'm currently eyeballing a Norden Performance 1-6 for my latest rifle. Until I actually decide I'm running an Acog. I'll probably have it figured out sometime in the next 6-12 months

Either way I go, the Larue mount is a must. |

I had toyed with keeping it for the Tar, but decided against it as I wanted a little choice in magnification. I'll definitely check out the Burris! |

If you've read my SD thread in GD, you'll see financially we are trying to get back to square one after all the forced moving expenses and what not from the shooting that occured. I only buy what I can afford by selling/trading what I have available to me. No illusions here of splurging on something amazing. |

I bought one for a shooting buddy--very very impressed with the optic. Hard to beat for under 300 bucks. |

Go with a 1-4 or 1-6 like you are looking at and it should make you happy. Having a rifle that shoots accurately and not being able to use it's potential is frustrating. IMO whatever scope you look at make sure it is a true 1X or zero magnification at 1. Most scopes advertised as 1X, especially the lower price point scopes are actually 1.1-1.5 which is not user friendly at close range IF big IF you are planning to shoot it with both eyes open like a red dot at close range. With a true 1X it is easily done, with any magnification it gets more difficult to be fast. ETA: Leupold MK 6 ideally View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

And since I'm no longer AD, I don't qualify for their discount. My list right now is sitting with the Vortex Viper PST on top, then a SWFA 1-6x, and at the way end some of the Burris line. But those don't interest me quite as much. I do qualify for the Vortex discount still, so it's really hard to pass up the deal on one of their 1-4x's. |

Decided to let the T1 go if anyone is interested. It's posted in the used optics section.
If it sells quickly I'll probably order the Vortex 1-4x today. |

Vortex Viper PST, best bang for your buck. It easily gives me under 1moa out to 200 yards. I love the reticule on it also...
