Should I drop out of the contest this month, or just ride it out and see what happens?
lists the rules. It specifically addresses duplicates.
Basically, the only thing a dupe does is lower the chances of winning for ALL the people that chose that number. It doesn't disqualify you or the person(s) you duped.
You brought up etiquette. I would like to think that there is some sort of etiquette to all this, but frankly, there are A LOT of people here that just post a number regardless of others' numbers, post in unrelated threads, and some are just dicks. I think any effort you spend on etiquette is probably wasted effort. I think just throw a number in, and hope for the best.
Personally, I'd like to see the rules change to what I think that they used to be, which is that dupe numbers are DQ, and the original poster of the number is the only valid pick.
