I was gifted a 20" Compass Lake barrel to start building my sons first rifle.
Will that be possible with this barrel? It has notches for the rifle length gas block. Will those interfere on a carbine length setup?
Lastly, will this be an economical option? Would I be better off finding a different barrel? It is a 1/8 twist, with 2500 rounds through it.
Anyway, here is what it looks like:

Cut it down to 16.5" ala "Dissipator" and have it threaded and recrowned.
Or cut it down to 18" ,thread and crown. or leave as is and shoot |

If you change the gas system length and reprofile the whole barrel, the longest barrel you can get is roughly 13" - cut just behind the rifle gas port.

Contour is either $78 for infront of the hand guard or $120 for the whole length of the barrel. They'll go ahead and put a plug in the existing gas port if you want to go shorter. Plenty of meat left on that bone! |

Simply cutting to 16" with rifle length gas is not recommended, for reliability reasons. It could be turned into a true Dissy, with a mid or car gas, but will get a bit pricey. (Thread/Cut = $65, Contour FWD GB = $65, Relocate gas port = $35, and Gas Block = $47 w/tube). And, if you do not already have an FSB, you will need an FSB (somewhere around $120 to $185 depending on model you want, and if you want the gas block pinned, that's another $45).
Now, my recommended option is to put it on the EE for trade on a good, used 16" or 14.5" barrel you can use. That barrel would make a sweet SPR barrel. :-) |

I would probably cut it to 18" and thread and crown it and then get it contoured to government or medium profile. But that's just me.

17 or 18" rifle gas would be the way to go IMO but pricey. Trading on the EE is probably more better cost wise.

How much would it cost to turn this thing into an SPR barrel? Also, would those notches be filled? Would they be visible? I know the rear one would be covered by the gas block, but would an Ops Inc collar cover the front notch? I see a somewhat MK12 Mod 1 setup in this barrels future. I do not know anything about Compass Lake barrels, but I am guessing that it still has a bunch of life left in it, with only 2500 rounds fired so far. Is that a fair guess? That sounds good too, SPR from the gasblock forward, with a lighter profile than what the barrel has right now at the rear would lighten it up a bit. I know that I could sell it or trade it, but it was gifted for a reason, and I just want to make this barrel work. |

To turn it into an SPR barrel (Mk12) pretty much just need Thread/Cut ($65). If you make it an MK Mod 0, it will need the flats for the PRI GB/sight. For a Mod 1, i would just cheat a bit and use a longer GB to cover the front flat.
If you want it lightened up, another $65 for under the HG contour. |

What profile would you recommend for under the HG?
Would a longer gas block like the LaRue cover the flats, and still allow for the mounting of an Ops Inc collar? |

I would probably do around .700" under the HG, and yes, the LaRue GB should work just dandy, and the OPS 12th collar should butt right against it (if cut to 18").
